Therapeutic management of idiopathic recurrent serositis: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic recurrent serositis (IRS) is the most frequent serositis encountered in real-life medical sceneries, and its management represents a therapeutic challenge. There are few epidemiologic data related to IRS, though most studies have focused on recurrent pericarditis, revealing that 70% of all forms of pericarditis are idiopathic and caused by innate immunity abnormalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate outcome and recurrence rates of patients with IRS, assessing management modalities used in our Periodic Fever Centre of the Gemelli Hospital, Rome, Italy, in compariso

Causes of Mortality and Disease in Rabbits and Hares: A Retrospective Study.

In this study we determined the causes of mortality and disease in a total of 325 lagomorphs (rabbits and hares) in northern Spain between 2000 and 2018. Risk factors such as the species, age, sex, time of year and origin were also considered. Clinical signs, gross and histopathological findings and ancillary test results were the basis for the final diagnoses that were reviewed to classify and identify the different disorders. A total of 26 different conditions were identified. A single cause of death or illness was detected in 267 animals. They were grouped into parasitic conditions (n= 65;

Thromboembolism in children with cancer: a retrospective multicenter study in Korea.

Thromboembolism (TE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in adult cancer patients; however, there is a lack of sufficient knowledge on TE in pediatric cancer patients. We aimed to determine the epidemiology of TE in Korean children with cancer. Between January 2000 and July 2015, we retrospectively analyzed pediatric patients newly diagnosed with cancer at six tertiary hospitals in Korea. Of 3611 children with cancer, 33 (0.91%) had TE. A higher number of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (n = 13), brain tumors (n = 6), lymphoma (n = 4), and bone/soft tissue sarcomas (n = 5) t

Cutaneous sequelae in neonatal lupus: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous eruptions in neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) are thought to be self-resolving. Limited literature suggests cutaneous changes may persist. OBJECTIVE: To characterize cutaneous residua in NLE and identify predictors for their development. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients with cutaneous NLE born between January 1980 and May 2017 was performed. Primary outcome was the proportion of patients with cutaneous residua. Secondary outcomes included associations/predictors of sequelae. RESULTS: At the last follow-up, at a mean age of 4 years (range, 0.5-18.7 ye

Nonremission and Recurrent Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia: A Retrospective Study.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome. It is curable by excision of the causative tumor. However, a few cases may persist or relapse after tumor resection. We aimed to investigate the rate of these events and related factors. We retrospectively studied TIO patients treated with surgery in a tertiary hospital. TIO was established based on a pathologic examination or the reversion of hypophosphatemia. Refractory TIO patients consisted of those with nonremission or recurrent hypophosphatemia after surgery. A total of 230 patients were confirmed as having TIO. After pr

A retrospective cohort study on reasons to retain third molars.

The primary goal of this study was to identify and quantify indications for retaining third molars. This retrospective cohort study included 1682 patients (818 male, 864 female; mean age 31 years) who were referred to the University Hospitals Leuven for third molar removal. Eight reasons for retaining the third molars were identified: (1) risk of damaging adjacent structures, (2) compromised health status, (3) adequate space for eruption, (4) third molar serves as abutment tooth, (5) orthodontic reasons, (6) eruption into proper occlusion, (7) symptomless third molars in patients >30 years old

Facial Fractures in Young Adults: A National Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: "Young adulthood" is a term used to define individuals falling within the 18- to 22-year-old age range. Injuries account for more than a third of emergency department visits in this population. A particular area of concern is accidents that lead to injuries of the facial bones because they can have long-term functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial impacts. As many as 30 million young adults participate in some sort of sport in the United States per year, and facial injuries from these activities are not uncommon and thus require further exploration. METHODS: The National Electroni

Recurrence risk of preterm births: a retrospective Indian study.

Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of neonatal deaths and India is the biggest contributor to the global burden of PTBs. This study aimed to determine the risk of recurrence of PTBs and factors associated with recurrence among mothers delivered at a tertiary care perinatal centre in India. This retrospective study comprised women who had delivered singleton preterm babies (24-37 weeks of gestation and weighing ≥500 g) in 2009 and 2010, and had subsequent deliveries beyond 24 weeks of gestation by the end of March 2016. Preterm births were stratified as spontaneous and those with an indic
