Residual cysts masquerading as periapical lesions: three case reports.

A residual cyst is an odontogenic lesion that survives after the removal of the associated tooth. The presence of this lesion adjacent to a remaining tooth may lead to incorrect, incomplete, or delayed treatment because it mimics a periapical lesion on the retained tooth. Three cases are reported that describe such conditions.

Intradural dermoid cyst. A case report.

Intraspinal tumors must be included in the long list of differential diagnosis in the patient presenting with the low-back radicular pain syndrome. These tumors are classified easily by their relationship to the dura, and the type of compression readily discerned by myelography. Intradural dermoid cysts account for 1% of intraspinal tumor, but prompt, meticulous, surgical intervention may result in an excellent outcome.

[Survey of histopathological diagnostic services in the Department of Oral Pathology, School of Dentistry, Higashi-Nippon-Gakuen University, 1979-1989].

This study is based on an analysis of oral biopsy specimens that were diagnosed histopathologically in the Department of Oral Pathology, School of Dentistry, HIGASHI-NIPPON-GAKUEN UNIVERSITY from 1979-1989. 1. The total number of specimens during the ten years were 503 (dental hospital: 363, other personal dental clinics: 140), it corresponding to 440 cases (patients). 2. There were 224 men, 210 women, and 6 unknown. 3. The most common cases were radicular cysts 11.1% (49 cases), the second dental granuloma 9.5% (42 cases), followed by fibroma (fibrous polyp) 7.7% (34 cases). 4. The largest gr…

[Orthograde (non-surgical) treatment of large apical lesions].

Many clinicians believe that large apical lesions, sometimes as small as ø ≥1 cm, should be treated surgically, as the size of the lesion leads to the assumption that it is a cyst that cannot be treated conventionally. According to Nair (1996), however, only 9% of all lesions are true radicular cysts. In the surgical treatment of large endodontic lesions, it is difficult to achieve good bony healing. Sometimes only scar tissue healing occurs (classification according to Rud and Molven). Due to the surgical procedure, a resti tutio ad integrum does not always result with regard to osseous heali…

Odontogenic cysts and odontogenic tumors in a large rural area from India. A 10-year reflection.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of odontogenic cysts and tumors along with age range, sex distribution, site of presentation and als … ed. Among them, 125 cases were diagnosed as odontogenic cysts and 42 cases were odontogenic tumors. Radicular cyst was the most frequently diagnosed cyst and unicystic ameloblastoma was the most frequently diagnosed tumor. A strong predilection for males was observed for both the odontogenic cysts and odontogenic tumors. Odontogenic cysts were more commonly seen …

Clinico-radiographic study of odontogenic cysts at a tertiary care centre.

BACKGROUND: Cysts of the jaws constitute an important pathology in the oral and maxillofacial region and are broadly classified as odontogen … patients with 53 males (53%) and 47 females (47%). The age range of patients was from 12-55 years. Radicular cyst was the most commonly diagnosed odontogenic cyst (63%) followed by dentigerous cyst (22%) and odontogenickeratocyst (14%). Anterior maxilla was the most affected site (44%) followed by posterior mandible (30%). CONCLUSION: Odontogenic cysts constit …

Association of Tarlov cyst with cauda equina syndrome and spinal cord infarction following caudal epidural block: A case report.

RATIONALE: Caudal epidural block (CEB), which injects drugs into the epidural space through a sacral hiatus, is considered a safer alternative to other approaches. Serious complications, such as cauda equina syndrome or spinal cord infarction, have been reported very rarely, but their coexistence after CEB, which may be related to the ruptured perineural cyst, also known as a Tarlov cyst, was not reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old male patient presented with bilateral lower extremity radicular pain. CEB was performed without image guidance. The patient exhibited sensory deficits below

From Quiescence to Proliferation: Molecular Mechanisms Driving Malassez Epithelial Cell Activation and Proliferation Into Inflammatory Radicular Cystic Transformation.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory radicular cysts (IRCs) arise from periapical granulomas (PGs). IRCs originate from Malassez epithelial remnants (ERMs), which can proliferate under specific biological stimuli. Although ERMs are common within PGs, only a subset of lesions evolves into IRCs, suggesting that specific molecular and immunoregulatory mechanisms govern this selective transformation. OBJECTIVES: Molecular mechanisms and cellular signalling pathways modulating the epithelial proliferation of the ERM represent an inflexion point in the progression from PG to IRC. The objective of this review i…

Conservative Approach in the Management of Large Periapical Cyst-Like Lesions. A Report of Two Cases.

Background and Objectives: Periapical cystic lesions are a pathology frequently addressed to endodontic specialists. Although their therapy is still not standardized, the treatment should be as conservative as possible and by endodontic means, as they are lesions of endodontic origin. The present case report describes two cases of upper central incisors with large cyst-like periapical lesions, and their one-year follow up. Materials and Methods: Endodontic orthograde treatment was performed under copious irrigation with sodium hypochlorite, in association with calcium hydroxide as an intra-can

Cystic lesion caused by latex material.

Treatment of a maxillary second premolar with an associated cystic lesion through conventional endodontic therapy combined with decompression and cyst enucleation is reported. Although cystic lesions frequently heal simply with endodontic therapy, refractory large lesions after nonsurgical endodontic treatment may require additional diagnosis and treatment. In this case, conventional root canal treatment resulted in incomplete healing and required further surgery. Following cyst enucleation with biopsy of the lesion and apical surgery on the tooth, the cause of the refractory lesion was found

Anatomical variation of maxillary sinus mimicking a periapical cyst: a case report.

Maxillary sinus can pose diagnostic dilemma radiographically because of its anatomical variation which can mimic a periapical pathosis. This case report deals with one such diagnostic problem, where a maxillary sinus was interpreted in an intraoral periapical radiograph as a periapical cyst. With the advances in imaging techniques, the use of an Ultrasound imaging together with application of Colour Power Doppler helped in revealing the contents of the radiolucent area and come up with an accurate diagnosis. Thus a thorough knowledge about the normal anatomy and its variations and proper diagn

Evaluation of immunoglobulin G synthesizing plasma cells in periapical granuloma and cyst.

Immunoglobulin synthesizing plasma cells for IgG were quantitated in 20 periapical granulomas and 20 periapical cysts, using unlabelled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex method. Result showed that immunoglobulin G producing plasma cells were predominant in periapical cyst as compared with periapical granuloma. A statistical significant relation was observed between these two lesions.

Horizontal root fracture--an unusual complication.

Cystic change at the site of a root fracture is an unusual sequelae. A case report of such an occurrence in a horizontal root fracture involving the apical third of a permanent central incisor in a 22-year-old man is presented and management of these injuries is discussed in brief.

The relationship of lesion size to diagnosis, incidence, and treatment of periapical cysts and granulomas.

The authors have reviewed the literature relevant to diagnosis, incidence, and treatment of periapical cysts and granulomas. They suggest that lesion size may have a significant influence in all those areas. On the basis of this viewpoint, they suggest alternatives to various commonly held assumptions and potential solutions to a number of controversial issues.
