Long-term administration of neuroleptics to rats produces a syndrome of vacuous chewing movements (VCMs). The validity of the VCM syndrome as a model for tardive dyskinesia (TD) in humans is unclear. This is due, in part, to inconsistencies between studies. Methods for rating VCMs have varied markedly and could account for the inconsistencies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the importance of the different methods on VCM scores. The effects of habituation and length of rating sessions were examined in rats habituated for 2 min, 1 h, or several hours over 4 days, compared to unhabitua

To investigate the effects of stress on c-fos mRNA expression, rats were submitted to forced immobilization for 15, 30, 60 or 120 min before sacrifice. In situ hybridization was performed on sections containing the dorsal hippocampus with a 32P-labelled 50-base oligonucleotide probe (10(7)-10(9) cpm/micrograms) complementary to nucleotides 370-319 of rat c-fos. Forced restraint induced a time-dependent increase in c-fos mRNA expression which was most pronounced in the dentate gyrus and CA1-CA3 regions of the hippocampal formation, and which peaked after 30 min of immobilization (72.7 +/- 1.0 v

The pathogenesis of linear ulceration induced by restraint water-immersion (RWI) was investigated in view of gastric motility and early ischemic changes. After three hours of restraint-water immersion stress, the cross-sectioned gastric body was prepared for light microscopy. Most lesions (90.8%) were present in the mucosal folds projecting toward the cavity. Wedge-shaped degeneration in the crest of the folds was recognized as an ischemic lesion followed by hemorrhagic ulceration. Compressed arterioles were frequently encountered in the muscularis mucosae and circular muscle. Generally, mucos

A new peptide, eel calcitonin (eCT), synthesized to the sequence of calcitonin (CT) extracted from the ultimo branchial bodies of eels, is now on the market in some countries for clinical use in the treatment of Paget's disease of bone and in the prophylaxis or treatment of certain osteoporoses. We have now studied the effect of eCT on the inhibition of gastric acid secretion and protection against experimentally induced gastric ulcers in rats as other CTs have previously been shown to have such effects. EelCT shows a dose dependent inhibition of gastric acid secretion, both volume and concent

The effects of various acute stressors on the activity of adult male rats in a holeboard and in the forced swim test were studied. When tested immediately or 24 h after 1 h exposure to noise, restraint in tubes or tail shock, no changes in either defecation rate or activity in the holeboard were observed. In contrast, immediately after 1 h immobilization in wood-boards, a reduction of the number of areas crossed and the number of head-dips was found. The inhibitory effect of immobilization on head-dips persisted 24 h later. The behavior of the rats in the forced swim test was classified into t

Bilateral intra-amygdalar (i/am) microinjections of TRH (1 and 10 micrograms) and physostigmine (10 micrograms) into the central nucleus (CEA) aggravated cold restraint stress (3 hr at 4 degrees C) induced gastric ulcer formation in rats, whereas atropine (1, 5 and 10 micrograms) attenuated this phenomenon. Similar stress ulcer reducing effects were seen with chlordiazepoxide (CDP, 10 mg/kg, IP) and midazolam (1, 3 and 10 micrograms, i/am). Pretreatment of rats with atropine or CDP antagonized the ulcerogenic effects of both TRH and physostigmine. Further, when administered intra-CEA, midazola

The effect of 2-(4-methylaminobtoxy)diphenylmethane hydrochloride (MCI-2016) on the development of ulcers and on gastric secretion were examined in comparison with imipramine and amitriptyline. In various experimental ulcer models (Shay, water-immersion restraint, cold stress, swimming stress and reserpine ulcers), MCI-2016, at the doses ranging from 6.25 to 100 mg/kg p.o., exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of ulceration with high therapeutic index. MCI-2016 showed little influence on the spontaneous and stimulated gastric secretion at the doses effectively suppressing the ulcer formation.

Automobile accidents are the most frequent cause of injury and death among young children. The number of injuries or deaths could be decreased by the use of child restraints. Counseling parents about car safety has a positive effect on increasing the use of restraints. Other important factors include passive protection, such as interior design and air bags, appropriate laws for enforcement of proper use and adequate safety testing of existing restraints.

Guidance during transformation is a recurring theme in literature and medicine. In Divine Comedy, Virgil successfully guides Dante through suffering toward understanding, whereas in Moby-Dick, Starbuck recognizes Captain Ahab's destructive obsession but fails to prevent catastrophe. This conceptual humanities analysis examines these contrasting literary figures through the perspective of plastic surgery ethics and explores their relevance to reconstructive and aesthetic practice. The literary roles of Virgil and Starbuck were comparatively interpreted using narrative and conceptual analysis. T

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders (EDs) are individually debilitating and highly comorbid conditions. Childhood abuse is a prominent risk factor for PTSD and ED symptoms both individually and as a comorbid syndrome (PTSD-ED). There may be a functional association between comorbid PTSD-ED symptoms whereby disordered eating behaviors are used to avoid trauma-related thoughts and feelings. The current study used a network analytic approach to examine key associations between PTSD and ED symptom subscales (i.e., PCL-5 and EPSI, respectively) in a community sample of 120 adu

BACKGROUND: Silymarin is a polyphenolic flavanoid of Silybum marianum, elicited neuroprotection and antidepressant like activity in stressed model. It was found to increase 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) levels in the cortex and dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) in the cerebellum in normal mice. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential antidepressant-like activity of silymarin in the acute restraint stress (ARS) in mice.
METHODS: The ARS was induced by immobilizing the mice for a period of 7h using rodent restraint device preventing them for any physical movement. One hou

Recently, the bidirectional connection between the gastrointestinal microbiota and the brain has gained interest in many research studies. Findings have highlighted the potential role of stress and sex hormones in modulating the gut microbiome. To our knowledge, no study has investigated the effect of sex hormone perturbations on the gut microbiota in response to stress. To understand how stress may alter the gut microbiota differently depending on sex, gonadectomized and sham-operated male and female mice were subjected to 2 h of daily restraint stress for seven consecutive days. Body weight

The long-term molecular consequences associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are poorly understood. Our study examined the long-term (up to five months) metabolic consequences of acute and chronic traumatic factors, including physical (2-hour restraint), psychological (predator sound), and social (social isolation) stressors, in C57BL/6 J male mice. In the open field test, mice exposed to all stressors displayed anxiety-like behavior for up to one month. Additionally, predator sound triggered a fear response, monitored as decreased locomotion and increased defecation. Behavioral

It is crucial to develop novel antidepressants. Dexmedetomidine (DEX) can exert antidepressant effects, but its underlying mechanism remains unclear. We used chronic restraint stress (CRS) to induce depression-like behaviour in mice and administered low-dose DEX (2 μg/kg per day) during CRS modelling or one injection of high-dose DEX (20 μg/kg) after CRS. The results of the behavioural tests revealed that both methods ameliorated CRS-induced depression. The brain slices of the mice were subjected to immunohistochemical staining for c-fos and phosphorylated ERK (pERK). Results showed that the c

Psychological stress increases risk of gastrointestinal tract diseases. However, the mechanism behind stress-induced gastrointestinal injury is not well understood. The objective of our study is to elucidate the putative mechanism of stress-induced gastrointestinal injury and develop an intervention strategy. To achieve this, we employed the restraint stress mouse model, a well-established method to study the pathophysiological changes associated with psychological stress in mice. By orally administering gut-nonabsorbable Evans blue dye and monitoring its plasma levels, we were able to track t

Stress is a state that is known to impact an organism's physiological and psychological balance as well as the morphology and functionality of certain brain areas. In the present work, chronic restraint stress (CRS) model rats treated with treadmill exercise were used to examine anomalies associated to emotion and mood as well as molecular changes in the brain. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control, stress, exercise, and stress+exercise groups. CRS were exposed to stress group rats and exercise group underwent a chronic treadmill exercise. Depressive-like behavior was evalua

It is clearly known that psychological stress is an important threat to health in today's modern societies. Recent studies have shown that acute stress causes an increase in positive social behaviours such as prosocial behaviour and devotion which are components of empathic behaviour. Neuropsychiatric manifestations such as anxiety and depression may affect empathic behaviour. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic restraint stress on empathy-like behaviour and the histopathological changes in the amygdala, prefrontal cortex in the adrenal glands and thymus, as well as
