Growth charts and prediction of abnormal growth - what is known, what is not known and what is misunderstood.

OBJECTIVES: Assessment of fetal growth has an important effect on perinatal morbidity and mortality. To understand what tool to choose best for a given population a basic knowledge of how growth charts are developed and used has to be acquired. For this reason, this literature review was performed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An extensive literature review aimed at identifying articles related to the development of growth assessment in both spectrums of abnormal fetal growth - large and small. The analyzed articles were chosen and presented to show both the historical aspects of growth assessment,

Pulmonary artery endothelial cell dysfunction and decreased populations of highly proliferative endothelial cells in experimental congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Decreased lung vascular growth and pulmonary hypertension contribute to poor outcomes in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Mechanisms that impair angiogenesis in CDH are poorly understood. We hypothesize that decreased vessel growth in CDH is caused by pulmonary artery endothelial cell (PAEC) dysfunction with loss of a highly proliferative population of PAECs (HP-PAEC). PAECs were harvested from near-term fetal sheep that underwent surgical disruption of the diaphragm at 60-70 days gestational age. Highly proliferative potential was measured via single cell assay. PAEC function was assess

Growth stimulation of ovarian and extraovarian mesothelial cells by corpus luteum extract.

Ovarian (OM) and extraovarian (EM) mesothelia represent a common source of gynecologic malignancies with yet unclear pathogenesis. Ovulation triggers a finite wave of DNA synthesis and morphogenesis only in native OM cells, probably through the activation of intraovarian growth factors. To evaluate their growth response to such factors, OM and EM cells were obtained from estrous New Zealand white rabbits by enzymatic dispersion and unit gravity sedimentation. Cell cultures were maintained in serumless, fibronectin-rich, HL-1 medium without or with rabbit corpora lutea tissue extracts (CLE). Th

Aortic growth rates in a Swedish cohort of women with Turner syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Aortic dilation, cardiac malformations and hypertension are known risk factors for aortic dissection in Turner syndrome (TS). In the current guidelines, rapid growth of the aorta has been added as a risk marker. This study aimed to estimate the growth of the ascending aorta over time, to identify risk factors of aortic growth, and to describe aortic complications in TS. METHODS: A transthoracic echocardiogram was performed at least twice in 101 women with TS, mean age 28 years, with a mean follow-up of 8.3 ± 3.4 (range 1-17) years. The investigator was blinded to the clinical stat

Epizootic Plague in Prairie Dogs: Correlates and Control with Deltamethrin.

The plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, is a generalist pathogen of flea (Siphonaptera) vectors and mammalian hosts. In colonies of prairie dogs (PDs, Cynomys spp.), Y. pestis causes occasional epizootics, killing ≥90% of PDs within weeks to several months. We evaluated the effectiveness of deltamethrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, as a tool for preventing plague epizootics among three PD species. Specifically, we studied PD population growth on paired plots treated with deltamethrin for flea control or left untreated as baselines. We also evaluated PD population growth relative to flea abundance…

Sonographic recognition of major malformations and aberrant fetal growth in trisomic fetuses.

Structural malformations and growth retardation are commonly observed in chromosomally abnormal newborns. This study assesses the sensitivity of ultrasound for detecting aberrant fetal growth patterns and chromosome-related major malformations. The study population consisted of 74 trisomic fetuses (trisomy 13, 9; trisomy 18, 22; trisomy 21, 43). Overall, 63% (38 of 60) of trisomic fetuses had at least one major malformation on postnatal examination. One or more major anomalies were identified by prenatal sonography in 68% (26 of 38) of these malformed fetuses and 43% (26 of 60) of the entire t

Anthropometric indices growth references (length, Weight and Head Circumferences) of children aged 0-24 months in North-East of Iran by GAMLSS.

BACKGROUND: Growth references play a crucial role in the screening, evaluation, and surveillance of children, aiding in the early identification of the requirement for diverse growth-promoting interventions. Variations in human growth across distinct ethnic cohorts arise from genetic disparities, lifestyle variances, nutritional diversity, and diverse social and environmental contexts. Consequently, the selection of growth references markedly influences the prevalence of developmental disorders and nutritional imbalances in children. The study aims to assess the growth percentile of children i

Factors associated with physical growth of children during the first two years of life in rural and urban areas of Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Differences between urban and rural settings can be seen as a very important example of gaps between groups in a population. The aim of this paper is to compare an urban and a rural area regarding child growth during the first two years of life as related to mother's use of antenatal care (ANC), breastfeeding and reported symptoms of illness. METHODS: The studies were conducted in two Health and Demographic Surveillance Sites, one rural and one urban in Hanoi, Vietnam. RESULTS: We found that children in the urban area grow faster than those in the rural area. There were statistic

Intratumoral submicron particle docetaxel inhibits syngeneic Renca renal cancer growth and increases CD4+, CD8+, and Treg levels in peripheral blood.

Administration of chemotherapeutics as direct injections into tumors offers increased anti-tumor activity and reduced systemic toxicity. In this study, the Renca syngeneic murine xenograft model of renal cancer was used to evaluate the effects of intratumoral (IT) submicron particle docetaxel (NanoDoce®) on tumor growth and immunomodulation. Tumor volume (TV) was compared to controls, including intravenous (IV) chemotherapy. Flow cytometry of peripheral bloods and tumors was used to evaluate immune cell populations. Groups of animals were inoculated with a second Renca tumor at a site distant

"When we have served meat, my husband comes first": A qualitative analysis of child nutrition among urban and rural communities of Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Stunting among children under five years of age is a global public health concern, especially in low-and middle-income settings. Emerging evidence suggests a gradual reduction in the overall prevalence of stunting in Rwanda, necessitating a qualitative understanding of the contributing drivers to help develop targeted and effective strategies. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of women and men to identify key issues that influence childhood nutrition and stunting as well as possible solutions to address the problem. METHODS: Ten (10) focus group discussions (FG

Towards better nutrition: lip service or a realistic fight?

Progress towards the objective of the World Food Conference of 1974 that "no child should go to bed hungry" is reviewed. The low market price of primary products keeps developing countries poor. Yet in these countries industry rather than agriculture has been supported by governments. All regions are increasing total food production but population growth threatens to offset this increase. In some areas there is decrease in food production per head of population. In many countries the social situation of women affects the nutrition of families. Other causes of malnutrition are discussed and fut…

Identification of SSR Markers Correlated with Growth Traits in Swimming Crab (Portunus trituberculatus).

The swimming crab, Portunus trituberculatus, holds significant economic value in aquaculture, and marker-assisted selection (MAS) offers a powerful strategy to accelerate genetic improvement of growth-related traits. In this study, we performed an association analysis between 40 SSR markers and growth traits in 244 P. trituberculatus individuals. High genetic diversity was observed, with mean Shannon's diversity index (SI) = 1.970, expected heterozygosity (He) = 0.773, and polymorphism information content (PIC) = 0.747. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis revealed that all 485 marker pairs we

Recombinant growth hormone improves growth and adult height: a comparison between treated and untreated patients with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) is a standard treatment for idiopathic growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) patients to normalize growth. Prior studies on children mainly focused on short-term growth velocity effects, with limited long-term data on adult height outcomes. This study aims to assess adult height outcomes in patients with and without rhGH treatment, as well as evaluate the efficacy of rhGH treatment in individuals with IGHD. METHODS: A total of 169 individuals with IGHD who had attained their adult height were recruited. The related clinical and laboratory data, i

Time scales and wave formation in non-linear spatial public goods games.

The co-evolutionary dynamics of competing populations can be strongly affected by frequency-dependent selection and spatial population structure. As co-evolving populations grow into a spatial domain, their initial spatial arrangement and their growth rate differences are important factors that determine the long-term outcome. We here model producer and free-rider co-evolution in the context of a diffusive public good (PG) that is produced by the producers at a cost but evokes local concentration-dependent growth benefits to all. The benefit of the PG can be non-linearly dependent on public go

Decomposition and decoupling analysis of carbon dioxide emissions in African countries during 1984‒2014.

The potential for mitigating climate change is growing worldwide, with an increasing emphasis on reducing CO2 emissions and minimising the impact on the environment. African continent is faced with the unique challenge of climate change whilst coping with extreme poverty, explosive population growth and economic difficulties. CO2 emission patterns in Africa are analysed in this study to understand primary CO2 sources and underlying driving forces further. Data are examined using gravity model, logarithmic mean divisia index and Tapio's decoupling indicator of CO2 emissions from economic develo…
