Phytic acid in health and disease.

Phytic acid (PA), a major phosphorus storage compound of most seeds and cereal grains, contributes about 1 to 7% of their dry weight. It may account for more than 70% of the total kernel phosphorus. PA has the strong ability to chelate multivalent metal ions, especially zinc, calcium, and iron. The binding can result in very insoluble salts that are poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, which results in poor bioavailability (BV) of minerals. Alternatively, the ability of PA to chelate minerals has been reported to have some protective effects, such as decreasing iron-mediated colon

Lewis Acid-Mediated Deoxygenative Synthesis of Trivalent Sterically Hindered Phosphines from Aldehydes.

The efficient synthesis of trisubstituted trivalent phosphines remains challenging. Herein, we report a novel approach for rapid construction of these compounds from aldehydes under Lewis acid-mediated conditions. By using sterically hindered disubstituted phosphines, aldehydes can undergo a deoxygenative reaction to afford trivalent phosphorus compounds. This modular and practical method is characterized by operational simplicity, a broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance, which holds great potential for applications in organic synthesis.

Isolation of a Lewis base stabilized parent phosphenium (PH2(+)) and related species.

The parent phosphenium ion (PH2(+)), and even any phosphenium salts bearing a hydrogen (HRP(+)), have never been observed. The addition of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and carbon electrophiles to an NHC-PH adduct, featuring a very bulky NHC, allows for the preparation and isolation of such compounds. Computational investigations show that most of the positive charge is localized at phosphorus, demonstrating the phosphenium nature of this compound. Further, the PH moiety is able to utilize one or both of its lone pairs to bind to one or two metals.

Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors; phosphoryl-sulfonamides--a new class of high affinity inhibitors of isozymes I and II.

A series of phosphorylated aromatic/heterocyclic sulfonamides with the general formula ArSO2NHPO3H2 have been prepared by condensing ArSO2NH2 with phosphorus pentachloride, followed by controlled hydrolysis in the presence of formic acid. The new derivatives generally act as stronger inhibitors of two carbonic anhydrase (CA) isozymes, CA I and CA II, as compared to the parent unsubstituted sulfonamides from which they were obtained. The inhibition mechanism by this new class of CA inhibitors, as well as structure activity correlations for the series of investigated derivatives, are also discus

Efficient on-demand cuproptosis induction against triple-negative breast cancer via dual-responsive black phosphorus nanosheet.

Cuproptosis, a newly identified cell death pathway, has been shown by our analyses to be closely associated with the clinical prognosis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients and may potentially facilitate the elimination of TNBC. However, precisely and efficiently regulating cuproptosis in tumor regions in a controllable manner remains challenging. Here, a highly effective cuproptosis inducer based on black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs@Cu@PDA, denoted as BCP) is constructed, featuring acidic and thermal-responsive copper ion release, as well as enhanced cuprous ion (Cu+) loading capa

Usefulness of urinary parameters in advanced chronic kidney disease.

UNLABELLED: This review discusses the diagnostic value of urinary parameters in the setting of advanced chronic kidney disease and we present the key concepts that summarise the suggestions of the manuscript. URINARY VOLUME: The amount of fluid intake may be a non-established risk factor for CKD. For these patients, a urinary output ≥2-3 l/day is a reasonable proposal. This recommendation is not applicable to patients with cardiorenal syndrome or fluid overload risk. NA: This determination is very useful to monitor salt intake. Reducing urinary Na<120 mEq/day (≅salt intake≤5-6g) is a reasonab

Renal involvement in leprosy.

Renal involvement in 13 non-lepromatous and 17 lepromatous leprosy patients were assessed by routine urinalysis, detailed biochemical analysis of blood and urine and by renal histopathological studies and compared with 10 normal healthy controls. The presence of RBC and pus cells were detected in the urinary deposit of only one lepromatous leprosy patient in reactional phase. A reversal of albumin/globulin ratio was observed in 17.6% of non-lepromatous and 15.3% of lepromatous patients. 24 hours urinary excretion of sodium, potassium, chloride and aminonitrogen of the patients were within the

Acid-Base Mediated Ligand Exchange on Near-Infrared Absorbing, Indium-Based III-V Colloidal Quantum Dots.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) made from In-based III-V semiconductors are emerging as a printable infrared material. However, the formulation of infrared inks and the formation of electrically conductive QD coatings is hampered by a limited understanding of the surface chemistry of In-based QDs. In this work, we present a case study on the surface termination of IR active III-V QDs absorbing at 1220 nm that were synthesized by reducing a mixture of indium halides and an aminoarsine by an aminophosphine in oleylamine. We find that this recently established synthesis method yields In(As,P) QDs wi

Innate Antimicrobial Defense of Skin and Oral Mucosa.

This special issue intends to review and update our understanding of the antimicrobial defense mechanisms of the skin and oral cavity. These two environments are quite different in terms of water, pH, and nutrient availability, but have some common antimicrobial factors. The skin surface supports the growth of a limited range of microorganisms but provides a hostile environment for others. The growth of most microorganisms is prevented or limited by the low pH, scarcity of some nutrients such as phosphorus and the presence of antimicrobial peptides, including defensins and cathelicidins, and a

Roles of sulfur compounds in growth and alkaline phosphatase activities of Microcystis aeruginosa under phosphorus deficiency stress.

Microcystis aeruginosa is one of the most common algae found in eutrophicated water bodies. Alkaline phosphatase (AKP) can be produced by Microcystis aeruginosa to utilize organic phosphates under phosphorus deficiency stress, thereby AKP can be regarded as an important indicator for algal growth. Sulfur compounds are ubiquitous in waters, while investigation on the interactions between sulfur compounds and Microcystis aeruginosa is limited. In this work, we introduced 33 types of sulfur compounds to culture Microcystis aeruginosa, and the results demonstrated that algal growth is positively r

Phenotypic and genomic survey on organic acid utilization profile of Pseudomonas mendocina strain S5.2, a vineyard soil isolate.

Root exudates are chemical compounds that are released from living plant roots and provide significant energy, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources for microbes inhabiting the rhizosphere. The exudates shape the microflora associated with the plant, as well as influences the plant health and productivity. Therefore, a better understanding of the trophic link that is established between the plant and the associated bacteria is necessary. In this study, a comprehensive survey on the utilization of grapevine and rootstock related organic acids were conducted on a vineyard soil isolate which is

The chemical composition of the lipopolyacarideof Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

1. Lipopolysaccharide was isolated from both cell walls and acetone-dried whole cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (N.C.T.C. 1999). 2. Closely similar products are obtained, although that from whole cells cannot be completely freed from small amounts (2-7%) of residual nucleic acids. 3. The lipid moiety (23-33%) has a similar amino sugar backbone to that of lipids of enterobacterial lipopolysaccharides, but contains different hydroxy acids (2- and 3-hydroxydodecanoic acid and 3-hydroxydecanoic acid). 3-Hydroxytetradecanoic acid is absent, and 3-hydroxydodecanoic acid is the main N-acylating acid.

Bacterial formation of phosphatic laminites off Peru.

Authigenic phosphatic laminites enclosed in phosphorite crusts from the shelf off Peru (10 degrees 01' S and 10 degrees 24' S) consist of carbonate fluorapatite layers, which contain abundant sulfide minerals including pyrite (FeS(2)) and sphalerite (ZnS). Low delta(34)S(pyrite) values (average -28.8 per thousand) agree with bacterial sulfate reduction and subsequent pyrite formation. Stable sulfur isotopic compositions of sulfate bound in carbonate fluorapatite are lower than that of sulfate from ambient sea water, suggesting bacterial reoxidation of sulfide by sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. The effect of transient, moderate dietary phosphorus deprivation on phosphorus metabolism, muscle content of different phosphorus-containing compounds, and muscle function in dairy cows.

Hypophosphatemia is a common finding in periparturient and anorectic cattle. Although the clinical relevance of hypophosphatemia in cattle is uncertain, it has been empirically associated with persistent recumbency, specifically in periparturient dairy cows. The objective of the present study was to determine if transient dietary phosphorus (P) deprivation over a course of 5 wk, by feeding an approximately 40% P-deficient ration to lactating dairy cows, would result in altered muscle function or muscle P metabolism severe enough to present a risk for animal health and well-being. In addition,
