Iron dextran, an electron-dense tracer, was given intravenously (100 mg of iron/100 g of body weight) to 8 normal rabbits to study its movement from the plasma to the peritoneal cavity during peritoneal dialysis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the value of peritoneal washing (PW) cytology alone in upstaging carcinomas of the female genital tract (FGT).
STUDY DESIGN: The histologic reports and slides of surgically resected FGT carcinomas related to 75 malignant PWs were reviewed. For inclusion in the study, no ascites was present. The cases consisted of 28 primary and 4 metastatic ovarian tumors, 9 peritoneal "serous implants" from second-look laparotomy, 3 metastatic peritoneal carcinomas, 1 primary peritoneal serous carcinoma, and 19 endometrial, 6 cervical and 5 tubal carcinomas.

In this report we describe a case of a malignant cutaneous melanoma metastasizing to the pleural surface and peritoneal cavity 5 years after surgical resection of the primary lesion. Malignant cutaneous melanoma is a very aggressive cancer able to metastasize anywhere in the body. Pleural secondary lesions represent a rare event described only in a small number of patients and the association with peritoneal localizations may suggest an uncommon pattern of spread that we discuss.

Acute accumulation of chyle in the peritoneal cavity is rare. It is usually idiopathic and the diagnosis is made at laparotomy, when indicated because of signs of acute peritonitis. Drainage is the only treatment required and the prognosis is excellent. A 33 year-old man who was operated on for signs of acute peritonitis is described. There was more than a liter of chyle, but no underlying pathological condition was found. 3 months after discharge, physical and laboratory examinations were normal, with no evidence of chylomicron retention disease.

CASE: We report a case of peritoneal coccidioidomycosis mimicking ovarian carcinoma. The patient presented with a complex ovarian mass, ascites, omental caking, and an elevated CA 125. The ultimate diagnosis was not made until frozen section histopathology was performed at staging laparotomy.
