PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the commonest endocrine disorder of reproductive-age women. It may have implications for women with regard to anovulatory infertility, insulin resistance and elevated androgens. Furthermore, patients are prone to health problems in later life, including diabetes and cardiovascular risk. This review provides an update of recent findings for the management of polycystic ovarian syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus is a rare, life-threatening, acquired autoimmune bullous dermatosis. The prognosis of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) is usually regarded as more favourable than that of pemphigus vulgaris (PV). Our study aims to compare the clinical course of PV and PF in 37 patients.

This study was performed to clarify the prognosis of patients with surgically treated thymic epithelial tumors. The records of 131 patients who underwent surgical treatment during 1985-2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Pathologic review was done according to the WHO classification of tumors of the thymus. Acute methanol poisoning is mainly the consequence of voluntary or accidental ingestion. The mortality and morbidity rates remain very high despite intensive care therapy. Methanol by itself is poorly toxic. Methanol is transformed in the liver into formaldehyde and thereafter formic acid. Metabolic acidosis is the main biological feature of poisoning. Acidosis is related to formic acid accumulation, and also to a less extent to lactate production. In contrast to rodents, primates are relatively deficient in tetrahydrofolate reductase and therefore formic acid is usually the final metabolite.

We have studied 105 patients with 107 acute, primary, dislocations of the glenohumeral joint seen between January 1, 1991 and July 1, 1994. The mean time of follow-up was 71 months (46 to 91). In 34% the injury occurred during a sports activity and in 28% at home. The bias toward sport was even greater in patients less than 40 years of age, and in men. OBJECTIVE: To investigate a possible correlation between final visual acuity and the presence at baseline of various systemic and local (orbital/ocular) signs in patients affected by indirect traumatic optic neuropathy.
