Pretraining IP injection of naloxone (0.3 mg/kg) or amphetamine (2 mg/kg) enhanced performance during acquisition, but did not improve retention of active avoidance responses in rats. Thyroglobulin biosynthesis was studied in thyroid glands of rats treated during 30 days with a daily dose of propranolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic blocking drug. Thiamine deficiency leads to a moderate hyperlactacidemia. As a result of an acute alcohol exposure the hyperlactacidemia is increased. In addition metabolic and respiratory acidosis with a distinct low pH value occurs. These changes constitute vital risks and may be considered as basic arguments for the explanation of sudden death in chronic alcoholics.

Food spillage, food intake and body weight of four groups of adult rats were monitored daily as they were fed varying responses of deficient, marginal, or high thiamin (B) diet. Food spillage was a more sensitive index of the dietary B1 then either food intake or body weight change. The relation between functional and structural renal changes induced by lithium was studied in rats during long-term treatment and after withdrawal of lithium. Administration of LiCl in the diet for up to 21 weeks caused marked polyuria associated with a significant lowering of renal concentrating ability assessed by dehydration and vasopressin tests. The influence of cold exposure (+ 1 degree C for 24 h) was studied in rats dosed i.p. with 0, 2.5 or 5.0 mumol HgCl2/kg. Cold exposure of controls caused an increased diuresis and solute elimination, except sodium, with almost no variations in urine alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gammaglutamyl transferase (GGT). Proximal tubule brush border damage was demonstrated by a marked increase in ALP and GGT in HgCl2-dose animals at room temperature. Cold exposure protected against this kidney damage.

Changes in the frequency of germinative cells were measured daily during prepatent development in five-worm infections of Hymenolepis diminuta as well as at regular intervals during patency in five- and 20-worm infections.
