Increasing school attendance and retention in refugee settings: Participatory development of the SchoolLinks intervention.

This study aimed to develop an intervention to improve consistent school attendance in participation with caregivers, teachers, and other stakeholders, in refugee settings in Uganda. In Phase 1, we organized four group model building workshops with caregivers and teachers in four refugee settlements to identify factors influencing attendance and caregiver engagement in education, and generate proposed actions to address them. We synthesized the outputs into a causal map and set of intervention strategies. These were reviewed through four respondent validation workshops with caregivers, teacher

Asymptomatic Tuberculosis: The Silent Face of the Disease Among Migrants and Refugees and the Challenges in Brazil.

Historically, tuberculosis has been conceptualized in a binary manner as either tuberculosis infection or tuberculosis disease. However, eme … ulosis appears to be an important challenge to disease elimination, particularly among migrants and refugees, demanding early diagnosis and treatment to interrupt community transmission and prevent avoidable deaths. It may be important to consider adopting an active screening strategy that is sensitive to asymptomatic individuals.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the Context of Global Travel, Migration, Refugee Populations, and Humanitarian Crises.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne infection caused by protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Leishmania. CL is an emerging global health concern due to increasing migration, travel, and climate change. Traditionally, it was confined to endemic regions such as the Americas, the Middle East, and Central Asia; however, it is now spreading to non-endemic areas. Climate change has further contributed to the expansion of sandfly habitats, increasing CL transmission risk in previously unaffected areas. Healthcare providers in non-endemic regions often misdiagnose CL, delaying treatme

Depression among refugee youth in an outpatient healthcare center-prevalence and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Due to armed conflict and other crises, many children worldwide have to flee their home country and are, consequently, at a high risk for mental health problems. OBJECTIVE: As the majority of previous research on refugee minors focused on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors for depression in a clinical sample of refugee youth. METHODS: Data were collected during the standard diagnostic process in an outpatient refugee clinic in Germany. We assessed the prevalence of depression based on a diagnostic interview and investigated t

"We use it a lot for everything": Antibioticalization and everyday life in a refugee camp in Lebanon.

Increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance has accelerated global efforts to reduce antibiotic use. While antibiotic resistance poses a significant threat, especially in low-income settings, there is a scarcity of research on how people in such environments, including refugee camps, access and use antibiotics. This article explores factors that contribute to the shaping of antibiotic use in Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon. It is based on six months of fieldwork from October 2021 to April 2022 in Shatila, consisting of participant observation, semi-structured interviews and group workshops wi

The Impact of Religion and Spirituality on Suicide Risk in Veterans and Refugees With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

It has been suggested that religion and spirituality have a protective impact on suicide risk in populations living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This review sought to examine the association between suicide risk among veterans and refugees with PTSD and religion or spirituality as a modifying factor. Two databases, PubMed and Embase, were searched and 10 publications were identified and included. Seven publications found that religion or spirituality was associated with lower suicide risk. The findings in this study suggest that religion and spirituality contain social as well as…

Prevalence of anti-Leptospira antibodies and associated risk factors in the Malaysian refugee communities.

BACKGROUND: Refugees in Malaysia, who are afflicted by poverty, conflict and poor health, are vulnerable to a range of zoonotic infections in the deprived environmental and social conditions under which they live. Exposure to infections such as leptospirosis, for which rodents are primary hosts, is of particular concern. METHODS: A wellness program was conducted to determine the presence of antibodies against Leptospira (seroprevalence) in 11 refugee community schools and centers in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. A total of 433 samples were assessed for IgG and IgM antibodies against Leptospira,…

Understanding wellness and barriers to care among Iraqi refugee women in the United States.

Iraqi refugees in the US experience a high prevalence of non-communicable diseases. In this article, we explore how cultural and structural realities intersect to influence utilisation of preventative healthcare and cancer screening with the aim of understanding health disparities in this population. We conducted three focus group discussions with a total of 14 Iraqi refugee women living in a northeastern US city in 2016 and analysed the qualitative data using a thematic analysis. Eight themes emerged from our data: (a) 'prevention is better than cure:' Iraqi refugee women maintain wellness; (…

Understanding the risk factors for HIV acquisition among refugee women in South Africa.

The prevalence of HIV in South Africa is among the highest in the world. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the risks for HIV transmission among refugee women residing in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Qualitative interviews were conducted among refugee women originally from Sub-Saharan African countries. They reported sexual abuse by their intimate partners who were also having extramarital affairs with the local women. Condom use was low, with the women unable to negotiate use, due to fear of violence and religious beliefs, making them vulnerable to contracting HIV. Women
