Incentive-related modulation of cognitive control in healthy, anxious, and depressed adolescents: development and psychopathology related differences.

BACKGROUND: Developmental changes in cognitive and affective processes contribute to adolescent risk-taking behavior, emotional intensification, and psychopathology. The current study examined adolescent development of cognitive control processes and their modulation by incentive, in health and psychopathology. Predictions include 1) better cognitive control in adults than adolescents, and in healthy adolescents than anxious and depressed adolescents, and 2) a stronger influence of incentives in adolescents than adults, and in healthy adolescents than their depressed and anxious counterparts.

Approach and avoidance patterns in reward learning across domains: An initial examination of the Social Iowa Gambling Task.

The current study examines learning patterns in response to both monetary and social incentives through both approach and avoidance behaviors using modified versions of the Iowa Gambling Task. Specifically, we investigated learning in response to both positive and negative feedback in a sample of 191 undergraduate students. The social task was a novel paradigm, and social feedback were images of faces displaying positive and negative emotions. We examined internal validity of the tasks through modeling changes in approach and avoidance. We also explored associations between approach and avoida

On-line anxiety level detection from biosignals: Machine learning based on a randomized controlled trial with spider-fearful individuals.

We present performance results concerning the validation for anxiety level detection based on trained mathematical models using supervised machine learning techniques. The model training is based on biosignals acquired in a randomized controlled trial. Wearable sensors were used to collect electrocardiogram, electrodermal activity, and respiration from spider-fearful individuals. We designed and applied ten approaches for data labeling considering individual biosignals as well as subjective ratings. Performance results revealed a selection of trained models adapted for two-level (low and high)

Psychosocial factors associated with male sexual difficulties.

The role of medical conditions, childhood experiences, and psychological and relationship factors in the development and maintenance of male … 2011. The results demonstrated that medical factors as well as current psychological factors (e.g., performance anxiety) were most likely associated with each male sexual difficulty. These findings are in contrast to those obtained with women, where relationship factors are strongly related to female sexual problems. They would suggest that the targets for sex therap …

Effects of false feedback on affect, cognition, behavior, and postevent processing: the mediating role of self-focused attention.

Current social phobia models (e.g., Clark & Wells, 1995; Leary & Kowalski, 1995) postulate that socially anxious individuals negatively appraise their anxiety sensations (e.g., sweating, heart racing, blushing) as evidence of poor social performance, and thus fear these anxiety symptoms will be noticed and judged negatively by others. Consequently, they become self-focused and hypervigilant of these sensations and use them to judge how they appear to others. To test this model, high (N=41) and low (N=38) socially anxious participants were shown false physiological feedback regarding an increas

Prevalence, associated factors, and machine learning-based prediction of depression, anxiety, and stress among university students: a cross-sectional study from Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Mental health challenges are a growing global public health concern, with university students at elevated risk due to academic and social pressures. Although several studies have exmanined mental health among Bangladeshi students, few have integrated conventional statistical analyses with advanced machine learning (ML) approaches. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with depression, anxiety, and stress among Bangladeshi university students, and to evaluate the predictive performance of multiple ML models for those outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional s

Severity Classification of Anxiety and Depression Using Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale and Patient Health Questionnaire: National Cross-Sectional Study Applying Classification and Regression Tree Models.

BACKGROUND: Scalable and accurate screening tools are critical for public mental health strategies, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) are widely used, their full application in large-scale programs can pose feasibility challenges. By contrast, shorter versions like GAD-2 and PHQ-2 reduce burdens but fail to capture symptom diversity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to optimize screening for anxiety and depression severity using classification and regression tree (CART) models, ident

Screening for Depression and Anxiety Using a Nonverbal Working Memory Task in a Sample of Older Brazilians: Observational Study of Preliminary Artificial Intelligence Model Transferability.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression represent prevalent yet frequently undetected mental health concerns within the older population. The challenge of identifying these conditions presents an opportunity for artificial intelligence (AI)-driven, remotely available, tools capable of screening and monitoring mental health. A critical criterion for such tools is their cultural adaptability to ensure effectiveness across diverse populations. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to illustrate the preliminary transferability of two established AI models designed to detect high depression and anxiety symptom sc

Classification of painful or painless diabetic peripheral neuropathy and identification of the most powerful predictors using machine learning models in large cross-sectional cohorts.

BACKGROUND: To improve the treatment of painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) and associated co-morbidities, a better understanding of the pathophysiology and risk factors for painful DPN is required. Using harmonised cohorts (N = 1230) we have built models that classify painful versus painless DPN using quality of life (EQ5D), lifestyle (smoking, alcohol consumption), demographics (age, gender), personality and psychology traits (anxiety, depression, personality traits), biochemical (HbA1c) and clinical variables (BMI, hospital stay and trauma at young age) as predictors. METHODS: The

An open-label study of levetiracetam for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety disorder is a disabling condition characterized by excessive fear and avoidance of social and performance situations. While a variety of effective pharmacotherapies exists, many patients do not fully respond to or tolerate available agents. Preclinical and early clinical experience with levetiracetam, a novel anticonvulsant agent, suggests that levetiracetam has anxiolytic properties and a favorable adverse event profile. Levetiracetam thus warrants systematic evaluation as a treatment option for anxiety disorders. METHOD: Twenty adult outpatients who were recruited

The impact of noise exposure, time pressure, and cognitive load on objective task performance and subjective sensory overload and fatigue.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory hypersensitivity (SHS) refers to an increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli, often leading to sensory overload and adversely affecting daily functioning and well-being. This study examined the effects of three situational triggers - noise, time pressure, and cognitive load - on task performance, sensory overload, and fatigue. Additionally, we sought to explore the associations between these effects and SHS, while accounting for other influencing factors such as personality, coping mechanisms, and anxiety. METHOD: We experimentally tested 105 university students, employi

Impact of central sensitization on pain, disability and psychological distress in patients with knee osteoarthritis and chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Central sensitization (CS) is becoming increasingly recognized as a significant factor in many chronic pain conditions, including knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and chronic low back pain (CLBP). Yet it presently remains unclear how strong is the involvement of CS in KOA and CLBP and which factors are involved in CS in these two chronic disabling diseases. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study in which included a total of 178 patients with KOA and 118 patients with CLBP. Inclusion criteria for eligible participants for the KOA group were a confirmed diagnosis of KOA according to the

Correlates of functional disability in essential tremor.

The decision to treat patients with essential tremor (ET) is based primarily on the functional impact of the tremor. Correlates of functional disability, apart from the severity of the tremor itself, have not been studied. The objective of this work was to study correlates of functional disability in ET, and to present data on the extent of functional disability in community-dwelling ET cases. ET cases and age-matched control subjects were ascertained from a tertiary referral center at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and a community in northern Manhattan, N.Y. Subjects underwent a 2.5-hou
