Malaria control in Northern Ghana: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Despite the achievements of the Ghana Health Service and its partners in reducing malaria morbidity and mortality in Ghana, the disease still poses a significant public health problem and a huge expenditure on the National Health Insurance Scheme and the economy. This review examined the strategies employed to control malaria in northern Ghana, explored the progress made, and discussed the challenges that persist. METHODS AND RESULTS: A literature search was conducted across four databases-Medline, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library-to identify studies conducted in Northern Ghan

Wastewater-Based Epidemiology for Viral Surveillance from an Endemic Perspective: Evidence and Challenges.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is currently used to monitor not only the spread of the viral SARS-CoV-2 pandemic but also that of other viruses in endemic conditions, particularly in the absence of syndromic surveillance. The continuous monitoring of sewage requires high expenditure and significant time investments, highlighting the need for standardized methods and structured monitoring strategies. In this context, we conducted weekly wastewater monitoring in northwestern Tuscany (Italy) and targeted human adenovirus (HAdV), norovirus genogroup II (NoVggII), enterovirus (EV), and SARS-Co

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms Associating Obesity to Bone Loss.

Obesity is an alarming disease that favors the upset of other illnesses and enhances mortality. It is spreading fast worldwide may affect more than 1 billion people by 2030. The imbalance between excessive food ingestion and less energy expenditure leads to pathological adipose tissue expansion, characterized by increased production of proinflammatory mediators with harmful interferences in the whole organism. Bone tissue is one of those target tissues in obesity. Bone is a mineralized connective tissue that is constantly renewed to maintain its mechanical properties. Osteoblasts are responsib

Advancing patient-centered care: moving from outcome-based to risk factor-based models using the big four risk factors.

This article reimagines the health care system to focus on risk factors rather than outcomes in order to improve patient-centered care and reduce health care expenditure. Patient-centered care has been a global priority since 2001 when the Institute of Medicine declared it an essential aim for health care systems. As part of this discussion and to help facilitate this change, the concept of the big four risk factors - diet and nutrition; physical activity; smoking and tobacco use; and excessive alcohol consumption - is introduced in the context of the Americas from which it originates. Using p

A framework for indirect elicitation of the public health impact of gambling problems.

Gambling problems are increasingly understood as a health-related condition, with harms from excessive time and money expenditure contributing to significant population morbidity. In many countries, the prevalence of gambling problems is known with some precision. However, the true severity of gambling problems in terms of their impact on health and wellbeing is the subject of ongoing debate. We firstly review recent research that has attempted to estimate harm from gambling, including studies that estimate disability weights using direct elicitation. Limitations of prior approaches are discus

Burden of non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease in Germany.

The objective of this study was to estimate the burden of disease in incident patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD).A sample of 7 073 357 anonymised persons covered by German public statutory health insurances was used to identify patients with NTM-PD. In total, 125 patients with newly diagnosed NTM-PD in 2010 and 2011 were matched with 1250 control patients by age, sex and Charlson Comorbidity Index, and followed for 39 months.The incidence rate for NTM-PD was 2.6 per 100 000 insured persons (95% CI 2.2-3.1). The mortality rate for patients with NTM-PD and the

Risk factors for problem gambling among indigenous Australians: an empirical study.

Despite a long history of gambling amongst many Indigenous peoples, knowledge about contemporary Indigenous gambling is sparse. In Australia, previous studies of Indigenous gambling have been severely limited in number, scope and rigour. The research reported in this paper is based on the first Indigenous-specific quantitative gambling research undertaken in Australia since 1996 and draws on the largest sample to date. This study examined numerous aspects of gambling among Indigenous Australians. After appropriate consultations and permission, the study collected surveys from 1,259 self-select

Reducing medication errors: a regional approach for hospitals.

Since the Institute of Medicine's report, To Err Is Human, and the subsequent publication, Crossing the Quality Chasm, the subject of reducing medical errors has gained considerable attention from patients, healthcare providers, employers and government organisations in the US. Most nonoperative errors are related to medications. Medication errors lead not only to negative repercussions subjectively experienced by both the patient and the healthcare staff, but also to additional expenditures due to complications. Education, adapting new safety systems and technology, and having clinical pharma

[Importance of increased physical activity in ambulatory cardiovascular prevention].

Current trends in public health provided potential arguments to, first, intensify the recommendations of a physically active lifestyle in the primary prevention of atherosclerosis and, second, to prescribe a supervised outpatient exercise training program for secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Regular physical exercise may positively influence cardiovascular risk factors (overweight, hypertension, hyperlipoproteinaemia, insulin resistance, hemostatic markers). Physical conditioning modifies the body composition in favor of an increased skeletal muscle mass, changes the eating hab

Epidemiologic control of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD), whether old or new, impose a heavy economic burden on the public health service. Behavioural changes that could reduce the incidence of STD in the general population take time to make their effects felt. Common and treatable diseases such as genital chlamydial infections can and should be tackled by the old familiar strategy for combatting STD, viz. case finding, diagnosis, contact tracing and treatment, parallel with counselling in sexual behaviour. The incidence of infection is largely dependent on the number of asymptomatic individuals with a chlamydial

Use of TaqMan array card to investigate bacterial isolates in diabetic foot ulcers.

Diabetic foot disease is a major public health problem, with an annual National Health Service (NHS) expenditure exceeding £1 billion. Infection increases the risk of major amputation fivefold. Due to the polymicrobial nature of diabetic foot infections, it is often difficult to correctly and rapidly isolate pathological organisms with conventional culture techniques and deliver appropriate narrow-spectrum antimicrobials. Rapid DNA-based technology, using multi-channel arrays, offers a quicker alternative and has previously been used effectively in other settings. We undertook a prospective co

The impact of delayed retirement on the financial sustainability of China's urban employee pension insurance fund.

Against the backdrop of accelerating population aging and mounting concerns over the financial viability of public pension systems, this paper develops an actuarial simulation framework that integrates demographic dynamics, fund revenue and expenditure rules, and the central adjustment mechanism. We evaluate four scenarios: baseline, delayed retirement only, national pooling only, and the combined reform. Our findings indicate that in the absence of policy intervention, regional disparities in fund balances intensify markedly: the western region enters cumulative deficit first, followed by the
