Neurobehavioral and bioaccumulative toxicity in adult in-vivo zebrafish model due to prolonged cadmium exposure in the presence of ketoprofen.

Increasing industrial activity causes the release of chemical compounds into aquatic habitats, including toxic heavy metals like cadmium and medications like ketoprofen, posing considerable ecological concerns. Although previous studies have shown that cadmium and ketoprofen individually cause cognitive impairment, there is a lack of information on the combined neurological effects of the two substances. We investigated the neurological consequences of persistent cadmium exposure in the presence of ketoprofen on adult zebrafish, providing an essential model for understanding cumulative impacts

Bartonellosis and human immunodeficiency disease (AIDS): L-forms as persisters, activating factors, and mechanism of disease.

Bartonella, genus Proteus, can cause immunodepressive disease. The organisms, in parasitized red blood cells, may invade the brain and every other system and space in the human body. Bartonella henselae is proposed to have a role in the pathogenesis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) encephalopathy. Bartonella bacilliformis produces two known toxins that can induce spasm and angiomatosis, respectively, and manifest as diseases associated with symptomatic AIDS. The skin lesions of bartonellosis may be mistaken clinically and histologically for Kaposi's sarcoma. Bacteria of the genus P

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide alleviate cadmium-induced mitochondrial dysfunction mediated pyroptosis in duck liver.

Cadmium (Cd) is a persistent environmental heavy metal pollutant that has been an important issue in toxicology research worldwide. This toxic element is non-degradable and accumulates indefinitely in the ecosystem, and gradually accumulates in living organisms through nutrient transfer, ultimately posing a significant risk to the health of animals. The hepatic system is both the main target organ for Cd bioaccumulation and the metabolic center of organisms, and is particularly susceptible to heavy metal exposure. However, the underlying mechanism of whether LBP protects against Cd-induced liv

First Report on the Trophic Transfer and Priority List of Liquid Crystal Monomers in the Pearl River Estuary.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are emerging organic pollutants due to their potential persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation. This study first characterized the levels and compositions of 19 LCMs in organisms in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), estimated their bioaccumulation and trophic transfer potential, and identified priority contaminants. LCMs were generally accumulated in organisms from sediment, and the LCM concentrations in all organisms ranged from 32.35 to 1367 ng/g lipid weight. The main LCMs in organisms were biphenyls and analogues (BAs) (76.6%), followed by cyanobiphenyls and

[Evaluation of the sequelae of occupational asthma].

Current knowledge of the evolution of occupational asthma is based on few clinical studies in groups of patients sensitized to red cedar, colophony, crab boiling water and organic isocyanates. Whatever the sensitizing agent, respiratory sequelae appear to be very frequent (50% or more of subjects removed from exposure) and characterized by the persistence of an asthmatic condition with a variable degree of severity. For the greater part of these cases certain features at the time of diagnosis assessment appear to be of prognostic value for evolution: age, duration of occupational exposure, dur

From Oil Spills to Air Pollution: The Emergence of Phenanthrene as a Ubiquitous Cardiac Toxicant.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are released into the environment primarily through industrial processes and the incomplete combustion of organic matter. Their persistence in air, water, and soil facilitates widespread environmental distribution and exposure that directly impact the health of humans, other animals, and ecosystems. In recent years, the 3-ringed PAH phenanthrene has drawn particular interest for its specific cardiotoxicity. Phenanthrene can be transformed in the environment and within the body, leading to metabolites that can also influence heart function. Phenanthrene a

Factors Influencing Dechlorane plus Distributions in Various Sheep Tissues.

Dechlorane plus (DP) is a potential persistent organic pollutant and its distribution in various tissues and organs of terrestrial organisms is currently unknown. DP concentrations in sheep tissues were determined in this study. The DP concentrations in the tissues decreased in the following order: abdominal fat > liver > stomach > heart > outer tenderloin > lung > hind leg meat > kidney > small intestine > tail fat > spleen > brain. Apart from brain and fat, anti-DP is enriched more readily than syn-DP in sheep tissues, but syn-DP is more readily enriched in brain and abdominal fat. The facto

Toxicity differences between HFPO-TA and PFOA, and combination with PP-MPs: evidence against HFPO-TA as a safe PFOA alternative.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been banned worldwide due to its high environmental persistence and biological toxicity, and hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) has become the most widely used alternative. However, the safety of HFPO-TA and its combined toxic effects with polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) remain unclear, posing challenges for soil pollution risk management. This study for the first time compared the toxicity of HFPO-TA and PFOA to Eisenia fetida under the same experimental conditions, and investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of P

Water contamination by delorazepam induces epigenetic defects in the embryos of the clawed frog Xenopus laevis.

Delorazepam, a derivative of diazepam, is a psychotropic drug belonging to the benzodiazepine class. Used as a nervous-system inhibitor, it treats anxiety, insomnia, and epilepsy, but is also associated with misuse and abuse. Nowadays benzodiazepines are considered emerging pollutants: conventional wastewater treatment plants indeed are unable to eliminate these compounds. Consequently, they persist in the environment and bioaccumulate in non-target aquatic organisms with consequences still not fully clear. To collect more information, we investigated the possible epigenetic activity of delora

The potential of microplastics acting as vector for triclosan in aquatic environments.

There is increased evidence of the co-occurrence of microplastics (MPs) with other co-pollutants in surface water globally, leading to ecological and environmental concerns. The risks and toxicity of co-occurring pollutants largely depend on the mechanisms controlling the activation of their various sources, their fate and transport in different environmental media. Due to their size-specific surface area, MPs in the environment can have a strong affinity for interactions with hydrophobic compounds and have a high sorption capacity for various emerging contaminants (ECs). ECs like the antibact

Peroxymonosulfate activation by Fe-N-S co-doped tremella-like carbocatalyst for degradation of bisphenol A: Synergistic effect of pyridine N, Fe-Nx, thiophene S.

Bisphenol A (BPA) has received increasing attention due to its long-term industrial application and persistence in environmental pollution. Iron-based carbon catalyst activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) shows a good prospect for effective elimination of recalcitrant contaminants in water. Herein, considering the problem about the leaching of iron ions and the optimization of heteroatoms doping, the iron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped tremella-like carbon catalyst (Fe-NS@C) was rationally designed using very little iron, S-C3N4 and low-cost chitosan (CS) via the impregnation-calcination method

Transfer kinetics, tissue distribution, and maternal transfer of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in laying hens: A laboratory-to-field validation and dietary exposure assessment.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), particularly short- and medium-chain CPs (SCCPs and MCCPs), are emerging persistent organic pollutants with increasing concerns for the environment and food safety. However, the toxicokinetics of CP congener groups in food-producing animals remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a 14-day exposure and subsequent 28-day depuration feeding study in laying hens to elucidate the kinetics, tissue distribution, and maternal transfer of SCCPs and MCCPs. The results showed that CPs accumulated rapidly in eggs, and clean feeding effectively reduced CP burdens with SCCP…
