100 cases of breast carcinoma were studied with lectin affinitive histochemistry technology. The result showed that Ricinus comunis agglutinin (RCA1) was located in almost all intraductal carcinomas but one, while the positive rates in the other types were obviously low (P less than 0.05). We report the presence of Ixodes inopinatus and its sympatric occurrence with Ixodes ricinus in southeastern Germany, western Austria, and Romania. The identification of I. inopinatus was based on morphological and molecular 16S rRNA and 12S rRNA gene features. We also report the finding of Rickettsia monacensis and Rickettsia helvetica in I. inopinatus collected from a fox and a sheep in Romania. Although the vector competence of I. inopinatus for these pathogens remains to be proven, there is evidence of transstadial persistence, an important prerequisite for acting as a vector.

This paper describes a case of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection in a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) calf in Norway. The calf was found deserted, paretic, and heavily infested with Ixodes ricinus ticks. It was euthanized and investigated postmortem. Anaplasma phagocytophilum was detected in several tissues by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 16S rRNA sequence analyses. Analyses for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus infections were negative. This is the first report of a possible paretic condition in A. phagocytophilum infected roe deer.

Human babesiosis is caused predominantly by B. microti and B. divergens, a protozooan parasites of red blood cells. Both are transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks, also the primary vector of Lyme disease. Clinical manifestation varied widely from asymptomatic infection to a serve rapidly fatal disease. The diagnosis of babesiosis include examination of stained blood smers, serological evaluation indirect antibody tests and PCR. With the evolution PCR--based techniques, the diagnosis and monitoring of babesial infections became more sensitive and reliable.

About a hundred of patients with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) were recorded over the latest decade in the Crimea, and 60 TBE virus strains were isolated from the ticks collected on the peninsula. The results of studies carried out in 1986-1990 helped define the borders of 4 local natural foci of TBE, study their acarifauna, detect the principal TBE vector--Ixodes ricinus (with a mean virophority of 0.6%), and distinguish two foci with a combination of TBE and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

An infection presumed to have been transmitted by raw cow's milk was reported in Southern Styria (Remschnig locality), furthermore an FSME infection was demonstrated in two patients as having been transmitted by raw goat's milk. Both patients (an elderly couple) had no left their house or garden and had nourished themselves mainly with goat's milk. Neither patient had evidence of tick bites. The goats were severely parasitized with Ixodes ricinus; the place of dwelling lies in an FSME-natural foci region.
