The concept of agnosia as a higher order functional impairment, which can occur in the absence of low level visual perceptual deficits, continues to provoke debate. This controversy is complicated by the fact that, on close examination, agnosic patients do tend to have some perceptual difficulties. Thus the issue centres around the question as to whether these deficits play a causal part in the aetiology of agnosia or whether they are functionally independent, with both impairments resulting from the substantial cerebral lesions involved in agnosia. In 1956, Ettlinger published a study in whic

Sixteen normal subjects and three patients with optic neuritis were studied to determine the effect of decreased retinal illumination on simultaneously recorded pattern electroretinograms (PERG) and visual-evoked potentials (VEP). Using neutral-density filters (NDF), it was found that linear modeling is an excellent fit for VEP/PERG amplitudes and latencies as log functions of retinal illumination, both for individual eyes and averages of pooled data. Within narrow statistical limits, regression slopes show that mean PERG B-wave and VEP P100 latencies are affected almost identically by decreas

The pattern electroretinogram (PERG), thought to be generated in retinal ganglion cells, is a recent addition to the neurophysiologic assessment of retinal function. Factors that affect the PERG include type of pattern-reversal stimulus, spatial frequency of the pattern, luminance and contrast of the pattern, method of waveform processing, type of electrode employed, electrode montage, background illumination, position of stimulus on the retina, temporal frequency of pattern reversal, refractive error, and patient age. Clinical entities reported to affect the PERG include glaucoma and ocular h

Normative data were obtained in 52 volunteers to both transient and steady-state checkerboard pattern reversal. Two sizes of checks subtending 15' and 31' of visual angle were used. The simultaneous recording of pattern ERGs (P-ERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) permitted the determination of the retinocortical time. That is, the transit time expressed in milliseconds between the activation of retinal structures and the arrival of the signal in the visual cortex. Three groups of patients with maculopathies, optic atrophy, and suspected optic nerve demyelination were also studied. Early

The contribution of the anterior fusiform gyrus (AntFG) in human face identity recognition (FIR) has been largely neglected, mainly due to a large signal dropout in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) affecting this region. Here, we report two cases in which direct electrical stimulation of the right face-selective AntFG induced transient FIR impairment. Upon stimulation in this region, patients were unable to select a photograph of a famous face among 3 exemplars, reporting that all the faces looked the same. Most interestingly, they also failed at matching concurrently presented pic

In most healthy adult humans, the right ventro-occipital temporal cortex (vOTC) is more involved in face perception than its left-hemisphere counterpart. Several hypotheses link this right-lateralization for face processing to left-lateralization of language and visual word form processing. In its strongest form, this account assumes an encroachment by word form processing into left vOTC territory that would otherwise be dedicated to face processing, causing face processing that would otherwise be bilateral to rely relatively more on right vOTC. By this logic, if visual word recognition came t

The rapid recognition and memory of faces and scenes implies the engagement of category-specific computational hubs in the ventral visual stream with the distributed cortical memory network. To better understand how recognition and identification occur in humans, we performed direct intracranial recordings, in a large cohort of patients (n = 50), from the medial parietal cortex (MPC) and the medial temporal lobe (MTL), structures known to be engaged during face and scene identification. We discovered that the MPC is topologically tuned to face and scene recognition, with clusters in MPC perfor

Semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) typically presents with left-hemisphere predominant rostral temporal lobe (rTL) atrophy and the most significant complaints within the language domain. Less frequently, patients present with right-hemisphere predominant temporal atrophy coupled with marked impairments in processing of famous faces and emotions. Few studies have objectively compared these patient groups in both domains and therefore it is unclear to what extent the syndromes overlap. Clinically diagnosed svPPA patients were characterized as left- (n = 21) or right-predominant

Recent studies have suggested the importance of statistical image features in both natural scene and object recognition, while the spatial layout or shape information is still important. In the present study, to investigate the roles of low- and high-level statistical image features in natural scene and object recognition, we conducted categorization tasks using a wide variety of natural scene and object images, along with two types of synthesized images: Portilla-Simoncelli (PS) synthesized images, which preserve low-level statistical features, and style-synthesized (SS) images, which retain

Prediction plays a crucial role in perception, as prominently suggested by predictive coding theories. However, the exact form and mechanism of predictive modulations of sensory processing remain unclear, with some studies reporting a downregulation of the sensory response for predictable input whereas others observed an enhanced response. In a similar vein, downregulation of the sensory response for predictable input has been linked to either sharpening or dampening of the sensory representation, which are opposite in nature. In the present study, we set out to investigate the neural conseque

PURPOSE: The visual evoked potential (VEP) provides a time series signal response to an external visual stimulus at the location of the visual cortex. The major VEP signal components, peak latency and amplitude, may be affected by disease processes. Additionally, the VEP contains fine detailed and non-periodic structure, of presently unclear relevance to normal function, which may be quantified using the fractal dimension. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic investigation of the key parameters in the measurement of the fractal dimension of VEPs, to develop an optimal analysis

Here we examined the level of the lateral occipital (LO) area within the processing stream of the ventral visual cortex. An important determinant of an area's level of processing is whether it codes visual elements on both sides of the visual field, as do higher visual areas, or prefers those in the contralateral visual field, as do early visual areas. The former would suggest that LO, on one side, combines bilateral visual elements into a whole, while the latter suggests that it codes only the parts of forms. We showed that LO has a relative preference for visual objects in the contralateral

Visual agnosia has been well studied by anatomical, neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies. However, functional changes in the brain have been rarely assessed by electrophysiological methods. We carried out electrophysiological examinations on a 23-year-old man with associative visual agnosia, prosopagnosia and cerebral achromatopsia to evaluate the higher brain dysfunctions of visual recognition. Electrophysiological methods consisted of achromatic, chromatic and category-specific visual evoked potentials (CS-VEPs), and event-related potentials (ERPs) with color and motion discrimination

Flash and pattern visual evoked potentials were recorded in 8 patients (13 eyes) with dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON), diagnosed using the American Thyroid Association classification. All were treated with systemic steroids, but 4 patients (6 eyes) also required orbital decompression. Flash VEP (P2) and pattern VEP (P100) were recorded prior to and 2 weeks after commencing steroid treatment or decompression. Fifteen patients with Graves orbitopathy but without DON, and 20 healthy subjects, acted as controls. Before treatment visual acuity was reduced in 10 eyes and visual fields were abnorma

To investigate the functions of the amygdala in visual information processing and in emotional and social responses, recordings were made from single neurons in the amygdala of the monkey. A population of neurons (40 of more than 1000 recorded in 4 monkeys) was investigated which responded primarily to faces. These neurons typically (1) responded to some human or monkey faces, which were presented to the monkey through a large aperture shutter so that response latencies could be measured, or were simply shown to the monkey, (2) responded to 2-dimensional representations of these faces, as well

Power spectral analysis (PSA) was performed on the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to counterphased checkerboard stimuli from 98 eyes in 49 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 54 eyes of 27 normal volunteers. Attenuation of high frequency components of the transient visual evoked potential was found in 53% of MS patients and 4% of controls. Loss of high frequency components was poorly correlated with prolonged latency (r = 0.346). The consideration of both PSA and latency of the VEP increased the percentage of MS patients exhibiting visual pathway conduction abnormalities from 61% to 86%

Emotions exert powerful effects on perception and memory, notably by modulating activity in sensory cortices so as to capture attention. Here, we examine whether emotional significance acquired by a visual stimulus can also change its cortical representation by linking neuronal populations coding for different memorized versions of the same stimulus, a mechanism that would facilitate recognition across different appearances. Using fMRI, we show that after pairing a given face with threat through conditioning, viewing this face activates the representation of another viewpoint of the same perso

Developmental studies have demonstrated that cognitive processes such as attention, suppression of interference and memory develop throughout childhood and adolescence. However, little is currently known about the development of top-down control mechanisms and their influence on cognitive performance. In the present study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate modulation of activity in the ventral visual cortex in healthy 7-11-year-old children and young adults. The participants performed tasks that required attention to either face (Fs task) or scene (Sf task) images wh
