Skeletal deformities in the elderly and their effect on postural sway.

In a group of 151 elderly men and women (age range, 65-85+), postural sway was studied in relation to various physical attributes and skeletal deformities that might be contributory factors. Weight, loss of height (span-height), scoliosis, grip strength, and the knee angle, measured laterally with the subject erect, all proved to be correlated with postural sway. Kyphosis was related to loss of muscle power and other general indications of frailty. Scoliosis appeared to be related to joint disease in the pelvis and lower limbs.

The Effect of Muscle Energy Technique and Posture Correction Exercises on Pain and Function in Patients with Non-specific Chronic Neck Pain Having Forward Head Posture-a Randomized Controlled Trail.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a common problem in individuals despite different types of working patterns. Forward head posture is a common identified cause of chronic neck pain in patients. The effect of long-term forward head posture can be loss of function which can limit individuals' capacity to work or do activities of daily living; hence it becomes necessary to intervene with muscle strengthening to improve neck stability, as well as mobility. PURPOSE: To assess effectiveness of muscle energy technique (MET) and posture correction exercises on pain and function in patients with non-specific …

Postural Sway Characteristics in Patients With Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness: A Comparative Study Between Psychogenic Vertigo Patients and Healthy Controls.

This study aimed to compare postural sway characteristics and evaluate postural sway as a potential biomarker for persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) to clarify diagnostic boundaries. A total of 36 participants were enrolled, including 26 (72.2%) with PPPD, five (13.9%) with psychogenic vertigo, and five (13.9%) healthy controls. Postural sway tests were conducted on all participants, measuring the center of pressure (CoP) area, CoP length, and Romberg ratio. A subgroup analysis was also performed based on the presence of preceding organic diseases. The postural sway tests were con

Assessing the Benefits of a Novel Postural Supporting Device on the Postural Development of Preterm Neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Feasibility Study.

Advances in neonatal intensive care have significantly increased the survival rates of preterm infants. However, many of these infants continue to face serious motor impairments, contributing to both short- and long-term morbidity. Therapeutic positioning is a key neurodevelopmental intervention in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), aimed at supporting posture and movement. This feasibility study evaluated the effects of a novel postural support device on the postural development of preterm neonates in the NICU. Nine medically stable preterm infants, with no diagnosed diseases or condition…

Immediate effects of real-time postural biofeedback on spinal posture, muscle activity, and perceived pain severity in adults with neck pain.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have investigated various types of postural biofeedback devices on different body regions to improve posture; however, they focused only on healthy adults without a history of chronic musculoskeletal disorders. In addition, those postural biofeedback devices used in previous studies are often designed for experimental research. The designs are usually bulky with many wires, which is not practical for everyday use. RESEARCH QUESTION: The aim of this study was to determine the immediate effect of a commercially available real-time postural biofeedback device on spin…

Influence of ankle plantarflexor fatigue on postural sway, lower limb articular angles, and postural strategies during unipedal quiet standing.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in postural control and in posture induced by ankle plantarflexor fatigue during a unipedal stance task. We also studied the postural strategies in the antero-posterior and medio-lateral planes used by participants to maintain balance. Thirteen young adults were asked to stand barefoot on their preferred leg as still as possible for 30s with vision or without vision. Participants performed postural trials before and after a fatigue protocol that consisted of standing on toes until exhaustion. Centre of pressure (COP) displacements were m…

Craniofacial Morphology and Foot Posture: Prevalence of Foot and Postural Deviations and Their Association with Sagittal Skeletal Class in a Cross-Sectional Clinical Study.

Objectives: To describe foot and global postural deviations in a mixed-age university-clinic sample and examine their associations with cephalometrically defined sagittal skeletal class and facial growth pattern. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 98 individuals aged 8-62 years; 76 participants (77.6%) were adults. Foot posture was assessed with the FPI-6 and plantar footprint, global posture by sagittal-plane visual analysis, and centre-of-pressure behaviour by instrumented gait in a subsample. Associations were tested using chi-square or Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact tests, Cramér's …

How to Train Your Posture: Haptic Feedback Can be Used for Postural Adaptation of the Trunk During Upper-Limb Motor Training.

Poor trunk posture, especially during long periods of sitting, could lead to problems such as Low Back Pain (LBP) and Forward Head Posture (FHP). Typical solutions are based on visual or vibration-based feedback. However, these systems could lead to feedback being ignored by the user and phantom vibration syndrome, respectively. In this study, we propose using haptic feedback for postural adaptation. In this two-part study, twenty-four healthy participants (age 25.87 ± 2.17 years) adapted to three different postural targets in the anterior direction while performing a unimanual reaching task u…

Association of high-pillow sleeping posture with intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular pressure (IOP) exhibits significant fluctuations in response to changes in body posture. Postural modification may serve as a potential adjunctive strategy for IOP management in glaucoma patients. METHODS: A total of 144 patients with glaucoma were enrolled in this study. IOP was measured and compared between the high-pillow position (head elevated by 20-35° using two pillows) and the supine position. Additionally, changes in jugular venous lumen in response to postural variation were evaluated via ultrasonography in 20 healthy volunteers. RESULTS: Compared with the s…
