The incidence of Bell's palsy is significantly higher during the last trimester of pregnancy and the puerperium. Suggested explanations for this association include fluid retention, hypertension, compromise of the vasa nervorum, infection (particularly with herpes simplex virus), and an autoimmune process. The diagnosis is confirmed by identifying lower motor neurone paralysis and excluding secondary causes for the symptom complex. The majority of cases resolve spontaneously. Recovery may be delayed or incomplete in older patients and those with recurrent episodes or severe initial symptoms. T

It has been suggested that the onset of RA symptoms is reduced during pregnancy and increased in the postpartum period. In the present study symptom onset in relation to the pregnancy prior to disease onset was compared between 135 young RA patients with definite RA and 378 controls with soft tissue rheumatism or osteoarthritis. Two RA patients developed symptoms during pregnancy versus 9 controls (odds ratio OR = 0.64). In the 3 months postpartum 5 RA patients and 5 controls developed symptoms (OR = 3.37). This paper describes a case of recurrent postpartum urethrovaginal fistula. The extent of the vaginal tissue loss and the perilesional scarring made direct closure of the defect not practicable. After suturing of the urethra, the anterior vaginal wall was reconstructed with an island bulbocavernous musculocutaneous flap raised from the left labium majus. Seven months after surgery, the flap healed well, and cystography showed a regular voiding without periurethral suffusions. Healing of thedonor site also was aesthetically satisfactory.

A 29-yr-old writer presented with seizures and left hemiparesis 8 days post-partum. Studies revealed right parietal hemorrhagic infarction secondary to superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. An anticoagulant was given for clot extension associated with increasing cerebral edema and coma. Inpatient rehabilitation was undertaken for residual left hemiparesis, most severe in the leg. Four, 7-, and 10-wk dry periods were randomly assigned to 366 dairy cows in eight herds. A multiple polytomous logistic regression analysis was conducted with the objective to reveal possible important effects of the dry period on the risk of contracting major clinical health disorders. Neurologic appearance of spinal osteochondrosis was assessed in 112 pregnant women and puerperae . In 75 females osteochondrosis involved the lumbosacral and in 37 ones cervical-thoracic regions. In the majority of the patients (79%) vertebrogenic lesions manifested with reflex syndromes. Provoking factors and the clinical pattern of the disease are considered with special emphasis on the role of pregnancy and labour as promoters of pain recurrences and the onset of new symptoms in women with neurological picture of osteochondrosis.

Within five years (1982-1986) there were in the Dept. Obstet. Gynec., Main Hospital of Suhl 382 curettements after 7,462 term deriveries (greater than 37. week of pregnancy). This is a frequency of 5.2%. Only in 25% there was a histologic confirmation of placental tissue. Wide excision is the recommended primary therapy for retroperitoneal fibromatosis. Radiation therapy and a variety of medications have been used to treat patients with recurrent tumors, but the response to these agents has not been uniform. The patient presented was successfully treated with medroxyprogesterone acetate for recurrent retroperitoneal fibromatosis that was refractory to multiple operative resections and radiation therapy.

Previous studies of the maternity blues have failed to identify a consistent factor discriminating between the group of women who experienced the phenomenon and those who did not.
