Expanding the IDEA: Ongoing- and Evolving-Evaluation of an Art Therapy in Prisons Program.

In 2021 an article was published that presented an art therapy in prisons program that emerged through a contractual partnership between a major state university and that state's Department of Corrections, funded by Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The program was charged to provide art therapy with youthful offenders to alleviate behavioral, emotional, and intellectual impediments to their education. The program began in the summer of 2019 with a 3-year contract for two full-time art therapists for four sites. Responses to the annual reports and subsequent changes and benef…

The contributing factors to suicide in Italian prisons: An 11-year analysis (2010-2020).

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death globally, with approximately 800,000 deaths annually and accounting for 1.5% of all deaths. Risk factors are multifaceted, encompassing individual factors (such as genetics, family history and mental illnesses) and environmental factors (such as economic conditions, social support and life events). In prisons, suicide rates are markedly higher than in the general population, particularly in Italy, where the prisoner suicide rate is approximately 20 times that of the non-incarcerated population. There is, however, little research on suicide in Ita…

The Importance of Prisons in Achieving Hepatitis C Elimination: Insights from the Australian Experience.

Following the availability of highly effective direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) to treat hepatitis C infection, the uptake of treatment by pe … erspective we argue that the scale-up of hepatitis C prevention, testing, and treatment programs in prisons, along with the investigation of new and adapted approaches, is critical to achieving WHO elimination goals in many regions; the Australian experience is highlighted as a case example. We conclude by discussing opportunities to improve access to pre …

Intellectual disabilities in Irish prisons: Could Article 13 of the UNCRPD hold the key?

The prevalence of intellectual disabilities amongst adult prisoners in Ireland is higher than international estimates. There is little evidence that the development of diversion services has impacted such prevalence. The authors argue that Ireland's ratification of the UNCRPD presents a timely opportunity to address this problem through an awareness programme aimed at frontline law enforcement officials.

Improving tuberculosis management in prisons: Impact of a rapid molecular point-of-care test.

OBJECTIVE: To improve tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis in prison, we evaluate the value of the XpertⓇMTB/RIF Ultra assay (Xpert) as point-of-care (POC) in a French prison hospital. METHODS: We first validated Xpert use on raw sputum at the referent laboratory. Secondly, trained physicians at the prison hospital performed Xpert tests for each patient presenting TB symptoms. The results were compared with Xpert, microscopic examination, culture and drug susceptibility testing on the corresponding decontaminated specimens. RESULTS: 76 inmates were included in 15 months and 21 were diagnosed with TB.

Design of a tailored and integrated violence prevention program in psychiatric wards and prisons.

BACKGROUND: Violence and threats of violence against personnel at psychiatric wards as well as in the prison service is a major work environment problem. To date results from interventions to prevent violence and threats in these sectors have been inconclusive or of small effect. One of the reasons may be that violence and threats of violence occur as a consequence of a complex interaction between employee-level and management-level factors. OBJECTIVE: To design a tailored and theory-based intervention program directed at violence prevention in psychiatric wards and prisons that integrates th…

Truth Be Told: Evaluation of a Narrative and Skills Intervention in Two Women's Prisons.

This article describes the evaluation of a narrative and skills intervention to enable women to come to terms with their offenses, tell the truth, and then work to deal with the emotions and issues surrounding their offenses, in two southern U.S. women's prisons. The intervention involved skills building in communication, community building, creativity, and caring for the self, using narrative writing, speaking, and movement. There was broad agreement that the intervention had multiple positive impacts, including insight into factors that lead to incarceration, comfort with selves and better a…

Predictors of sexual behaviour among men and women in New York City area prisons.

The USA currently has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Individuals at greatest risk for HIV also tend to be among those at an elevated risk for incarceration. The HIV epidemic is driven by injection drug use and sexual behaviour, and estimates of prison-based sexual behaviour vary widely. This study examined sexual behaviour among 1369 incarcerated men and women in the New York City area. Approximately 13% of the sample (n = 176) reported being sexually active while incarcerated over the previous 6 months. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the predictors of p

Tuberculosis control in prisons, from research to action: the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, experience.

The high tuberculosis (TB) rates observed in the Brazilian prison population highlights the need for more efficient TB control measures in this population, especially in the state of Rio de Janeiro where detection rates are 30 times higher than in the general population. We present results of epidemiological, biomathematics modelling, molecular biology, psychosocological, architectural and juridical studies carried out in this state in order to assess the situation and to develop TB control strategies adapted to the specificities of the prison context. The implementation of these strategies im

[The actions of the Public Prosecution Service in the field of health in prisons].

In the violent, insalubrious and overpopulated prison environment in which the concerns of penitentiary managers are predominantly focused on security, several actors of the legal world work incessantly to ensure that prisoners enjoy living conditions and access to health care in accordance with their constitutional rights. However, their discourses only appear infrequently in academic research and studies on health in prisons. We decided to ask for the opinion of a District Attorney of the State Public Prosecution Office, Dr. Érika Puppim to share with readers her view and the difficulties in…
