Acorn-related acquired pseudomelanosis in Calabrian black pigs.

BACKGROUND: Melanosis of lymph nodes in black pigs has generally been related to regression of congenital melanoma and, occasionally, to ingestion of acorns. The aim of this manuscript is to confirm the hypothesis of a possible acquired acorn-related pseudomelanosis in the Nero Calabrese pig, a swine breed belonging to the group of Italian native breeds and whose coverage area corresponds to the region of Calabria, southern Italy. This pig is characterized by slow-growing subjects, producing, however, high quality meat suitable for the production of sausages and fine hams. The study was carrie

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a nonhereditary, rare polyposis condition, first documented by Cronkhite and Canada in 1955. The primary distinct features of this syndrome include ectodermal abnormalities and diffuse gastrointestinal polyp changes accompanied by protein loss. The primary clinical manifestations of CCS include hair loss, excessive pigmentation of the skin, and malnourishment of fingernails or toenails. Other notable symptoms include weight loss, protein-losing enteropathy, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, taste abnormalities, and atrophic glossitis, whi

Ocular findings in vitiligo and recommendations for dermatologists.

Since extracutaneous melanocytes in the eye may also be affected in vitiligo, a systematic review was conducted to explore the ocular manifestations of vitiligo. Studies point to a higher risk of ocular findings in periorbital vitiligo. Dry eye disease is the most reported ocular abnormality in vitiligo. Additionally, several small studies have found potential links to uveitis and glaucoma. Various other chorioretinal pigmentary changes are also reported, but without accompanying functional consequences or changes in vision. Although there is a need for larger studies to further elucidate thes

Diagnosing Corneal Pigmentation in Small Animals.

The transparency of the cornea is critical to its role in transmitting light. Loss of corneal transparency results in visual impairment. Corneal pigmentation results from melanin accumulation in the epithelial cells of the cornea. Differential diagnosis for corneal pigmentation include corneal sequestrum, corneal foreign body, limbal melanocytoma, iris prolapse, and dermoid. These conditions must be excluded to reach a diagnosis of corneal pigmentation. A myriad of ocular surface conditions are associated with corneal pigmentation, including qualitative and quantitative tear film deficiency, a

Dermoscopy of porokeratosis: results from a multicentre study of the International Dermoscopy Society.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of porokeratosis can be challenging, and knowledge about its dermoscopic features is limited. OBJECTIVES: To describe the dermoscopic features of porokeratosis of Mibelli and disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP) and the frequency of these features in a larger case series. The interobserver concordance was also assessed. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, members of the International Dermoscopy Society contributed macroscopic and dermoscopic images of histopathologically verified cases of porokeratosis of Mibelli or DSAP. Three observers in
