Map of affective and maladaptive personality vulnerabilities in emotionally immature adolescents.

Adolescence is a developmental period in which affective reactivity, heightened sensitivity to social contexts, and still-maturing self-regulatory systems can increase vulnerability to maladaptive patterns of functioning. However, adolescent screening and research often consider emotional functioning, self-evaluation, and maladaptive personality traits in isolation, which limits integrative clinical decision support. This study proposes a clinically oriented "vulnerability map" that integrates (a) emotional maturity (as affect-cognition integration and frustration tolerance), (b) an affective

Avoiding unintended consequences: science of reading policies may harm deaf children.

Many U.S. policies inspired by the Science of Reading rest on two assumptions: (1) skilled reading always involves automatic mapping between written words and speech sounds, and (2) all children benefit from systematic instruction of phonological awareness and phonics. These assumptions are not wholly accurate, that they do not consider scientific evidence from deaf readers, and that policies based on these assumptions may be harmful to deaf children. First, skilled reading does not always rely on phonology. Evidence shows that deaf readers can read effectively without using spoken language ph

Character structure and performance on the MMPI.

In a sample of 74 normal adults, a typology of character structure based on the developmental theory of Piaget was used to predict performance on the MMPI. The typology's validity was assessed by examining its empirical relationship to 11 clinical scales of the MMPI. Significant differences among the character types were noted for 5 of the 11 scales examined (Hypochondriasis, Depression, Masculinity/femininity, Psychasthenia, and Ego strength). There were significant differences on three additional scales (Hysteria, Psychopathic deviate, and Hypomania) between subtypes of the most numerous cha

[Minutio existimationis. On the question of therapy of psychologically traumatized, deformed patients].

Short case histories of twin sisters with progressive juvenile kyphoscoliosis who were incorrectly brought up and finally scorned as "witches" by their parents are used as examples to explain that Minutio existinationis (M.e.) can be regarded as a severe psychological trauma. The article seeks an approach for therapy. Rehabilitation of the two patients concerned proved, regrettably, unsuccessful. This again confirms that the life of sickly children after childhood is formed by the behaviour of the parents.

The hysterical personality disorder: a proposed clarification of a diagnostic dilemma.

This paper reviews the marked confusion surrounding the diagnosis of the hysterical personality disorder, which has resulted from the use of vague and at times contradictory criteria in making this diagnosis. It is recommended that the diagnosis be based exclusively on psychodynamic characteristics, and a specific psychodynamic formulation is offered for this disorder. The formulation is examined from the perspectives of genetic development, drive organization, and ego and superego organization.

Progress in understanding personality functioning in light of the DSM-5 and ICD-11.

Updates regarding the dimensional model of personality disorder in the DSM-5 and ICD-11 have stimulated interest in the concept of personality functioning (PF). A growing number of literature has demonstrated the extensive empirical basis, validated evaluation tools, and clinical utility of the concept of PF. The concept of PF provides a construct for the diagnosis and evaluation of personality disorders. As a trans-diagnostic factor, PF is of great significance in the etiology and development of many mental and physical conditions. PF can be improved per se, primarily through psychotherapy. T

Clinical Pearls: Good Psychiatric Management for Borderline Personality Disorder and Transference-Focused Psychotherapy.

Good psychiatric management (GPM) for borderline personality disorder is a generalist strategic case management approach used by helping professionals of different training backgrounds to work with patients with borderline personality disorder. GPM includes a flexibly administered once-weekly psychotherapy for which a brief introductory course in GPM alone is considered sufficient preparation. GPM integrates concepts from specialized evidence-based treatments for borderline personality disorder, including transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP). This article describes the TFP elements that Jo

Suicidal Ideation among University Students: A Moderated Mediation Model Considering Attachment, Personality, and Sex.

The present study aimed to examine the link between attachment, personality traits, and suicidal ideation with consideration of the potential moderating role of age and sex. The Suicidal History Self-Rating Screening Scale, the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form, and the Attachment Style Questionnaire were administered to 183 students. There was a significant indirect effect of need for approval on suicidal ideation via detachment. Moreover, the moderated mediation models of need for approval and preoccupation with relationships on suicidality via negative affectivity were significant

Sociotropy, autonomy, and bulimic symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive-behavioral model of bulimia nervosa suggests that maladaptive cognitions are associated with the development and maintenance of bulimia nervosa. This study was conducted to evaluate (a) the relation between bulimic symptomatology and the cognitive-personality styles of sociotropy (reflecting themes of acceptance and approval) and autonomy (reflecting themes of independence and achievement), and (b) the specificity of the relation between these two cognitive-personality styles and bulimic versus depressive symptoms. Personality dimensions and measures potentially relevant to health: A focus on hostility.

Although it is clear that chronic, negative socioemotional patterns are associated with poor health and premature death, various overlapping concepts and measures are currently used, making research planning difficult and limiting attempts at theoretical development. This article reviews current issues and reports a study of 36 theoretically interesting and commonly-used personality scales that were administered to 454 undergraduates. The scales included the Cook-Medley scale, Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, the Spielberger scales, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, hardiness/alienation scale

Personality Traits and Risk of Eating Disorders in Men: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Eating disorders (EDs) have been understudied and misunderstood in men. Among the relevant factors in the risk, onset, and maintenance of EDs, personality stands out. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the relationships between personality traits and risk variables for the development of EDs in men. A total of 443 male university students (mean = 22.16 years) who completed the Spanish versions of the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) participated. Correlation analyses were performed, and in order to determine the predictive role of pers

Relationships of Personality Traits With the Taxonomic Composition of the Gut Microbiome Among Psychiatric Inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Through the brain-gut-microbiome axis, myriad psychological functions that affect behavior share a dynamic, bidirectional relationship with the intestinal microbiome. Little is known about the relationship between personality-a stable construct that influences social- and health-related behaviors-and the bacterial ecosystem. The authors of this exploratory study examined the relationship between general and maladaptive personality traits and the composition of the gut microbiome. METHODS: In total, 105 psychiatric inpatients provided clinical data and fecal samples. Personality tra

Self-Other Mentalizing and Attachment Insecurity in the Dimensional Model of Personality Disorders: From Research to Clinical Practice.

Research on different aspects of mentalizing is essential for understanding the mechanisms underlying personality disorders (PDs) and for informing psychotherapy approaches, in which mentalizing is considered a key mechanism of change. This study aimed to explore whether self- and other-mentalizing, in interaction with attachment insecurity, differentially explain Criteria A (level of personality functioning) and B (maladaptive traits) of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in the DSM-5. Our sample consisted of 109 participants (54% female, 41% male and 5% nonbinary). We used the S

Affective temperaments: unique constructs or dimensions of normal personality by another name?

BACKGROUND: Current models theorize that affective temperaments underlie the development and expression of mood psychopathology. Recent studies support the construct validity of affective temperaments in clinical and non-clinical samples. However, one concern is that affective temperaments may be describing characteristics that are better captured by models of normal personality. We conducted two studies examining: (a) the association of affective temperaments with domains and facets of normal personality, and (b) whether affective temperaments accounted for variance in mood symptoms and disor

Personality functioning in adolescents and its association with health-related quality of life and physical fitness.

Adolescence is a crucial developmental phase marked by major physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that shape self-perception and relationships, with lasting effects on mental and physical health. Personality functioning, a core concept in modern diagnostic systems, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), offers a dimensional framework that incorporates key developmental domains such as identity, self-direction, empathy, and intimacy. Early detection of impairments in these areas is essential to promote mental and physical well-being and to prevent the onset of m

An attachment theory approach to treatment of the difficult patient.

This article reviews the role of attachment in difficult-to-treat patients. It is suggested that difficulty often arises in the treatment of these patients because of their inadequate understanding of mental functioning in themselves and in others. The capacity to mentalize is seen as a function of early attachment relationships. Vulnerability introduced by insecure attachment is frequently compounded by a history of intense trauma, leading these patients to defensively inhibit their capacity to think about mental states in their abusers, which then generalizes to other attachment relationship

A delusional disorder that occurred in one of a pair of monozygotic twins.

The authors reported a pair of male monozygotic twins in one of whom a delusional disorder occurred, and discussed the etiology of that disorder. The analysis of the twins indicates the following: 1. The disposition for the delusional disorder might be related to a psychological tendency to experience a delusion that might be based on a genetic factor. This might be strengthened by the development of a hypersensitive personality (Kretschmer, E.) promoted by environmental factors. 2. A hypersensitive personality might be a significant risk factor for the delusional disorder.

[Dynamic diagnosis of psychopathies].

It has been discovered that in persons aged 18-20 years, the establishment of psychopathy is not always completed. Later many of them get steadily compensated and do not seek treatment. In view of this circumstance it is suggested that for this particular age dynamic diagnosis of psychopathies may be employed. It is based on the hypothesis of ontogenetic counterbalancing of early-age associated personality disharmony, of the development with age of the mechanisms of psychological sanogenesis and defence, and enhancement of the adaptive social structure of the personality conduct.
