Physiological saline solution of enzyme-isolated small intestinal epithelium of rat embryos was injected into the thymus of adult rats, thus increasing the number of epithelial cells in the parenchyma. The effect of the cellular composition of the thymus parenchyma was studied with special regard to plasma cells. Considering the functional importance of epithelial elements in the lymphoepithelial organs, the intervention rendered the thymus similar to the lymphoid organs of the intestinal tract; Plasma cells failed to appear in the thymus, but their number in the lymph nodes surrounding the th…

Canine extramedullary plasma cell tumors (cePCTs) are common integumentary round-cell tumors. The presence of adipocytes among round cells, which is thought to be the result of trapping of subcutaneous adipocytes, is reported as a helpful diagnostic feature to distinguish cePCTs from other round-cell tumors in the skin. Here, we report our retrospective analysis of the prevalence, extent, and distribution of adipocytes in cePCTs from a single institution. We found adipocytes in 73 of 265 (27.5%) cePCT cases diagnosed from 2020-2024, suggesting that intra-tumoral adipocytes are a frequent histo

Plasma cell mucositis (PCM) is a rare inflammatory condition of the upper aerodigestive tract with a heterogeneous clinical course. Predominately seen in the oral cavity, laryngeal involvement and the requirement for tracheostomy have been rarely described. We describe the case of a man diagnosed with airway-threatening PCM isolated to the larynx requiring a tracheostomy. He responded to oral glucocorticoids and was decannulated only to present 3 years later with severe laryngeal stenosis requiring repeat tracheostomy insertion. Medical management in the form of immunosuppression is the mainst

Plasma cell myeloma (PCM) is a hematological malignancy characterized by systemic proliferation of neoplastic plasma cells within the bone marrow. Diagnosis requires clinical findings and immunohistochemical staining, including CD138, CD79a, cyclin D1, immunoglobulin κ (Igκ), and λ (Igλ). However, CD79a and cyclin D1 have limited sensitivity and specificity, and Igκ/Igλ assessment is often difficult due to overstaining. Therefore, more reliable antibodies are needed to accurately diagnose PCM. In this study, we examined the diagnostic utility of CD56 expression in PCM. We retrospectively perfo…

IgE multiple myeloma is an exceptionally unique subtype of plasma cell dyscrasia, accounting for only a marginal percentage of all multiple myeloma cases. Combined with its lack of generalized accepted treatment approaches, its rarity makes diagnosis and clinical management extremely difficult. Here, we report the case of a 50-year-old woman with no prior medical history who presented with progressive bone pain over a one-year period. She underwent an exhaustive diagnostic workup, which included imaging, laboratory workup, histopathology, and cytogenetic analysis. The integrated diagnosis was

Patients with plasma cell dyscrasia, including multiple myeloma, AL amyloidosis, and monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance, face a high burden of end-stage kidney disease, which limits survival and quality of life. Although kidney transplant offers potential benefits, it remains underused because of the high risk of recurrence and historically poor outcomes. A multidisciplinary panel of transplant nephrologists, hematologists/oncologists, and pathologists convened to evaluate contemporary evidence and evolving strategies in kidney transplant for plasma cell dyscrasias and end-stage kidne
