A case is reported of an 18-year-old male patient who had a road traffic accident, with head and chest injuries. The patient was admitted to the surgical intensive care unit 24 h later because of an alteration of his level of consciousness. He required artificial ventilation. Five days later, he developed right-sided lower lobe pneumonia, treated with positive end-expiratory pressure. A Gram negative organism was found on bronchial brushing, but not in haemocultures. It was identified as Pasteurella multocida, sensitive to beta-lactamines, but not to amikacin. Cefotaxime, which had been starte…

House flies are important nuisance pests in a variety of confined livestock operations. More importantly, house flies are known mechanical vectors of numerous animal and human pathogens. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an economically important, complex illness of cattle associated with several bacteria and viruses. The role of flies in the ecology and transmission of bacterial pathogens associated with BRD is not understood. Using culture-dependent and culture-independent methods, we examined the prevalence of the BRD bacterial complex Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and His…

The population under study included young calves with pneumonia (group A, n = 13) and their controls (group B, n = 9), as well as older calves from which the lungs with (group C, n = 90) or without (group D, n = 10) lesions were collected after slaughter. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was the organism most commonly isolated from calves in group A (46%), followed by Haemophilus somnus (23%), Mannheimia haemolytica (15%), Streptococcus suis and Pasteurella multocida (7.7% each). Only S. suis (22%) and P. multocida (11%) were found in group B. P. multocida was isolated from 32% group C calves, H. somn…

Unvaccinated laying breeder hens and semen-producing toms were susceptible to the CU strain of Pasteurella multocida and highly susceptible to a virulent strain of P. multocida. Laying breeders vaccinated with CU strain when environmental temperatures were low ceased egg production during the first week after vaccination and had 29% mortality, whereas those vaccinated when temperatures were moderate had only a 25% decrease in egg production and 17% mortality. Comparable nonlaying breeders vaccinated during moderate temperatures did not die. Although few semen-producing toms died postvaccinatio…

A 5-year-old, male neutered domestic shorthair cat was referred for investigation of lethargy, weight loss, pyrexia and upper respiratory tract signs. On computed tomography, an expansile, osteodestructive lesion in the right tympanic bulla was identified. A soft tissue mass extended from the bulla into the nasopharynx, cranium and subcutaneous tissues. The nasopharyngeal mass ruptured during handling, liberating purulent material from which Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture. The lesion was most likely an atypical, abscessated nasopharyngeal polyp. The cat was treated with bul…

Bovine respiratory diseases are a seasonally highly prevalent infectious condition and cause great economic losses to the farming industry. In order to expand the genomic database information of bovine respiratory disease pathogens, the raw data were assembled and genome annotated using relevant bioinformatics analysis software to clarify the strain virulence, resistance gene carriage, and evolution of bovine-origin Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, and Mycoplasma bovis. Whole genome sequencing of Pasteurella multocida (Pm1), Mannheimia haemolytica (Mh1), and Mycoplasma bovis (Mb1…

Evidence that infectious diseases cause wildlife population extirpation or extinction remains anecdotal and it is unclear whether the impacts of a pathogen at the individual level can scale up to population level so drastically. Here, we quantify the response of a Common eider colony to emerging epidemics of avian cholera, one of the most important infectious diseases affecting wild waterfowl. We show that avian cholera has the potential to drive colony extinction, even over a very short period. Extinction depends on disease severity (the impact of the disease on adult female survival) and dis

This retrospective study evaluates the effectiveness of nonsurgical treatment using antibiotics to treat hematogenous septic arthritis in five dogs. Giant-breed dogs were over-represented, with all dogs <1 year of age. Synovial fluid cultures were positive in all cases, with common bacterial species isolated that included Streptococcus B-haemolytic spp., Pasteurella multocida, and Staphylococcus intermedius. Dogs treated with appropriate duration and selection of antibiotics had clinical resolution with no residual deficits. This report and a previous clinical report demonstrate that hematogen…

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida continues to pose a danger to prone farm and wild animals all over the world. Chemotherapeutic treatments are progressively losing their effectiveness, last for long time, and cost a lot of money, as well as being toxic to human consumers. Therefore, clearing the way for immunization as a big-wheel alternative against the economic grain. Yet, the vaccines available in the market do not confer the necessary protection against the pathogen. The integration of the well adjuvanted killed vaccine with the attenuated vaccines proved to offer an effective protection …

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Fowl cholera, caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pasteurella multocida type A, poses a significant threat to chicken production globally. This study investigates the potential of ethanolic extracts from Wild Egyptian Artichoke (WEA) (Cynara cardunculus L. var. sylvestris) to modulate virulence-associated genes and provide an alternative control strategy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 160 tissue samples from diseased chickens were collected and analyzed. Phenotypic, biochemical (via Vitek 2 Compact), and molecular methods were used to identify P. multocida. Polymerase …

Pasteurellosis was diagnosed in a red-fronted conure (Aratinga wagleri) that had been bitten on its breast by a cat 2 weeks before death. The wound spread rapidly, involving the skin over the entire breast and the underlying musculature. Septicemia that followed dermatitis and myositis was the cause of death. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from the heart blood and liver. Diagnosis of Escherichia coli septicemia and enteritis in a hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) was based on lesions such as generalized hyperemia and hemorrhages in visceral organs, fibrinonecrotic…

Pasteurella multocida infections in humans can present as localized infections of soft tissues surrounding the lesions, as respiratory tract infections or as systemic infections with slow or fulminant development. Over 90% of human infections are cases of wound infections or abscesses related to a bite, scratch, or licking of skin lesions by a cat or dog. Severe systemic diseases such as pneumonia, lung abscess, peritonitis, endocarditis, meningitis and sepsis are also well known, especially in patients with underlying medical conditions. In this paper we report on an immunocompromised patient…
