Radiation treatment using low power laser beams is recommended for chronic or recurring lesions. Personal experience is reported with emphasis on the fact that He-Ne laser treatment should be employed when topical or surgical therapy fails.

Alcohol consumption in rats leads to degenerative changes in the cerebellar cortex (described elsewhere). Purkinje cells show a loss of dendritic spines, but some of the intact spines elongate to 3-4 times their normal length. This is postulated as a plastic change resulting from the degeneration of the original axon terminal contact with a consequent elongation of the spine 'in search of' and finally synapsing with still viable parallel fibre terminals in the vicinity. Under these conditions the circuitry is radically altered.

Plastic ankle-foot orthoses (PAFOs) are worn by persons with hemiplegia to correct gait abnormalities such as foot drop during swing and insufficient pushoff during stance. A PAFO should resist plantarflexion sufficiently to provide toe clearance during the swing phase of gait without excessively increasing the knee bending moment during heelstrike. Reconstruction of defects in the nasal area is described. There are basic principles to be considered, especially the cause of the defect, which may be traumatical or due to a tumour. It makes a difference whether the defect is placed on the bridge of the nose or on the lobule, or if the columella or the alar areas are affected. Another point of view is the extent of the defect, especially if it is a penetrating defect. The adsorption of diazepam to infusion sets and plastic syringes was studied. Infusion solutions consisting of diazepam injection (Valium) in glucose 5.5%, or diazepam emulsion in a lipid emulsion (Intralipid 10%) were infused through two different infusion sets (Transcodan L-74 and Cutter IL). It was found that, when an infusion solution with a low diazepam concentration (0.04 mg/ml) was infused slowly (4 ml/h), the diazepam adsorption was more than 80%. A single surgical approach is proposed for correction of lipodystrophy of the upper and lower limbs, coexisting deformities, and other conditions affecting these areas. The procedure has great versatility, and results are satisfactory. The inevitability of noticeable scars, however, still constitutes a problem, mandating careful evaluation of the indications and a very realistic doctor-patient relationship.

Patients undergoing various plastic surgical procedures on their breasts were studied before and after operations with respect to sensation from crude touch, light pressure, and pain. The more extensive the operation on the breast (the more skin and breast tissue removed) the greater the postoperative decrease in sensation.
