[Splicing site mutation of D19S418 in PRPF-31 gene and its phenotypic characters with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the disease-causing gene and phenotypic characters of a large family with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP). METHODS: Disease status and associated ocular abnormalities of eight patients and six unaffected members who represent different generations of this family were assessed by measurement of visual psychophysics, full-field and multifocal electrophysiology (ERG and mfERG) and funds fluorescent angiography (FFA). The DNA samples of nineteen patients and fifteen unaffected individuals in this family were examined by Genome scanning, linkage analysis and m…

Null mutation in the rhodopsin kinase gene slows recovery kinetics of rod and cone phototransduction in man.

Rhodopsin kinase (RK), a specialized G-protein-coupled receptor kinase expressed in retina, is involved in quenching of light-induced signal … s by electroretinography (ERG); photoactivation was normal. Kinetics of rod bleaching adaptation by psychophysics were dramatically slowed in the homozygote but normal final thresholds were attained. Light adaptation was normal at low backgrounds but became abnormal at higher backgrounds. A slight slowing of cone deactivation kinetics in the homozygote was dete …

A selective history of the study of visual motion aftereffects.

The visual motion aftereffect (MAE) was initially described after observation of movements in the natural environment, like those seen in ri … s. Developing theories of cortical visual processing have drawn upon MAEs to provide a link between psychophysics and physiology; this has been most pronounced in the context of monocular and binocular channels in the visual system, the combination of colour and contour information, and in the cortical sites most associated with motion processing. The relativel …

Perceptual rhythms by phase-aligned perceptual performance peaks across trials.

Perceptual processing may rhythmically alternate. There is a line of evidence from dense sampling psychophysics supporting this claim: In such studies, performance in visual target detection or discrimination is repeatedly tested at various fine-grained time intervals relative to a reference event. This reference event is presented at the beginning of each trial, and it is thought to reset some internal oscillation. Performance time courses following the reset often show rhythmic oscillations in the sub-second range. The interpretation has been that several quickly alternating peaks and trough…

How the visual brain can learn to parse images using a multiscale, incremental grouping process.

Natural scenes usually contain many objects that need to be segregated from each other and the background. Object-based attention is the pro … ork chose the scale based on the distance between curves and the width of objects, just as in human psychophysics and the visual cortex of monkeys. The results provide a mechanistic account of the learning and execution of multiscale perceptual grouping in the brain.

Advancing spine connectomics and neural integration through machine learning and neuroengineering: a narrative review.

PURPOSE: Spinal connectomics is increasingly shifting understanding of the spinal cord from a simple reflex relay toward an active system th … l, though much of the direct mechanistic evidence for these computations originates in cortical and psychophysics literature; spinal-specific empirical validation remains an active research frontier. High-density recording and imaging techniques permit laminar-specific analysis of spinal activity, while computational models link circuit organization to function …

Critical spatial separation at the scale of V1 receptive fields determines motion segmentation.

Integrating elements that belong to a single object while segregating overlapping objects is a fundamental challenge for the visual system, exemplified by the phenomenon of motion transparency. While the middle temporal (MT) cortex is central to motion processing, the role of V1 in motion transparency remains controversial. It is still unclear at what spatial scale segmentation for motion transparency occurs. To address these questions, we conducted human psychophysics experiments using locally paired-dot stimuli moving in two directions separated by 90°. Subjects performed a 3AFC task to repo…

Decoding social touch: A multi-modal exploration of tactile perception, gender and culture.

Social touch plays a vital role in human development, communication, and general well-being. However, the mechanisms underlying how social touch elicits pleasant or aversive responses are poorly understood. Furthermore, it remains unclear how alterations in sensory processing, at both the perceptual level (i.e. detection and discrimination of stimuli) and behavioral level (i.e. response to stimuli), shape the experience of social touch, in addition to contextual factors such as gender and culture. In the current study, we used vibrotactile psychophysics and a novel social touch paradigm to ass…

Unifying network model links recency and central tendency biases in working memory.

The central tendency bias, or contraction bias, is a phenomenon where the judgment of the magnitude of items held in working memory appears … amics in putative working memory areas. Finally, we validate our model by performing a set of human psychophysics experiments of an auditory parametric working memory task.

Age-Related Deficits in Binaural Hearing: Contribution of Peripheral and Central Effects.

Pure-tone audiograms often poorly predict elderly humans' ability to communicate in everyday complex acoustic scenes. Can We Train Multisensory Integration in Adults? A Systematic Review.

The ability to efficiently combine information from different senses is an important perceptual process that underpins much of our daily act … for Randomised Control Trials. We found considerable evidence that in-task feedback training using psychophysics protocols led to improved task performance. The generalisability of this training to other tasks of multisensory integration was inconclusive, with few studies and mixed findings reported. Promising findings from exercise-based training indicate phy …

Vision as a Beachhead.

When neural circuits develop abnormally due to different genetic deficits and/or environmental insults, neural computations and the behaviors that rely on them are altered. Computational theories that relate neural circuits with specific quantifiable behavioral and physiological phenomena, therefore, serve as extremely useful tools for elucidating the neuropathological mechanisms that underlie different disorders. The visual system is particularly well suited for characterizing differences in neural computations; computational theories of vision are well established, and empirical protocols fo

Defocus blur discrimination in natural images with natural optics.

The lens system in the human eye is able to best focus light from only one distance at a time. Therefore, many objects in the natural environment are not imaged sharply on the retina. Furthermore, light from objects in the environment is subject to the particular aberrations of the observer's lens system (e.g., astigmatism and chromatic aberration). We refer to blur created by the observer's optics as "natural" or "defocus" blur as opposed to "on-screen" blur created by software on a display screen. Although blur discrimination has been studied extensively, human ability to discriminate defocus

Optimizing reliability and sensitivity of Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments for establishing point tactile thresholds.

Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments (SWM) are widely used to assess tactile point pressure sensitivity. However, the reliability of SWMs has been questioned, standardization of stimulus presentation procedures is lacking, and the sensitivity measure is commonly confounded by the response criterion. This study sought to assess the reliability of two versions of a forced-choice single staircase SWM test with the goal of optimizing test reliability with a minimum number of test trials. Test-retest and intra-test reliability coefficients for SWM threshold values from the plantar halluces of 24 normal s

Olfactory dysfunction in Wegener's granulomatosis.

PURPOSE: 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) cardiac scintigraphy was a useful imaging modality for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, but its diagnostic performances were variably reported. This retrospective study compared the diagnostic performances and investigated the optimal imaging protocol of 123I-MIBG cardiac scintigraphy at various imaging time points in patients suspected of Parkinson's disease in clinical practice. METHODS: In patients suspected of Parkinson's disease, clinical records, autonomic function tests, and 123I-MIBG cardiac scintigraphy were retrospectively reviewed.

Tactile localisation: the function of active antennal movements in the crayfish Cherax destructor.

Video recordings and single frame analysis were used to study the function of the second antennae of crayfish (Cherax destructor) as a sensory system in freely behaving animals. Walking crayfish move their antennae back and forth through horizontal angles of 100 degrees and more, relative to the body long axis. At rest, animals tend to hold their antennae at angular positions between 20 and 50 degrees. Movements of the two antennae are largely independent of each other. Before and during a turn of the body the ipsilateral antenna is moved into the direction of the turn. Solid objects are explo
