Short-term effects of fine particulate matter and ozone on the cardiac conduction system in patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution-induced changes in cardiac electrophysiological properties could be a pathway linking air pollution and cardiovascular events. The evidence of air pollution effects on the cardiac conduction system is incomplete yet. We investigated short-term effects of particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) on cardiac electrical impulse propagation and repolarization as recorded in surface electrocardiograms (ECG). METHODS: We analyzed repeated 12-lead ECG measurements performed on 5,332 patients between 2001 and 2012. The participants came from …

Purification characteristics of fine particulate matter treated by a self-flushing wet electrostatic precipitator equipped with a flexible electrode.

UNLABELLED: A self-flushing wet electrostatic precipitator was developed to investigate the removal performance for fine particles. Flexible … point, from which it then declined gradually with further increases in the inlet concentration. The particulate matter after the wet electrostatic precipitator showed different degrees of agglomeration. The collection efficiency of trace elements within PM10 was less than that of the PM10 itself. Notably, the water consumption in the current setup was significantly …

Childhood autism spectrum disorders and exposure to nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter air pollution: A review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Genetic and environmental factors have been recognized to play an important role in autism. The possibility that exposure to outdoor air pollution increases the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been an emerging area of research. Herein, we present a systematic review, and meta-analysis of published epidemiological studies that have investigated these associations. METHODS: We undertook a comprehensive search strategy to identify studies that investigated outdoor air pollution and autism in children. Overall, seven cohorts and five case-control studies met o

Sources and Processes Affecting Fine Particulate Matter Pollution over North China: An Adjoint Analysis of the Beijing APEC Period.

The stringent emission controls during the APEC 2014 (the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit; November 5-11, 2014) offer a unique opportunity to quantify factors affecting fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution over North China. Here we apply a four-dimensional variational data assimilation system using the adjoint model of GEOS-Chem to address this issue. Hourly surface measurements of PM2.5 and SO2 for October 15-November 14, 2014 are assimilated into the model to optimize daily aerosol primary and precursor emissions over North China. Measured PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing averag…

Biomarkers of World Trade Center Particulate Matter Exposure: Physiology of Distal Airway and Blood Biomarkers that Predict FEV₁ Decline.

Biomarkers can be important predictors of disease severity and progression. The intense exposure to particulates and other toxins from the destruction of the World Trade Center (WTC) overwhelmed the lung's normal protective barriers. The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) cohort not only had baseline pre-exposure lung function measures but also had serum samples banked soon after their WTC exposure. This well-phenotyped group of highly exposed first responders is an ideal cohort for biomarker discovery and eventual validation. Disease progression was heterogeneous in this group in that some in

Contributions of regional air pollutant emissions to ozone and fine particulate matter-related mortalities in eastern U.S. urban areas.

Ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are associated with adverse human health effects such as lung structure dysfunction, inflammation and infection, asthma, and premature deaths. This study estimated contributions of emissions of anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sulfur dioxides (SO2) from four regions to summertime (i.e., June, July, and August) ozone and PM2.5-related mortalities in seven major Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs with more than 4 million people) in the eastern United States (U.S.). A photochemical transport model, …

The airway epithelium nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat protein 3 inflammasome is activated by urban particulate matter.

BACKGROUND: The airway epithelium is the first line of defense against inhaled insults and therefore must be capable of coordinating appropriate inflammatory and immune responses. OBJECTIVE: We sought to test the hypothesis that the nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, an intracellular danger-sensing complex, plays a critical role in airway epithelium-mediated immune responses to urban particulate matter (PM) exposure. METHODS: In this study we (1) identified NLRP3 and caspase-1 expression in human airway epithelium bronchus and primary cells, (2)…

Application of land use regression to estimate long-term concentrations of traffic-related nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter.

Land use regression (LUR) is a promising technique for predicting ambient air pollutant concentrations at high spatial resolution. We expand on previous work by modeling oxides of nitrogen and fine particulate matter in Vancouver, Canada, using two measures of traffic. Systematic review of historical data identified optimal sampling periods for NO and N02. Integrated 14-day mean concentrations were measured with passive samplers at 116 sites in the spring and fall of 2003. Study estimates for annual mean NO and NO2 ranged from 5.4-98.7 and 4.8-28.0 ppb, respectively. Regulatory measurements ra…

Lung toxicity of ambient particulate matter from southeastern U.S. sites with different contributing sources: relationships between composition and effects.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution and, more specifically, particulate matter (PM) is associated with adverse health effects. However, the specific PM characteristics responsible for biological effects have not been defined. OBJECTIVES: In this project we examined the composition, sources, and relative toxicity of samples of PM with aerodynamic diameter </= 2.5 microm (PM2.5) collected from sites within the Southeastern Aerosol Research and Characterization (SEARCH) air monitoring network during two seasons. These sites represent four areas with differing sources of PM2.5, including local …

Trace gases and particulate matter emissions from wildfires and agricultural burning in Northeastern Mexico during the 2000 fire season.

An inventory of air pollutants emitted from forest and agricultural fires in Northeastern Mexico for the period of January to August of 2000 is presented. The emissions estimates were calculated using an emissions factor methodology. The inventory accounts for the emission of carbon monoxide (CO), methane, nonmethane hydrocarbons, ammonia, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter (PM). Particulate matter emissions include estimates for fine PM and coarse PM. A total of 2479 wildfires were identified in the domain for the period of interest, which represented approximately 810,000 acres burned a…

Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter and primary cardiac arrest among persons with and without clinically recognized heart disease.

The authors studied the association between incidence of primary cardiac arrest and daily measures of fine particulate matter (</=2.5 micro m) using a case-crossover study of 1,206 Washington State out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (1985-1994) among persons with (n = 774) and without (n = 432) clinically recognized heart disease. The authors compared particulate matter levels on the day of the cardiac event and the 2 days preceding the event with levels from matched reference days. The estimated relative risk for a 13.8- micro g/m(3) increase in fine particulate matter (nephelometry: 0.54 x 10(-…

Interactive dynamics of particulate and dissolved organic matter under sustained hypoxia conditions in a semi-enclosed bay (Jinhae Bay).

We investigated the isotopic variation of particulate and dissolved organic matter (OM; δ13CPOC, δ15NPN, δ13CDOC) associated with the frequent occurrence of hypoxia in a semi-enclosed bay (Jinhae Bay, South Korea). During the hypoxic period (August-October 2024), surface-water physical properties (temperature: 25.8 ± 3.0 °C; salinity: 30.5 ± 1.9 psu; dissolved oxygen: 7.0 ± 2.0 mg/L) coincided with significantly elevated concentrations of particulate and dissolved organic components (POC: 0.5 ± 0.2 mg/L; PN: <0.1 mg/L; DOC: 1.3 ± 0.3 mg/L; DTN: 0.3 ± 0.1 mg/L) throughout the water column. An A549 Cell-Based Approach Using Repeated Fluorescence Readouts for Assessing Reactive Oxygen Species Activity of Atmospheric Particulate Matter.

Exposure to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a major public-health concern, in part because PM can perturb cellular redox homeostasis. This study evaluates an in vitro A549/DCFH-DA approach using repeated fluorescence readouts to assess PM2.5-induced oxidative activity. Untreated and assay-specific controls were combined with zymosan and NIST Standard Reference Material® 2584 suspended in PBS, and fluorescence was monitored at multiple readout times over a 15 min-6 h window. Method performance was characterized using the coefficient of variation (CV) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A de…

Bayesian Analysis of Postoperative Complication Risk Associated With Preoperative Exposure to Fine Particulate Matter: A Single-Center Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution, especially particle pollution, is increasingly recognized as a potential perioperative risk factor, yet modeling environmental exposures in surgical cohorts remains methodologically underdeveloped. We demonstrate a Bayesian hierarchical framework to quantify probabilistic associations between preoperative fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and postoperative complications, highlighting its interpretability and flexibility for clinical environmental epidemiology. METHODS: We conducted a single center, retrospective cohort study using data from 49,615 surgical pa…

Effect-based spatiotemporal assessment of suspended particulate matter in the River Rhine: An early warning platform for environmental monitoring.

Effective early warning systems for aquatic contamination require monitoring strategies capable of detecting subtle, long-term shifts in mixture-driven biological activity. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) serves as a carrier and reservoir for complex contaminant mixtures, facilitating their transport and persistence in aquatic systems, yet systematic toxicological time series for archived SPM remain scarce. Regulatory monitoring predominantly targets Priority Substances and River Basin Specific Pollutants, leaving the temporal trends of particle-associated mixture toxicity largely unresolve…

Dysfunctional TRIM31 of POMC Neurons Provokes Hypothalamic Injury and Peripheral Metabolic Disorder under Long-Term Fine Particulate Matter Exposure.

Particulate matter ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5) elevates risks of neurological and chronic metabolic diseases, but the underlying mechanisms linking PM2.5-induced central nervous system (CNS) injury to metabolic dysfunction remain unclear. Hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin-expressing (POMC+) neurons regulate systemic metabolic homeostasis, and tripartite motif-containing protein 31 (TRIM31) modulates inflammation and metabolism. Here, we investigated whether TRIM31 in POMC+ neurons mediates PM2.5-induced hypothalamic injury and peripheral metabolic disorders in mice subjected to 24-week PM2.5 exposure. TRI…

Long-Term Exposure to Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) Components and Precocious Puberty Among School-Aged Children: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of precocious puberty is a major health challenge for Chinese children, while related risk factors remain less well explored. Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a leading environmental hazard in China. Although certain components of PM2.5 have been reported to be endocrine disruptors for sex hormones, population-based evidence is still lacking on the association between PM2.5 exposure and precocious puberty in China. OBJECTIVE: Based on a cross-sectional survey covering 30 cities in 2017 to 2019, this study was designed to explore the a…
