Development and Comparison of AI Algorithms for a Predictive Model of Cataracts: Analysis of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015-2017).

Cataracts are a major cause of visual impairment worldwide, particularly among older adults, with an increasing prevalence due to population aging. Surgery is the primary treatment; however, preventive strategies are crucial for reducing the disease burden. This study aimed to investigate dietary and health-related factors associated with cataract occurrence and develop a predictive model using machine learning. Data were derived from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015-2017. The study included 190 women aged 60-79 years: 124 with cataracts and 66 controls. Analyzed

Postoperative serum albumin drop predicts complications in primary total knee arthroplasty: a retrospective cohort study using XGBoost algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative complications that occur after TKA are still challenging to manage. While preoperative hypoalbuminemia has been proved to be a risk-factor indicator, the role of ΔAlb is yet to be determined. METHODS: In this retrospective study with a cohort analysis, an XGBoost machine learning model was trained with data collected from 758 TKA patients (2018-2022), to identify predictors that aid in the prediction of joint infections after TKA. The predictors to be entered into the model include 28 variables such as ΔAlb (preoperative values - postoperative values)/preoperative va

Predicting Linear Dimensional Accuracy of Material Extrusion Parts in Dependence of Process Parameters Using Neural Networks Optimized by an Evolutionary Algorithm.

Material extrusion (MEX) enables the economical manufacturing of complex parts and small lot sizes. The quality of the additive manufactured parts is significantly influenced by process parameters, which are defined beforehand. However, the resulting part quality is often unknown, leading to a reduced applicability of the process and relatively high safety factors for the process parameters to ensure a certain quality. This results in long print times and high material consumption. This article aimed for an accurate prediction of the linear dimensional accuracy in X, Y, and Z direction of part

Development of Machine Learning-based Algorithms to Predict the 2- and 5-year Risk of TKA After Tibial Plateau Fracture Treatment.

BACKGROUND: When faced with a severe intraarticular injury like a tibial plateau fracture, patients count on surgeons to make an accurate estimation of prognosis. Unfortunately, there are few tools available that enable precise, personalized prognosis estimation tailored to each patient's unique circumstances, including their individual and fracture-specific characteristics. In this study, we developed and validated a clinical prediction model using machine-learning algorithms for the 2- and 5-year risk of TKA after tibia plateau fractures. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Can machine learning-based proba

The r'-Wave Algorithm: A New Diagnostic Tool to Predict the Diagnosis of Brugada Syndrome after a Sodium Channel Blocker Provocation Test.

A diagnosis of Brugada syndrome (BrS) is based on the presence of a type 1 electrocardiogram (ECG) pattern, either spontaneously or after a Sodium Channel Blocker Provocation Test (SCBPT). Several ECG criteria have been evaluated as predictors of a positive SCBPT, such as the β-angle, the α-angle, the duration of the base of the triangle at 5 mm from the r'-wave (DBT- 5 mm), the duration of the base of the triangle at the isoelectric line (DBT- iso), and the triangle base/height ratio. The aim of our study was to test all previously proposed ECG criteria in a large cohort study and to evaluate

Covid-19 triage in the emergency department 2.0: how analytics and AI transform a human-made algorithm for the prediction of clinical pathways.

The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed many hospitals to their capacity limits. Therefore, a triage of patients has been discussed controversially primarily through an ethical perspective. The term triage contains many aspects such as urgency of treatment, severity of the disease and pre-existing conditions, access to critical care, or the classification of patients regarding subsequent clinical pathways starting from the emergency department. The determination of the pathways is important not only for patient care, but also for capacity planning in hospitals. We examine the performance of a human-m

Predicting Intraoperative Hypothermia Burden during Non-Cardiac Surgery: A Retrospective Study Comparing Regression to Six Machine Learning Algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent intraoperative hypothermia is a common complication that affects patient comfort and morbidity. As the development of hypothermia is a complex phenomenon, predicting it using machine learning (ML) algorithms may be superior to logistic regression. METHODS: We performed a single-center retrospective study and assembled a feature set comprised of 71 variables. The primary outcome was hypothermia burden, defined as the area under the intraoperative temperature curve below 37 °C over time. We built seven prediction models (logistic regression, extreme gradient boosting (XG

Dissecting contributions of individual systemic inflammatory response syndrome criteria from a prospective algorithm to the prediction and diagnosis of sepsis in a polytrauma cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is the leading cause of death in intensive care units (ICUs), and its timely detection and treatment improve clinical outcome and survival. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) refers to the concurrent fulfillment of at least two out of the following four clinical criteria: tachycardia, tachypnea, abnormal body temperature, and abnormal leukocyte count. While SIRS was controversially abandoned from the current sepsis definition, a dynamic SIRS representation still has potential for sepsis prediction and diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively elucidate the indivi

Prediction of Cobb Angle Using Deep Learning Algorithm with Three-Dimensional Depth Sensor Considering the Influence of Garment in Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common pediatric spinal deformity. Early detection of deformity and timely intervention, such as brace treatment, can help inhibit progressive changes. A three-dimensional (3D) depth-sensor imaging system with a convolutional neural network was previously developed to predict the Cobb angle. The purpose of the present study was to (1) evaluate the performance of the deep learning algorithm (DLA) in predicting the Cobb angle and (2) assess the predictive ability depending on the presence or absence of clothing in a prospective analysis. We inclu

Predicting Underestimation of Invasive Cancer in Patients with Core-Needle-Biopsy-Diagnosed Ductal Carcinoma In Situ Using Deep Learning Algorithms.

The prediction of an occult invasive component in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) before surgery is of clinical importance because the treatment strategies are different between pure DCIS without invasive component and upgraded DCIS. We demonstrated the potential of using deep learning models for differentiating between upgraded versus pure DCIS in DCIS diagnosed by core-needle biopsy. Preoperative axial dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 352 lesions were used to train, validate, and test three different types of deep learning models. The highest performance w

Using artificial intelligence algorithms to predict self-reported problem gambling with account-based player data in an online casino setting.

In recent years researchers have emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms as a tool to detect problem gambling online. AI algorithms require a training dataset to learn the patterns of a prespecified group. Problem gambling screens are one method for the collection of the necessary input data to train AI algorithms. The present study's main aim was to identify the most significant behavioral patterns which predict self-reported problem gambling. In order to fulfil the aim, the study analyzed data from a sample of real-world online casino players and matched their se
