Three-dimensional Bolton-Brush Growth Study landmark data: ontogeny and sexual dimorphism of the Bolton standards cohort.

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of craniofacial reconstructive surgery patients may benefit from comparison to average referent three-dimensional landmark data. These data may be useful for diagnosis, treatment planning, prosthetic design, or outcomes assessment. With regard to subadult patients, we hypothesize that the pattern of ontogenetic shape change of same sex, same ethnicity, referent populations will show gross uniformity. We present a preliminary shape analysis of 50 three-dimensional landmarks derived from 317 Bolton-Brush Growth Study biorthogonal image pairs. We determine which landmarks

Segmentation of lung parenchyma in CT images using CNN trained with the clustering algorithm generated dataset.

BACKGROUND: Lung segmentation constitutes a critical procedure for any clinical-decision supporting system aimed to improve the early diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. Abnormal lungs mainly include lung parenchyma with commonalities on CT images across subjects, diseases and CT scanners, and lung lesions presenting various appearances. Segmentation of lung parenchyma can help locate and analyze the neighboring lesions, but is not well studied in the framework of machine learning. METHODS: We proposed to segment lung parenchyma using a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. To reduc

Computer-assisted 3D reconstruction of the terminal branches of the cerebral arteries. III. Posterior cerebral artery and circle of Willis.

We present a three-dimensional anatomical computer model of the terminal branches of the posterior cerebral artery and circle of Willis, acquired from equidistant serial anatomical slices of three brains. The reconstructions provide a clear picture from all angles of the complicated course of the terminal branches of the cerebral arteries. This can help to identify the arteries in conventional and magnetic resonance angiography. Our rendition of the cerebral arteries can be matched with CT, MR und PET images to indicate the areas of extension of the individual branches, allowing neuromorpholog

A free-response evaluation determining value in the computed tomography attenuation correction image for revealing pulmonary incidental findings: a phantom study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare lesion-detection performance when interpreting computed tomography (CT) images that are acquired for attenuation correction when performing single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) myocardial perfusion studies. In the United Kingdom, there is a requirement that these images be interpreted; thus, it is necessary to understand observer performance on these images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anthropomorphic chest phantom with inserted spherical lesions of different sizes and contrasts was scanned o

Patient-specific finite element modeling of respiratory lung motion using 4D CT image data.

Development and optimization of methods for adequately accounting for respiratory motion in radiation therapy of thoracic tumors require detailed knowledge of respiratory dynamics and its impact on corresponding dose distributions. Thus, computer aided modeling and simulation of respiratory motion have become increasingly important. In this article a biophysical approach for modeling respiratory lung motion is described: Major aspects of the process of lung ventilation are formulated as a contact problem of elasticity theory which is solved by finite element methods; lung tissue is assumed to

The role of 3D cinematic rendering in the evaluation of upper extremity trauma.

Traumatic upper extremity injuries are a common cause of emergency department visits, comprising between 10-30% of traumatic injury visits. Timely and accurate evaluation is important to prevent severe complications such as permanent deformities, ischemia, or even death. Computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography (CTA) are the favored non-invasive imaging techniques for assessing upper extremity trauma, playing a crucial role in both the treatment planning and decision-making processes for such injuries. In CT postprocessing, a novel 3D rendering method, cinematic rendering (CR), employs soph

A method for assessing 3D shape variations of fuzzy regions and its application on human bony orbits.

In complex orbital defects, typically the eye globe is retruded in a pathological position. This is associated with severe functional and cosmetic post-traumatic conditions. Characteristically, the posterior orbital floor and the medial wall of the bony orbit (=region of interest, ROI) is fractured where adequate reconstruction is crucial for a satisfactory surgical outcome but difficult to achieve. By introducing the concept of preshaped, navigated orbital implants, the repair of complex orbital fracture patterns could be significantly facilitated and improved. However, this ROI, delineated a

Use of imaging to evaluate gout and other crystal deposition disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent advances in plain radiography and advanced imaging for gout, calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal arthropathy and basic calcium phosphate crystal arthropathy. RECENT FINDINGS: Plain radiography has diagnostic utility in the crystal-induced arthropathies. A gout radiographic damage index has been recently validated. High-resolution ultrasonography may improve noninvasive diagnosis of the crystal-induced arthropathies, and allow monitoring of intra-articular tophi in clinical trials. Computed tomography provides excellent definition of tophi a

Deep-learning based image reconstruction enables reduced dose CT pulmonary angiography with non-inferior image quality.

To investigate whether a CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) protocol with reduced radiation dose and deep-learning based image reconstruction (DLIR) is non-inferior in image quality to standard-dose CTPA using iterative reconstruction. A phantom study was conducted to estimate the additional radiation dose reduction enabled by high-strength deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR-H) compared to adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR-V 90%). Medium and large phantoms were used to simulate different body sizes. Subsequently, we reduced radiation dose of our clinical CTPA protoco

Automated skeleton based multi-modal deformable registration of head&neck datasets.

This paper presents a novel skeleton based method for the registration of head&neck datasets. Unlike existing approaches it is fully automated, spatial relation of the bones is considered during their registration and only one of the images must be a CT scan. An articulated atlas is used to jointly obtain a segmentation of the skull, the mandible and the vertebrae C1-Th2 from the CT image. These bones are then successively rigidly registered with the moving image, beginning at the skull, resulting in a rigid transformation for each of the bones. Linear combinations of those transformations des

Airway segmentation and analysis for the study of mouse models of lung disease using micro-CT.

Animal models of lung disease are gaining importance in understanding the underlying mechanisms of diseases such as emphysema and lung cancer. Micro-CT allows in vivo imaging of these models, thus permitting the study of the progression of the disease or the effect of therapeutic drugs in longitudinal studies. Automated analysis of micro-CT images can be helpful to understand the physiology of diseased lungs, especially when combined with measurements of respiratory system input impedance. In this work, we present a fast and robust murine airway segmentation and reconstruction algorithm. The a

Circle of Willis at CT angiography: dose reduction and image quality--reducing tube voltage and increasing tube current settings.

PURPOSE: To prospectively assess the effects of lower tube voltage and various effective tube currents on image quality for computed tomographic (CT) angiography of the circle of Willis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained. Patients or family provided written informed consent. Signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) were determined in a head phantom for various effective tube currents with tube voltages of 90, 120, and 140 kVp. Patients were referred for CT angiography because of acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (n = 20) or family history of cerebral aneurysms (n = 20).

Breast Density Analysis Using an Automatic Density Segmentation Algorithm.

Breast density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer. In this paper, we present an automated approach for breast density segmentation in mammographic images based on a supervised pixel-based classification and using textural and morphological features. The objective of the paper is not only to show the feasibility of an automatic algorithm for breast density segmentation but also to prove its potential application to the study of breast density evolution in longitudinal studies. The database used here contains three complete screening examinations, acquired 2 years apart, of 130 different
