Prevalence and risk factors of headaches in middle-aged and older Chinese adults with hypertension: a cross-sectional study based on CHARLS.

Headache among individuals with hypertension warrants considerable clinical attention, yet evidence regarding its prevalence and associated factors in this population remains limited. Using data from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), this cross-sectional study included 2,186 middle-aged and older adults with hypertension. Headache status was assessed through self-reported questionnaires, and potential associated factors were examined across five dimensions of the Health Ecology Model. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors

Ear disease and hearing loss: a descriptive study of Aboriginal children living in metropolitan South Australia.

OBJECTIVE: This article aims to describe the rates of middle ear disease in Aboriginal children living in metropolitan Adelaide. METHODS: Data from the Under 8s Ear Health Program (population-based outreach screening) were analysed to identify rates of ear disease and the referral outcomes for children identified with ear conditions during screening. RESULTS: In total, 1598 children participated in at least one screening between May 2013 and May 2017. Males and females were equally represented; 73.2% had one or more abnormal findings on otoscopy at the first screening visit, 42% had abnormal

Elder Orphans Hiding in Plain Sight: A Growing Vulnerable Population.

Adults are increasingly aging alone with multiple chronic diseases and are geographically distant from family or friends. It is challenging for clinicians to identify these individuals, often struggling with managing the growing difficulties and the complexities involved in delivering care to this population. Clinicians often may not recognize or know how to address the needs that these patients have in managing their own health. While many such patients function well at baseline, the slightest insult can initiate a cascade of avoidable negative events. We have resurrected the term elder orpha

Bacteria-bacteriophage cycles facilitate Cholera outbreak cycles: an indirect Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Bacteria- Phage (iSIRBP) model-based mathematical study.

Cholera is an acute enteric infectious disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Despite a huge body of research, the precise nature of its transmission dynamics has yet to be fully elucidated. Mathematical models can be useful to better understand how an infectious agent can spread and be properly controlled. We develop a compartmental model describing a human population, a bacterial population as well as a phage population. We show that there might be eight equilibrium points, one of which is a disease free equilibrium point. We carry out numerical simulations and sensit

Pandemic emergency: A multi-level AI framework for analyzing psychological impact through public discourse.

Emergency management has become a widely discussed topic in recent years, particularly in relation to different types of emergencies such as climate change, natural disasters, public health, and armed conflicts. The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered unprecedented uncertainty, sparking a global emergency that raised concerns not only about health but also social, economic, and environmental stability. At a time when psychology is re-evaluating its role in supporting processes of change during emergencies, a qualitative approach can offer a concrete response to the needs that the population highli

Long-term psychological profile of general population following COVID-19 outbreak: symptom trajectories and evolution of psychopathological network.

AIMS: COVID-19 has long-term impacts on public mental health, while few research studies incorporate multidimensional methods to thoroughly characterise the psychological profile of general population and little detailed guidance exists for mental health management during the pandemic. This research aims to capture long-term psychological profile of general population following COVID-19 by integrating trajectory modelling approaches, latent trajectory pattern identification and network analyses. METHODS: Longitudinal data were collected from a nationwide sample of 18 804 adults in 12 months a

Health Literacy Among a Formerly Incarcerated Population Using Data from the Transitions Clinic Network.

Health literacy is increasingly understood to be a mediator of chronic disease self-management and health care utilization. However, there has been very little research examining health literacy among incarcerated persons. This study aimed to describe the health literacy and relevant patient characteristics in a recently incarcerated primary care patient population in 12 communities in 6 states and Puerto Rico. Baseline data were collected from 751 individuals through the national Transitions Clinic Network (TCN), a model which utilizes a community health worker (CHW) with a previous history o

Surveillance for acute insecticide-related illness associated with mosquito-control efforts--nine states, 1999-2002.

Ground and aerial applications of insecticides are used to control populations of adult mosquitoes, which spread such diseases as West Nile virus--related illness, eastern equine encephalitis, and dengue fever. This report summarizes investigations of illnesses associated with exposures to insecticides used during 1999-2002 to control mosquito populations in nine states (Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington) (estimated 2000 population: 118 million). The findings indicate that application of certain insecticides posed a low risk for acute, t

Supporting dialysis patients' self-management through a nurse-led program: a single-group pre- and post-test intervention.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing health problem in Vietnam, affecting approximately 10% of the population, many of whom require hemodialysis. There is a limited intervention to support these patients, so a brief self-management intervention using the teach-back method has been developed. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of a health education program on hemodialysis patients. METHODS: A single-group pre- & post-test intervention design was used to recruit 100 dialysis patients aged ≥ 18. The intervention involved face-to-face education using the teach-b

An Ounce of Prevention and a Pound of Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, underscoring the need for comprehensive prevention and rehabilitation strategies. Cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) programs are multidisciplinary, addressing risk factor management, physical activity (PA), smoking cessation, psychosocial care, and nutritional counselling to support recovery, enhance quality of life (QoL), and reduce secondary CVD events. Over the previous several decades, CR has evolved from inpatient care in hospitals to community-based, home-based, and virtual models, driven by effort

On March 30, 2014, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) of Liberia alerted health officials at Firestone Liberia, Inc. (Firestone) of the first known case of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) inside the Firestone rubber tree plantation of Liberia. The patient, who was the wife of a Firestone employee, had cared for a family member with confirmed Ebola in Lofa County, the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in Liberia during March-April 2014. To prevent a large outbreak among Firestone's 8,500 employees, their dependents, and the surrounding population, the company responded by 1) establishi

Evidence-Based Management of Heart Failure: Clinical Impact and National Health Service Implications.

Heart failure is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and poses a major health challenge in the United Kingdom (UK), where it affects a substantial proportion of the population and consumes a substantial proportion of National Health Service (NHS) resources. Despite therapeutic advances, prognosis remains poor, and recurrent hospital admissions contribute significantly to the overall burden. This review summarises current strategies for heart failure management, including pharmacological therapy, device-based interventions, lifestyle modification, and multidisciplinary team app

Cardiac care for Indigenous Australians: practical considerations from a clinical perspective.

Indigenous Australians have a much high burden of cardiovascular disease, which occurs at an earlier age than in the non-Indigenous population. Comorbidities such as diabetes are common. Early diagnosis of ischaemic heart disease may be difficult because of barriers such as distance to medical centres, communication problems and family and cultural responsibilities. Disparities in cardiac care between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations are well documented, with examples including reduced angiography and revascularisation rates in Indigenous patients. Indigenous patients can have poor he

Health care workers' perspectives on care for patients with injection drug use associated infective endocarditis (IDU-IE).

BACKGROUND: Despite high morbidity and mortality, patients with injection drug use associated infective endocarditis (IDU-IE) lack standardized care, and experience prolonged hospitalization and variable substance use disorder (SUD) management. Our study's objective was to elicit perspectives of health care workers (HCWs) who deliver care to this population by understanding their perceived patient, provider, and system-level resources and barriers. METHODS: This qualitative study included interviews of HCWs providing care to patients with IDU-IE from January 2017 to December 2019 at a single

Management of Virologic Failure and HIV Drug Resistance.

Approximately 20% of people with HIV in the United States prescribed antiretroviral therapy are not virally suppressed. Thus, optimal management of virologic failure has a critical role in the ability to improve viral suppression rates to improve long-term health outcomes for those infected and to achieve epidemic control. This article discusses the causes of virologic failure, the use of resistance testing to guide management after failure, interpretation and relevance of HIV drug resistance patterns, considerations for selection of second-line and salvage therapies, and management of virolog

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial evaluating a digital behavioral self-management intervention for adolescent migraine.

Poor disease self-management is a significant issue in migraine in children and adolescents. Comprehensive treatment for migraine may include pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and biobehavioral interventions as well as engagement in healthy habits. With the annual cost of nonadherence in US health care exceeding $300 billion, self-management of chronic conditions is critical to reducing morbidity. Although barriers to self-management are amenable to behavioral intervention/CBT, many adolescents lack the self-management skills to overcome them on their own, and clinic-based self-management

"It's a burden, it's a nuisance. I wish I didn't have these other ailments": a qualitative exploration of comorbidities management among older people living with HIV who use drugs in Vancouver, British Columbia.

INTRODUCTION: People living with HIV (PLHIV) who use illicit drugs (other than or in addition to cannabis) are living longer due to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Older PLHIV who use drugs have an increased risk for comorbidities, and managing multiple health conditions is a growing concern among this population. However, in-depth understandings of the lived realities and complexities of living with HIV alongside comorbidities among older PLHIV who use drugs remain limited. We sought to explore how older PLHIV who use drugs manage their comorbid conditions in a setting with universal ART access

A pharmacologic review of anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis occurs in the surgical population and may have devastating consequences. Anaphylaxis and anaphylactoid reactions are immediate hypersensitivity reactions that are most commonly precipitated by medications, insect stings, and foods. In the surgical population, 47.4% of immediate hypersensitivity reactions were precipitated by neuromuscular blocking agents, followed by latex and antibiotics in 20% and 18.1% of cases, respectively. Initial treatment consists of removing the precipitating trigger, administering epinephrine, and correct patient positioning. Secondary prevention measures
