Animal studies have indicated that volume resuscitation is successful with salt-containing crystalloid solutions as well as colloid solutions. Hyperosmolar salt solutions appear to have benefits over isosmolar solutions. Both, however, produce hypoproteinemia, which can lead to edema formation due to changes in the transcapillary oncotic gradient and possibly by changing the interstitial matrix. The lung appears to be much more resistant to edema formation than the soft tissues. Except for the dog, the lung does not appear to be significantly altered from shock with no substantial increase in …

Most frequent complications of infusion therapy in children include thrombosis and thrombophlebitis of the umbilical and subclavian veins. In the perinatal period thrombophlebitis of the umbilical vein is due to exogenous infection and becomes the source of umbilical sepsis. Thrombophlebitis of the subclavian vein in nurslings results more frequently from endogenous infection. Because of morpho-functional immaturity in infancy, hyperhydration of tissues is extreme, with vacuolar dystrophy of cells up to their necrosis, particularly in the liver and kidneys. Artificial pulmonary ventilation (AP

For the physician treating an injured patient, it is important to recognize fracture of the cervical spine without neck pain. Films of the cervical spine in patients with head or facial trauma, or patients who are unconscious, inebriated, or have multiple injuries, should be routine and are best obtained by portable technic in the emergency room before procedures requiring or resulting in cervical manipulation. The cost of cervical spine injury may be great for the patient, society, and the physician who fails to recognize it.

The effectiveness of artificial circulation by the method of Bryukhonenko and his colleagues in the resuscitation of dogs that had died from drowning in fresh- or salt-water was studied. Eight out of ten dogs were revived after freshwater drowning 'death' lasting from 10.5 to 21 min, when a variant of the artificial circulation method, dog donor with a venous pump of the artificial heart, was used. Resuscitated dogs remained alive from 3 to 72 h and died from pulmonary oedema. Artificial circulation appeared to be more effective in resuscitation of dogs drowned in saltwater. Their clinical 'de…

This commentary discusses the provision of cardiopulmonary resuscitation to casualties in a diving bell. This single resource consolidates recent advances in the field, published in different medical journals, to support dissemination across the wider diving industry. It summarises the evaluation of techniques for the provision of manual cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to a seated casualty, including head-to-chest, knee-to-chest, and prone knee-to-chest compression delivery, and concludes that the only safe and potentially effective approach in a diving bell setting without room for a supi…

INTRODUCTION: Emergency resuscitative thoracotomy (ERT) is a resource-intensive procedure that can deplete a combat surgical team's supply and divert attention from casualties with more survivable injuries. An understanding of survival after ERT in the combat trauma population will inform surgical decision-making.
METHODS: We requested all encounters from 2007 to 2023 from the Department of Defense Trauma Registry (DoDTR). We analysed any documented thoracotomy in the emergency department and excluded any case for which it was not possible to distinguish ERT from operating room thoracotomy. T
