Level of UV-B radiation influences the effects of glyphosate-based herbicide on the spotted salamander.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are the number one pesticide in the United States and are used commonly around the world. Understanding the affects of glyphosate-based herbicides on non-target wildlife, for example amphibians, is critical for evaluation of regulations pertaining to the use of such herbicides. Additionally, it is important to understand how variation in biotic and abiotic environmental conditions, such as UV-B light regime, could potentially affect how glyphosate-based herbicides interact with non-target species. This study used artificial pond mesocosms to identify the effects of

Prophylactic and therapeutic effects of oral budesonide for acute radiation-induced enteritis and colitis in rats.

No satisfactory means has been found to control the symptoms of diarrhea and weight loss caused by radiation-induced enteritis and colitis. As a glucocorticoid, budesonide has multiple effects, and this study aimed to test whether it could be effective in treating these symptoms. Twenty-eight male Wistar albino rats were randomly allocated into 4 groups. Group I received 0.1 mg/kg/day budesonide at 8-h intervals for 5 days and did not undergo radiation. Group II received 0.1 mg/kg/day budesonide at 8-h intervals for 1 day before radiation treatment and 4 days after irradiation. Group III recei

Effects of p-coumaric acid on erythema and pigmentation of human skin exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

BACKGROUND: It has been recently recognized that p-coumaric acid (PCA) is a strong inhibitor of cellular melanogenesis. AIM: To evaluate the erythema-suppressive and skin-lightening effects of PCA after topical application to human skin. METHODS: The control and PCA cream products were applied twice daily to the skin of the forearm of 21 subjects before and after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to determine whether they could prevent erythema formation and pigmentation. The cream products were also applied to different areas only after the induction of erythema or pigmentation to determine whet

Amelioration of early radiation effects in oral mucosa (mouse) by intravenous or subcutaneous administration of amifostine.

PURPOSE: To quantify the reduction of radiation-induced oral mucositis by amifostine as a function of administration route. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mucosal ulceration of lower mouse tongue epithelium was analyzed. Amifostine was injected at 1.8 mg/injection subcutaneously (s.c.) or intravenously (i.v.), 45 min or 10 min prior to irradiation. With single-dose irradiation, a single amifostine injection was given. During daily fractionated irradiation (5 x 3 Gy) for 1 week, amifostine was administered s.c. or i.v. twice (days 0, 3), or s.c. on all irradiation days (days 0-4). With ten fractions ov

Effects of histamine receptor blockade on cardiovascular changes induced by 35 GHz radio frequency radiation heating.

1. The role of histamine in heat-induced cardiovascular changes is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to examine effects of histamine H-1- and H-2-antagonism on heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), localized body temperature changes, survival times, and lethal body temperatures that occur during the exposure of anaesthetized rats to 35 GHz radio frequency radiation (RFR). 2. Forty-eight ketamine-anaesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed, in several different treatment groups (n = 8 in each), to 35 GHz RFR at a level that resulted in significant body heating and subsequent

[Effects of extremely high-frequency electromagnetic radiation on the immune system and systemic regulation of homeostasis].

Low-intensity of electromagnetic radiation of extremely high frequencies (EHF EMR) is effectively used in medical practice for diagnostics, prevention and treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases of different etiology. However, in spite of existence of many hypotheses about mechanisms of EHF EMR effects on the molecular and cellular levels of organization of living systems, there is not conception that could explain all diversity of the EHF-therapy effects from unified approach. In our opinion, the problem of determination of mechanisms of EHF EMR effects on living organism is divided into tw

ATM mutations in female breast cancer patients predict for an increase in radiation-induced late effects.

PURPOSE: Mutation of the ATM gene may be associated with enhanced radiosensitivity and increased radiation-induced morbidity. Denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) is a powerful new technique proven to be sensitive and accurate in the detection of missense mutations, as well as small deletions and insertions. We screened female breast cancer patients for evidence of ATM gene alterations using DHPLC. This study attempted to determine whether breast cancer patients who develop severe radiotherapy (RT)-induced effects are more likely to possess ATM mutations than patients who

Dosimetric effects of patient displacement and collimator and gantry angle misalignment on intensity modulated radiation therapy.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this study was to examine systematically the dosimetric effect of small patient movements and linear accelerator angular setting misalignments in the delivery of intensity modulated radiation therapy. We will also provide a method for estimating dosimetric errors for an arbitrary combination of these uncertainties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sites in two patients (lumbar-vertebra and nasopharynx) were studied. Optimized intensity modulated radiation therapy treatment plans were computed for each patient using a commercially available inverse planning sys

Effects of chronic low-dose ultraviolet B radiation on DNA damage and repair in mouse skin.

Chronic exposure to sunlight causes skin cancer in humans, yet little is known about how habitual exposure to low doses of ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) affects DNA damage in the skin. We treated Skh-1 hairless mice with daily doses of suberythemal UVB for 40 days and analyzed the amount and distribution of DNA photodamage using RIAs and immunofluorescence micrography. We found that DNA damage accumulated in mouse skin as a result of chronic irradiation and that this damage persisted in the dermis and epidermis for several weeks after the chronic treatment was terminated. Although the persiste

Clinical study of the radioprotective effects of Amifostine (YM-08310, WR-2721) on chronic radiation injury.

We have previously reported that Amifostine, a radioprotective agent, was effective in treating acute radiation mucositis in the head and neck region. We found that when a considerable amount of Amifostine accumulates in the salivary glands, it may be useful in preventing chronic disturbances of salivary secretion. We have observed an increase in the uptake of Ga-67-citrate to the salivary glands when they were irradiated. In this paper, the radioprotective effects of Amifostine, in treating chronic radiation injury of the salivary glands, were studied, using the cessation of an increase in up

The active form of cytochrome c oxidase: effects of detergent, the intact membrane, and radiation inactivation.

Cytochrome oxidase is a multisubunit, intrinsic membrane protein with a complex function that includes oxidation of cytochrome c, reduction of oxygen and generation of a membrane potential. To clarify the relationship of its normal function to protein and membrane structure, we have examined the kinetic behavior of rat liver cytochrome oxidase in the intact inner mitochondrial membrane and in detergent solubilized states. Dissolution of rat liver mitochondrial membranes alters the kinetic parameters of the oxidase in a manner dependent in part on the dispersing agent, and characterized by a la

Sunscreens: topical and systemic approaches for protection of human skin against harmful effects of solar radiation.

This review deals with topical and systemic approaches for protection of human skin against the harmful effects of solar radiation. Two concerns about the deleterious effects of sun exposure involve: (1) acute effects (e.g., sunburn and drug-induced phototoxicity) and (2) potential long-term risks of repeated sun exposures leading to development of solar elastosis, keratoses, induction of both nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancer, and alteration of immune responses and functions. Action spectra of normal and abnormal reactions of human skin to acute and chronic effects of solar radiation are p

The acute effects of ionizing radiation on DNA synthesis and the development of antibody-producing cells.

Ionizing radiation inhibited the development of specific haemolysin-producing cells (PFC) and depressed the incorporation of (3H) thymidine by rabbit spleen explants responding to SRC in the culture medium. In contrast to these effects, the rates of incorporation of precursors for protein and RNA synthesis were much less affected. The depression of (3H) thymidine incorporation was found to result from a quantitative reduction of new DNA synthesis, without any change in the proportion of labelled cells, at any time after irradiation. The DNA synthesis occurring in these cells preparing to devel
