INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to present our experience with the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for parapharyngeal space tumours.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: This study is a retrospective review of 90 patients diagnosed with tumours of the parapharyngeal space and treated surgically between 1984 and 2015. Patients whose tumours were not primary but invaded the parapharyngeal space expanding from another region, tumours originating in the deep lobe of the parotid gland and head and neck metastasis were excluded from this study.
RESULTS: 74% percent of the parapharyngea

Salivary gland tumours constitute approximately 1-5% of all human neoplasms. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the commonest benign neoplasm affecting the parotid gland most often (> 75%), followed by the submandibular gland (13%), then the palate (9%). Metastasising pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) is extremely rare. The effects can be severe and a reported 40% of MPA patients die with disease. This case represents the first known case in English literature of an untreated minor salivary gland PSA of the palate metastasising to an ipsilateral cervical node. We report a 61 year old female who presented wit

The objectives of this paper are to report a case of apocrine carcinoma and the discussion of aspects related to its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Carcinomas with apocrine differentiation not related to extramammary Paget's disease, ductal breast carcinoma, Moll's glands adenocarcinoma and ceruminous glands carcinoma are very uncommon tumors. We report a case of a 51-year-old black woman who developed apocrine carcinoma lesions in the head and neck region. Two lesions involved her left parotid gland (first tumor and local recurrence), and other involved her submandibular skin. The micro

Solitary fibrous tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are rarely encountered in clinical practice. These are unusual mesenchymal tumours initially described as primary spindle-cell neoplasms. Such tumours may manifest in pleural and extrapleural sites such as the liver, parapharyngeal space, sublingual and parotid glands, and thyroid but are seldom described in the nose and paranasal sinus region. Erosion of adjacent structures may occur, but the tumour itself does not metastasise. A young patient presented with a progressive unilateral nasal mass. The initial nasal biopsy reported

Schwannoma-like pleomorphic adenoma is a rare variant of the common benign salivary neoplasm, pleomorphic adenoma. This entity's cytomorphology closely mimics a schwannoma, potentially making a diagnosis of cytologic preparations or of surgical specimens a challenge. To the best of our knowledge, there are only six previous reports of schwannoma-like pleomorphic adenoma with eight total cases in the English language literature prior to the addition of the two cases detailed in this report. Our report includes what we believe to be the first documented case of this entity occurring in the subma

Myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon tumor of the salivary glands, most commonly the parotid gland. Clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare variant with an aggressive behavior. Here, we describe a case of clear cell myoepithelial carcinoma arising from the hard palate in an elderly male who underwent resection of the tumor and postop radiation. Posttreatment imaging demonstrated bilateral pulmonary nodules and a C2 body lesion concerning for metastasis. Biopsy of the lung lesions revealed a monomorphous population of optically clear cells with hyperchromatic and pleomorphic nuclei which

Desmoplasia is the formation of a dense collagenous stroma around a neoplasm. It occurs in a variety of malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). While desmoplasia is uncommonly seen in cutaneous SCC, it is an independent risk factor for recurrence and metastasis. We report a case series of desmoplastic SCC in the periorbital region. Seven cases were identified: the median age was 68, four were men. The mean follow-up was 48 months. Two patients (29%) had aggressive local recurrence: one required salvage surgery including orbital exenteration, parotidectomy, and neck dissection to

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the salivary gland. The oncocytic variant of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (OMEC) is rare and a small subset shows exclusive oncocytic morphology. Here we report an OMEC case of the parotid gland in a 74-year-old woman with exclusive oncocytes and rare mucocytes. The oncocytes showed diffuse nuclear positivity with p63 immunostaining. The MAML2 translocation was present, supporting the diagnosis of OMEC. Distinguishing OMEC with exclusive oncocytes from oncocytoma and oncocytic carcinoma can be very challenging for pathologists and is c

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare benign neoplasm presenting predominantly in the parotid gland or in periparotid lymph nodes. It rarely transforms into a malignant tumor. We present a sebaceous lymphadenoma with an unusual clinical presentation with a malignant component, infiltration of lymph nodes, and lymphangiosis carcinomatosa. Sebaceous lymphadenoma usually presents as a well-circumscribed, painless, infraauricular mass. In our 87-years-old male patient, the clinical presentation was confluent reddish livid plaques at the left cheek and the left neck. In addition, cervical lymph node met

Warthin tumour is the second most common benign neoplasm of the parotid gland. It has a low rate of growth and exhibits malignant transformation in 0.3% of cases. Although its aggressiveness has not been a concern, surgical resection remains the most common treatment modality. This entails the risk of a general anaesthetic and those pertaining to the procedure itself, most notably permanent facial nerve damage. This has led some authors to use conservative management, albeit rarely. There are those who condemn such a policy despite the encouraging results reported thus far. To understand the r

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: A case of metastasis to the pituitary gland from a ductal adenocarcinoma of the salivary gland is presented. Metastasis to this site is rare, and a salivary gland source has never previously been described.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: This patient presented with hypopituitarism, including diabetes insipidus.
INTERVENTION: A craniotomy was performed to alleviate visual loss. The histological features of the sellar tumor were identical to those of a tumor removed from the parotid gland 18 months earlier.
CONCLUSION: Although intrasellar tumors originating from embryonic r

The clinical, light, and ultrastructure features of a myoepithelioma occurring on the hard palate of a 24-year-old woman are presented and compared with 41 myoepithelioma of the head and neck described in the English literature. These 42 tumors (39 benign and 3 malignant) occurred in individuals from 14 to 81 years of age, affected both sexes about equally, and most often presented as a slowly enlarging, asymptomatic mass. The parotid gland and palate were the most common sites of occurrence. The tumors are typically circumscribed and encapsulated, vary from 1 to 5 cm in the greatest dimension

INTRODUCTION: The past two decades have seen the introduction of several new variants of established salivary gland tumors, along with occasional, entirely novel entities. Palisading adenocarcinoma was described in 2023 with a handful of subsequent additional case reports. We encountered several seemingly inherited cases of palisading adenocarcinoma in a familial cohort.
METHODS: Within the affected family, all available archival surgical pathology and cytopathology material was retrieved and reviewed. Clinical history was obtained through chart review. Whole-exome sequencing was performed on

BACKGROUND: The new human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) has been detected in all types of Kaposi's sarcomas, as well as in body-cavity lymphomas and Castleman's disease, furthermore molecular biologic studies have identified a number of potential viral oncogenes. There is evidence for sexual transmission of HHV-8 in HIV-seropositive patients, but the route of infection among the HIV-seronegative population is uncertain. Findings of HHV-8 DNA in saliva in some cases are suggestive of nonsexual transmission associated with latent infection of the salivary gland (as it is known for EBV, CMV, HHV-6 a

Deep lobe parotid tumours are difficult to remove due to their location and proximity to the facial nerve. Total parotidectomy is standard but has high complication rates. Selective deep lobe parotidectomy preserves the superficial lobe and may reduce morbidity. This study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of selective deep lobe parotidectomy outcomes. A PRISMA-based systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. Databases searched on 23 August 2025 included MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PubMed, Google Scholar, and CENTRAL. Eligible studies reported outcomes of selective deep lob

Robotic surgery is known as the "third technological revolution" in the field of surgery, and is an important milestone in the development of modern surgery. However, our country's innovative surgical robot industry is still in its early stages, and it is only being utilized in certain surgical fields. To explore the effectiveness of the application of domestic surgical robot in oral and maxillofacial surgery, the author successfully completed a case of benign parotid tumor resection with the assistance of a domestic autonomous robot. The operation was successful, facial nerve function was pre

Parotid tumors are among the most prevalent tumors in otolaryngology, and malignant parotid tumors are one of the main causes of facial paralysis in patients. Currently, the main diagnostic modality for parotid tumors is computed tomography, which relies mainly on the subjective judgment of clinicians and leads to practical problems such as high workloads. Therefore, to assist physicians in solving the preoperative classification problem, a stacked generalization model is proposed for the automated classification of parotid tumor images. A ResNet50 pretrained model is used for feature extracti
