Improving Demographic Data Completeness Through Cross-Surveillance System Integration.

CONTEXT: Missing demographic data in electronic disease reporting systems are a national challenge. Accurate race and ethnicity data are vital for identifying health disparities, assessing health equity, and evaluating public health interventions. PROGRAM: We piloted a matching process to enhance demographic completeness for 3 diseases (hepatitis, influenza, campylobacteriosis) by linking individuals across 4 New York State public health surveillance systems (NYSIIS, eCR, CDESS, ECLRS). IMPLEMENTATION: Missing race and ethnicity data captured from this matching process were used to update ou

Health misinformation and disinformation: Old narratives, new technologies.

This editorial discusses how health misinformation and disinformation combine long-established narratives with new technologies that substantially increase the speed, reach, personalization, and apparent credibility of misleading content. The novelty of the contemporary information environment lies less in entirely new false narratives than in digital infrastructures that allow misleading content to be created, tailored, disseminated, and monetized at unprecedented scale. Online social media platforms and generative artificial intelligence (AI) have transformed these conditions, enabling misle

Urban Sewer System Is an Incubator of Sewage-Derived Mercury-Methylating Microorganisms: A New Public Health Challenge.

The release of sewage-derived Hg-methylating (hgcA) microorganisms is found to be the main contributor to global surges of MeHg levels in urban rivers, posing significant risks to ecosystems and public health. However, the sources and drivers of these microorganisms remain unclear. This study integrated global metagenomic analysis, field sampling, and laboratory experiments to investigate their sources and driving mechanisms in sewage. Large-scale public metagenomic analyses revealed that external microbial sources, such as drinking water and feces, contribute negligibly to Hg-methylating comm

Data standards and interoperability for health.

The need for improved pandemic and epidemic intelligence has underlined the significance of data standardisation in global health. This report examines the role of standardized frameworks in enabling seamless data exchange, facilitating real-time information sharing, and improving global coordination during public health emergencies. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored longstanding deficiencies in data interoperability that had already been identified in health systems and prior public health emergencies, both within and across countries. However, the pandemic brought unprecedented visibility an

Civil society and perilous medicine in Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Conflict has not been a public health priority for governmental organisations, and evidence on civil society organisation (CSO) contributions to the issue is limited. The present study synthesised the available evidence on the role of CSOs in conflict and health in Africa. METHODS: We employed a systematic review using a systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, CINHAL, Web of Science and Scopus for English written articles between 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2023. The four concepts for the search included CSO or non-governmental organisation (NGO), conflict, health and Africa. RES

Tuberculosis: An Ongoing Global Threat.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world's most urgent public health challenges, with a substantial global burden that continues to affect millions annually. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report 2024, approximately 10.6 million people developed TB in 2023, resulting in 1.6 million deaths. The highest incidence rates persist in low- and middle-income countries, where socioeconomic determinants such as poverty, malnutrition, overcrowded living conditions, and limited access to quality healthcare exacerbate disease transmission and worsen outcomes. The eme

Bridging Gaps or Widening Disparities? A Spatiotemporal Analysis of COVID-19 Therapeutic Distribution Policies in Texas.

This study examines how federal distribution policies affected regional disparities in access to COVID-19 therapeutics over time in Texas. To evaluate therapeutic accessibility, drug-to-case ratios were calculated by comparing the amount of therapeutic supply to confirmed case counts across counties during each policy period. A Bayesian spatiotemporal Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) model was used to analyse how healthcare infrastructure, demographic characteristics, and regional vulnerabilities affected access. During the period when distribution was managed by state authoritie

[HIV/tuberculosis co-infection: a request for a better surveillance].

The increasing endemicity of tuberculosis resulting from causes such as immigration, poverty, a declining public health infrastructure and co-infection by HIV/Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is leading to a change in tuberculosis control programmes. One of the main reasons for the resurgence of tuberculosis is HIV infection--the risk of tuberculosis is greater in HIV patients than in the majority of the population as can be seen from numerous research projects. The need for systematic testing for HIV infection in all tuberculosis patients by undertaking confidential HIV tests on admission to a tub…

Translating weight loss and physical activity programs into the community to preserve mobility in older, obese adults in poor cardiovascular health.

BACKGROUND: Limitations in mobility are common among older adults with cardiovascular and cardiometabolic disorders and have profound effects on health and well-being. With the growing population of older adults in the United States, effective and scalable public health approaches are needed to address this problem. Our goal was to determine the effects of a physical activity and weight loss intervention on 18-month change in mobility among overweight or obese older adults in poor cardiovascular health. METHODS: The study design was a translational, randomized controlled trial of physical act

The State of Primary Care in the United States.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Primary care, when done well, is the country's most cost-effective solution to runaway costs and widening health outcome gaps. Primary care is increasingly starved for resources, with associated reductions in relational continuity and comprehensiveness that collectively increase the risk of losing patient trust. The 2021 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, Implementing High-Quality Primary Care: Rebuilding the Foundation of Health Care, supported a cascade of federal initiatives to strengthen, coordinate, and create accountability for pri

Making sense of a new transport system: an ethnographic study of the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway.

An increase in public transport use has the potential to contribute to improving population health, and there is growing interest in innovative public transport systems. Yet how new public transport infrastructure is experienced and integrated (or not) into daily practice is little understood. We investigated how the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, UK, was used and experienced in the weeks following its opening, using the method of participant observation (travelling on the busway and observing and talking to passengers) and drawing on Normalization Process Theory to interpret our data. Using ex

Using DEA to evaluate efficiency and formulate policy within a Greek national primary health care network. Data Envelopment Analysis.

The purpose of this paper is to critically evaluate the relative efficiency of primary health care centers of the principal Greek public insurance provider, the Social Security Institute (IKA). The source of the efficiency data was the Statistical Unit of IKA. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, we analyzed data from 133 centers nationwide. Input variables included the number of personnel, stratified in different categories, and the number of people covered by each health center. The number of pensioners enlisted to each health care facility was used as an index of aging and vulnerability of the

Building a Rural, Coalition-Based Approach to Youth Substance Use Prevention: The Drug Free Dickson Coalition Model.

Youth substance use remains a critical public health issue in the United States, with rural communities experiencing disproportionate risk because of limited access to prevention resources and persistent barriers related to behavioral and mental health. Rural youth are often exposed to elevated risk factors, including geographic isolation, reduced availability of extracurricular and prosocial activities, transportation limitations, and fewer specialized prevention and treatment services. These challenges underscore the need for comprehensive, community-driven prevention approaches that are res

Model Systems infrastructure of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG): toward an integrated, mechanism-based framework for mental health research.

Mental health is fragile and disorders are highly prevalent arising from complex interactions between genetic, developmental, psychological, social and environmental factors. The key mechanisms underlying resilience, vulnerability factors, brain repair systems, and recovery remain poorly understood, hindering the development of effective prevention and personalized treatment. The German Center for Mental Health (Deutsches Zentrum für Psychische Gesundheit, DZPG) addresses these challenges through a nationwide, interdisciplinary research network that integrates basic science with translational

Chemical intimacy: A topological analysis of chemsex and harm reduction practices among gay and bisexual men in Taiwan.

While public health and biomedical research have examined how intimate relationships shape chemsex among gay men, little attention has been paid to theorizing the content and limits of chemically mediated intimacy itself. Conventional understandings of intimacy emphasize affective ties that require time, commitment, and care in forging deeper connections. In the context of sexualized drug use, intimacy may emerge through alternative bodily encounters, communal care, and queer world-making organized through shared rituals, infrastructures, and affective labor. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork
