Psychological Wellbeing, Worry, and Resilience-Based Coping during COVID-19 in Relation to Sleep Quality.

The current study evaluated the impact of psychological wellbeing on sleep quality during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A novel empirical model tested variables that mediate and moderate this impact. First, a relationship was established between psychological wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic and sleep quality. Second, resilience-based coping associated with the COVID-19 pandemic was tested as a mediator of the impact of psychological wellbeing on sleep quality. Third, dispositional rumination, mindfulness, and worry were compared as moderators of the impact of psychological wellbei

Psychosocial evaluation of bariatric surgery candidates: a survey of present practices.

OBJECTIVE: Successful outcome for bariatric surgery is largely dependent on patients' ability to adhere to postoperative behavior changes. A thorough psychological evaluation is often required before patients' approval for surgery. In addition to a standard psychiatric interview, assessment of behavioral components specific to this surgery seems indicated. No uniform guidelines exist on how to conduct such an evaluation. This survey was designed to collect information on the level of involvement of mental health professionals with bariatric surgery programs and their approach to evaluating bar

Are we on the same page? Examining client-therapist alliance congruence and psychological well-being.

This study examined client-therapist alliance congruence as a predictor of psychological well-being among 104 Filipino psychotherapy dyads. Descriptive analysis showed that although most dyads had non-identical ratings, 55.8% fell within the conservative broad agreement band; among dyads outside this band, therapist-higher discrepancies were more common. Client- and therapist-rated alliances were analyzed using polynomial regression with response surface analysis (RSA) to model both congruent and incongruent alliance effects on client psychological well-being. Treatment length, treatment inter

Exploring the Intersection of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and Dermatological Conditions: A Narrative Review.

This narrative literature review examined the intricate relationship between body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and dermatological conditions, with a brief focus on those characterized by conspicuous skin irregularities such as acne vulgaris, psoriasis, and vitiligo. Highlighting the significant prevalence of BDD among individuals afflicted with dermatological issues, our analysis illuminated the profound psychological repercussions stemming from an exaggerated preoccupation with perceived skin imperfections. Through an exploration of the underlying BDD symptoms, we analyzed the complex dynamics b

How to prepare for participating in a simulation activity.

RATIONALE AND KEY POINTS: Simulation-based education is an increasingly integral part of preregistration nurse education. Indeed, in the UK, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) allows up to 600 hours of simulated practice learning to count towards nursing students' and nursing associate students' total practice learning hours. However, students can sometimes feel anxious about participating in simulation activities, which can have an adverse effect on their learning experience. • Preparation before participating in a simulation activity can help to mitigate feelings of anxiety and enable s

The impact of a brief problem-solving training intervention for relatives of recently diagnosed breast cancer patients.

Previous studies have found high levels of psychological distress in women who have a family history of breast cancer. We evaluated a brief Problem-Solving Training (PST) intervention designed to reduce distress among women with a first-degree relative recently diagnosed with this disease. Participants were randomly assigned to either the PST group (N = 144) or a General Health Counseling (GHC) control group (N = 197). At baseline, these groups did not differ on any sociodemographic, risk factor, or psychological distress variables. We evaluated the impact of PST, relative to GHC, at the three

[Induction of general anesthesia in pediatric patients].

The induction of general anesthesia is one of the most stressful procedures during the perioperative period for pediatric patients. Postoperative negative behavioral changes, such as nightmares or separation anxiety are reported in the children undergoing general anesthesia. To avoid these problems, the anesthesiologists have to pay more attention to the psychological needs of young patients as well as the technical aspects. Preoperative interview is important to identify the child who has extreme fear and anxiety. Premedication with sedatives and psychological preparation are effective for th

Self-reported availability of research data in American Psychological Association journal articles: a cross-sectional investigation.

BACKGROUND: Prior evidence suggests that journals requiring open data are associated with higher levels of data sharing in the published psychology literature. Data sharing policies are not, however, consistently implemented or enforced. The American Psychological Association (APA), in 2020, signed onto the Transparency and Openness Promotion Guidelines, which promote increasingly stringent data sharing policies. The current study examined self-reported data sharing in APA journals and whether stricter policies are linked to higher levels of self-reported data sharing. METHODS: We assessed se

Perceptions of People With Multiple Sclerosis Who Practice Tai Chi and/or Qigong: A Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is important for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Tai chi and qigong (TCQ) are mind-body exercises shown to benefit physical, emotional, and cognitive health in many conditions, but research has been limited in people with MS. To understand potential benefits from regular TCQ practice and factors influencing feasibility, acceptability, and sustainability, we conducted a mixed-methods study through a survey and focus groups with people with MS who regularly practice TCQ. METHODS: We conducted focus groups with people with

Mechanisms of sustained mindfulness practice in stroke survivors: A critical realist secondary analysis of the HEADS: UP intervention.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Post-stroke anxiety and depression symptoms are common after stroke and can persist long-term. Despite this, there is a lack of long-term psychological support for post-stroke anxiety and depression. Mindfulness-based interventions are emerging as feasible, acceptable and potentially effective interventions for post-stroke anxiety and depression. Sustained use of mindfulness practice can help stroke survivors to self-manage their anxiety and depression in the long-term. However, stroke survivors' experiences of continued practice following a mindfulness-based interventi

The Impact of War on Asthma, a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: An EAACI Task Force Report.

Wartime events have been followed by an increase in asthma prevalence, which is believed to result from a combination of environmental hazards and psychological trauma. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate this relationship by pooling available data on various wartime exposures, such as occupational, environmental, and psychological factors. MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles that measure the effect of war-related exposures on asthma. Risk of bias was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project tool. The retrieved effects

Resilience as a Factor Influencing Psychological Distress Experience in Patients with Neuro-Oncological Disease.

Cancer causes psychological distress. Approximately one-third of all patients with cancer suffer from distress requiring psycho-oncological treatment. Examining factors contributing to their distress can inform approaches to counteracting them. Among such factors, resilience is considered to be a psychological adaptive capacity resulting from complex genetic, epigenetic, psychological, and environmental influences. For that reason, we investigated resilience as a factor of psychological distress experience among patients with neuro-oncological disease. To assess distress among patients with ne

Psychological Flexibility and Depression in New Mothers of Medically Vulnerable Infants: A Mediational Analysis.

Objectives Maternal depression in the postpartum period is prevalent and associated with negative child outcomes, including behavior problems and cognitive delays. Mothers of children admitted directly after birth to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at even higher risk for depressive symptoms and infants born premature and/or at low birth weight may be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of maternal depression. Understanding mechanisms, particularly modifiable mechanisms, involved in the development or persistence of depressive symptoms is critically important for developing effe

PTSD symptoms as risk factors for intimate partner violence revictimization and the mediating role of victims' violent behavior.

Apart from being a consequence of intimate partner violence (IPV), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can also be a risk factor for IPV revictimization. The current study examined how each of 4 PTSD symptom clusters (reexperiencing, arousal, avoidance, and numbing) related to revictimization in a sample of 156 female help-seeking victims of IPV, recruited from various victim support services in the Netherlands. In addition, we hypothesized that victim-perpetrated IPV would mediate the relation between PTSD symptomatology and IPV revictimization. Our results show that victims' PTSD reexperien

Younger women at increased risk for breast cancer: perceived risk, psychological well-being, and surveillance behavior.

The problem of breast cancer in younger women has received increased attention in recent years. As yet, however, little is known about the surveillance patterns and psychological characteristics of younger women who are at increased risk for this disease. This report presents a summary of preliminary data on risk perceptions, surveillance behaviors, and psychological well-being among women with a family history of breast cancer, with particular attention to younger women (under age 50). These data show that over three fourths of women aged 29 and younger hold the belief that they are likely to

Mental Health in the Youth Athlete.

Though research is inconclusive in being able to determine if young athletes are more or less likely to suffer from mental health disorders compared with their non-athlete peers, there are important psychological considerations that are unique to the athletic population. This includes depression in the context of overtraining and burnout, performance anxiety, perfectionism, psychological sequalae of concussion, and injury as an independent risk factor for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and high-risk behaviors. Optimization of mental health care in youth athletes requires continued

Psychotherapy in light of internal multiplicity.

The view that the self has multiple parts and that these appear in people seeking psychotherapy--and people conducting psychotherapy--is shared by clinicians of various orientations and supported by psychological research. It is useful for clinicians to think of patients as multifaceted and pay attention to the changes between facets that occur during therapy. They can thus help hidden parts to surface, facilitate dialogue between parts not in contact with each other, and convince excessively dominant or oppressive parts to make room for other adaptive facets. The authors contributing to this
