We are reporting here on the inexpensive fabrication and optical properties of an iron(III) oxide-chromium(III) oxide nanocomposite thin film of corundum crystal structure. Its novel and unique-designed architecture consists of uniformed, well-defined and oriented nanorods of Hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) of 50 nm in diameter and 500 nm in length and homogeneously distributed nonaggregated monodisperse spherical nanoparticles of Eskolaite (alpha-Cr2O3) of 250 nm in diameter. Methotrexate (MTX), a strong inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), has been widely used for chemotherapy for many types of cancer as well as for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The incidence of behavioural signs of mononeuropathy in rats subjected to chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve is unpredictable and often low. In the present study, an ischaemic lesion of the rat sciatic nerve was induced photochemically using a low power laser. Previous studies have shown that cellular stress agents such as UV radiation induce transcription from the long terminal repeat (LTR) of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Using HeLa cells stably transfected with the HIV-LTR sequence, which transcriptionally drives the chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) reporter gene, we examined the effects of multiple exposures to UVC (254 nm) on HIV-LTR-CAT expression. Low doses (< or = 5 J m-2) had no effect on CAT expression, but up to 29-fold induction was observed with 10 J m-2 when cells were harvested 48 h after completion of the exposure.

The cation pump activity of the ocular lens was damaged by exposure to light in the presence of riboflavin phosphate. The intensity of light was similar to that used for reading purposes. The observed light-induced damage was due to superoxide or its derivatives, the superoxide being produced photochemically. Such damage was attenuated by vitamin C in amounts comparable to that in the aqueous humor.
