We investigated a neural reflex that controls the strength of inflammatory responses to immune challenge - the inflammatory reflex. In anaesthetized rats challenged with intravenous lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 60 μg kg(-1)), we found strong increases in plasma levels of the key inflammatory mediator tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) 90 min later. METHODS: Seventeen normal volunteer subjects were included. Activation of the sensory territory of the superior laryngeal nerve was performed by administration of low level brief electrical stimuli. This study demonstrates that unilateral excitotoxic lesionin of the pontine ITR increases the frequency of spontaneous central sleep apneas in freely behaving rats without alteration in average respiratory rate, minute ventilation, or sleep architecture. Thus, our findings suggest that the ITR may function specifically to dampen respiratory perturbations and that bilateral integrity of this structure is important. We may also speculate that the ITR functions to maintain stable breathing during sleep in man.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is a poorly understood neurovascular disorder characterized by pain, altered sensation, motor disturbance, soft tissue changes, vasomotor changes, and autonomic changes that occurs after trauma to an extremity. Unilateral leukonychia, Beau's lines, nailfold swelling, and nail clubbing have been an observed sequela of RSD. We present a case of a unilateral atypical trachyonychia occurring in the setting of RSD after traumatic fracture of a digit.
