Epidemiology of behavioral and emotional problems among children of Jamaica and the United States: parent reports for ages 6 to 11.

Research on child behavior problems requires standardized methodology in order to identify similarities and differences between societies. The present study compared parent-reported behavior problems of 360 Jamaican and 946 U.S. children aged 6 to 11. It revealed few differences in individual, total, internalizing (e.g., depression), and externalizing (e.g., fighting) problem scores as a function of nationality, gender, or age. Findings from this and other studies indicate the feasibility of a common methodology in cross-national studies of children's problems, but also the need for further re

Ecological effects of home-based, school-based, and community-based training of parents of children with learning and behavior problems.

A federally funded three year project to train parents of children with learning and behavior problems is discussed in terms of its ecological impact on parents, their children, their children's teachers, and on the community at large. The design of the project including the home intervention component, the school-based support group component, and the community component is briefly detailed. A comprehensive analysis of data on the effects of the various parent training components on parent, teacher and student perceptions of each other, as well as on student achievement, attendance and self-c

Discrepancies in perceptions of emotional and behavioral problems between adolescents and caregivers: a latent profile analysis from the SEARCH study.

Discrepancies in the perception of emotional and behavioral problems between adolescents and their caregivers can lead to ineffective interventions and misunderstandings in mental health care. Understanding these discrepancies and their underlying factors is crucial for improving adolescent mental health. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify distinct patterns (latent profiles) of caregiver- adolescent discrepancies in assessing emotional and behavioral problems using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and to examine the associations of these profiles with key demograph

The contribution of maternal sensitivity to children's behavior problems: A longitudinal study of Arab-speaking children with speech and language conditions.

Children with expressive language delay or stuttering conditions have an increased risk of behavior problems. However, the mechanism underlying this association is poorly understood. Studies show maternal sensitivity shapes the socioemotional development of typically developing children, yet little is known about this association in the context of children with speech and language conditions. To address this gap, we examined whether maternal sensitivity would be concurrently associated with children's behavior problems and prospectively predict changes in these problems over time. Forty Arab-s

Effect of Childhood Adversity on the Relationship Between Family Resilience and Behavioral or Conduct Problems in Children With Special Healthcare Needs.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral or conduct problems (BCPs) are common co-occurring conditions in children with special health care needs (CSHCNs), affecting their developmental and functional milestones. The role of family resilience in mitigating BCPs among these children and how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect this dynamic remain largely unclear. The aim of the study was to disentangle the complex interplay between family resilience, ACEs, and BCPs by examining how ACEs moderate the relationship between family resilience and BCPs. METHODS: The study included 19,922 CSHCNs aged 3 to 17 yea

Association Between Developmental Coordination Disorder Traits, Autistic Traits, and Emotional/Behavioral Problems in Japanese Preschool Children.

Background/Objectives: Few studies have examined the association between developmental coordination disorder (DCD) traits and emotional/behavioral problems in preschool children, considering the influence of autistic traits. Furthermore, no consistent results have been obtained. The aim of this study was to investigate how DCD traits in preschool children are related to emotional/behavioral problems, controlling for the effects of autistic traits. Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to 277 parents of children (154 boys, 73.0 ± 3.8 months) who underwent the school physical examinat

Network analysis of parental involvement, parent-child relationships, emotional and behavioral problems, and social media addiction in adolescents.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which parental involvement, parent-child relationships, emotional and behavioral problems, and social media addiction may interact in complex ways. This study aims to explore the network structure of these factors to identify key domains and their interconnections. A total of 668 adolescents participated in this study, with data collected in October 2024 through surveys. The Parental Involvement Scale, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Parent-Child Closeness Scale, and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) were used to a

Exploring the Relationship between Parental Stress and Child Behavioral Problems in Precocious Puberty: The Role of Parenting and Coping Strategies.

PURPOSE: Children with precocious puberty undergo rapid physical changes that may lead to behavioral problems. Parenting style, along with parental stress and coping mechanisms, are important parental factors that affect the development of behavioral problems in children. Therefore, we examined the serial mediating effects of parenting style and parent's coping mechanisms on the relationship between parental stress and behavioral problems in girls with precocious puberty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed a convenience sample of 200 mothers of girls with precocious pu

Behavioral, personality, and temperamental characteristics predict escalating alcohol and cannabis use and problems during the first-year of college.

Recent studies suggest that behavioral and temperament characteristics provide insight into individual differences in drug use behaviors, but few studies have described their prospective associations. We investigated how temperament and behavioral characteristics associate with drinking and cannabis use prior to and during the start of college. Participants were 252 college students (175 females, mean age = 18.56, SD = .38) from the MAPme Project. Behavioral and temperamental characteristics were assessed using the Transmissible Liability Index [TLI]) in orer to predict alcohol and cannabis us

Affective and Behavioral Responses to Time-Out in Preschool Children With Conduct Problems and Varying Levels of Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Punishment insensitivity characterizes individuals with callous-unemotional (CU) traits. This has been put forward as an explanation for their persistent conduct problems despite intervention. The purpose of the current study was to compare the emotional and behavioral responses to parent-implemented time-out within a behavioral parent training intervention between children with conduct problems who are high versus low on CU traits. Children (N = 87; M age = 4.88 years, SD = 1.32; 78% male) referred to a specialty clinic for the treatment of conduct problems were observed and coded during time

Associations of observed callous-unemotional behaviors in early childhood with conduct problems and substance use over 14 years.

Callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors (i.e., low concern and active disregard for others) uniquely predict severe conduct problems and substance use when present by late childhood. Less is known about the predictive utility of CU behaviors displayed in early childhood, when morality is developing and interventions may be more effective. Children aged 4-7 years (N = 246; 47.6% girls) completed an observational task wherein they were encouraged to tear an experimenter's valued photograph, and blind raters coded children's displayed CU behaviors. During the next 14 years, children's conduct problems

Gastrointestinal problems are associated with increased repetitive behaviors but not social communication difficulties in young children with autism spectrum disorders.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are more likely than typically developing individuals to experience a range of gastrointestinal abnormalities, including chronic diarrhea, constipation, food sensitivities, and abdominal pain. These gastrointestinal symptoms have been associated with higher levels of irritability and aggressive behavior, but less is known about their relationship with core autism spectrum disorder symptoms. We investigated the relationship between autism spectrum disorder symptom severity and gastrointestinal symptoms while accounting for three associated behavioral sy
