Professional strategies of medical officers of health in the post-war period--1: 'innovative traditionalism': the case of Dr Ian MacQueen, MOH for Aberdeen 1952-1974, a 'bull-dog' with the 'hide of a rhinoceros'.

Recent policies concerning the enhancement of preventive medicine and health improvement have raised important questions about leadership in public health and have emphasized the roles that can be played by local authorities. In this light, it is worth exploring the activities undertaken by local authority Medical Officers of Health (MOsH), until their posts were abolished in 1974. The process leading to 1974 has often been blamed, at least partly, on the complacency, lack of imagination and demoralization of MOsH. However, when John Welshman asked the question 'watchdog or lapdog?' of the MOH

Counseling and treating bad breath patients: a step-by-step approach.

Bad breath (oral malodor, halitosis) can be detrimental to one's self-image and confidence causing social, emotional, and psychological anxiety. With the majority of breath problems having an oral origin, the dental office is the most logical place for patients to seek treatment. When patients look to dental professionals for expert advice, it is critical they have the knowledge base and communication techniques to provide quality clinical assessment and implement effective intervention programs. Moreover, dental professionals should feel comfortable proactively counseling patients about oral

[Stress tolerance of the patient in pediatric surgery].

In pediatric surgery pain and suffering are not those dominant problems as in adult surgery. So even an extended operative procedure can be performed in a child without hesitation, if it seems to be useful. Much more than in adult medicine, the pediatric surgeon has to consider the consequences of his treatment on the whole family, esp. on the patient's mother. There is a lack of experience concerning toleration of a pregnancy by a mother who knows already about a treatable malformation of the fetus. Two cases are presented: omphalocele and gastroschisis.

Factors associated with role strain among male nursing students: Insights from stress-coping and stress-buffering frameworks.

BACKGROUND: Men remain markedly underrepresented in the global nursing workforce, and male nursing students frequently encounter gender stereotypes, limited clinical opportunities, and inadequate professional support during their training. These gender-related experiences may hinder professional socialization and contribute to greater role strain. Although previous studies have examined stress and role strain among nursing students, comprehensive quantitative evidence on the prevalence and associated factors of role strain among male nursing students, particularly those in Western China, remai

From idealistic helper to enterprising learner: critical reflections on personal development through experiences from Afghanistan.

There is little written about the cultural, social, and ethical challenges encountered by physiotherapists engaging in development work. This article takes a critical perspective on what it means to engage in development work as an expatriate physiotherapist, through a self-critical reflection on experiences from Afghanistan. The field notes from an ethnographic study of a development project conducted in Afghanistan were analysed to explore the transformative process of personal and professional development of the development worker. The critical reflective process entailed a change in meanin

Moderating Effect of Professional Identity on the Relationship Between Transition Shock and Career Intention Among Nursing Students During Clinical Internship: A Longitudinal Ecological Momentary Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Nursing interns (fourth-year undergraduate nursing students in their clinical practicum) often report low career intention, closely linked to transition shock during role transition. PURPOSE: To examine how transition shock affects career intention and the moderating role of professional identity using ecological momentary assessment. METHODS: The study tracked 1162 nested observations of 83 nursing interns over 14 days. Data were analyzed using a 2-level Hierarchical Linear Modeling. RESULTS: Transition shock was relatively high (69.22 ± 25.17) and varied significantly (P < .01

Changing "Hats": Benefits, Challenges, and Best Practice Proposals for Dual-Role Clinical Ethicists.

Clinical ethics consultation has become increasingly professionalized, yet many ethics consultants continue to maintain active clinical practice as physicians, nurses, or social workers. Despite the prevalence of these dual-role clinical ethicists, the benefits, challenges, and best practices associated with this model remain underexplored. Drawing on the experiences of physician-, nurse-, and social worker-ethicists, we examine how dual-role ethicists approach the intersection of clinical care and ethics consultation. We highlight key strengths of the dual-role model, including enhanced clini

Evaluating the Impact of Role Models on Medical Learners: A Multi-Generational Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Role modeling is a core, although often underrecognized, component of medical education that contributes to professional identity formation, the transmission of professional values, and specialty-related aspirations in an authentic clinical setting. In the context of evolving educational methods and increasing use of digital resources, examining whether learners and physicians continue to identify clinical educators as role models across different career stages has practical implications for faculty development and the clinical learning environment. METHODS: A national cross-secti

Survey of Local Residents Nationwide to Build "Mental Health Support" in Pharmacies.

For this study, we defined "mental health support at pharmacies" as "mental support and reassurance through explanations for medications and illnesses, and health consultations," which are not difficult from a mental health perspective, and conducted a survey on how pharmacies can contribute to mental health in local residents (n=580). However, according to this definition, 80.3% answered that they had not received "mental health support at pharmacies." We then asked 77 people who had experienced "mental health support at pharmacies" when they had obtained this support. The answers received we
