[Merycism : when humain being starts ruminating].

Merycism is a rare and little-known functional gastrointestinal disorder. Indeed, the diagnosis is made, on average, with a delay of 21 to 77 months. This delay can lead to dramatic consequences for the patient such as significant weight loss, ionic imbalance and social isolation. Through a clinical situation, we evoke the difficulties and the particularities of the diagnosis of merycism as well as its management, in a situation evoking a disorder of the eating habits. This pathology can be found in various specialties such as general medicine, pediatrics, gastroenterology, endocrinology, dent

Diagnosis and Treatment of Rumination Syndrome: A Critical Review.

Rumination syndrome (RS) is characterized by the repeated regurgitation of material during or soon after eating with the subsequent rechewing, reswallowing, or spitting out of the regurgitated material. Rumination syndrome is classified as both a "Functional Gastroduodenal Disorder" (by the Rome Foundation's Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction, 4th edition) and a "Feeding and Eating Disorder" (by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition). Rumination syndrome is a disorder that is often inaccurately diagnosed or missed, resulti

Role of rumination in the relationship between metacognition and shyness.

AIM: To explore the association between metacognitive beliefs, rumination and shyness in a non-clinical sample of adults. METHODS: One hundred and three healthy subjects from the general population were enrolled in the study. Shyness was evaluated using the Revised Cheek and Buss Shyness Scale, rumination was assessed using the Ruminative Response Scale, metacognition was evaluated using the Meta-Cognitions Questionnaire 30, and anxiety levels were measured using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory form Y. Correlation analyses, mediation models and 95% bias-corrected and accelerated (BCaCI) boo

Rumination and eating disorder psychopathology: A meta-analysis.

Rumination is a cognitive process involving repetitive thoughts about negative experiences and emotions and is associated with psychopathology. Rumination has been implicated in mood and anxiety disorders, and there is a growing body of research on rumination in relation to eating disorder (ED) psychopathology. The current meta-analytic review focused on the literature addressing rumination and ED psychopathology. A comprehensive search process identified 38 studies, which primarily used cross-sectional designs with non-clinical samples. Results demonstrated that rumination was concurrently (r

Eating and rumination behaviour in cows with traumatic reticuloperitonitis.

Eating and rumination behaviour in 22 cows with traumatic reticuloperitonitis was recorded after the start of treatment. Based on the results of clinical, ultrasonographic and radiographic examinations, the cows were divided into two groups: Group A consisted of 12 cows without an intramural or perforating foreign body and group B had 10 cows with an intramural or perforating foreign body. Cows of group A received amoxicillin, flunixin meglumine and a NaCl-glucose infusion, and cows of group B received the same treatment accompanied by foreign body removal via ruminotomy. All cows were fitted

Orofacial electromyographic correlates of induced verbal rumination.

Rumination is predominantly experienced in the form of repetitive verbal thoughts. Verbal rumination is a particular case of inner speech. According to the Motor Simulation view, inner speech is a kind of motor action, recruiting the speech motor system. In this framework, we predicted an increase in speech muscle activity during rumination as compared to rest. We also predicted increased forehead activity, associated with anxiety during rumination. We measured electromyographic activity over the orbicularis oris superior and inferior, frontalis and flexor carpi radialis muscles. Results showe

Overarousal as a mechanism of the relation between rumination and suicidality.

Rumination, particularly brooding, is associated with suicidal ideation and attempts; however, mechanisms of these associations have not been identified. The present study examined manifestations of overarousal-agitation, insomnia, and nightmares-that have been linked to both rumination and suicide as indirect indicators of the link between brooding and suicidal ideation/attempts. A sample of 492 psychiatric outpatients (64.2% female), aged 17-65 years (M = 26.75, SD = 10.32), completed self-report measures before their intake appointments with a therapist. Results indicated that agitation and

Rumination and behavioural factors in Parkinson's disease depression.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease is associated with high rates of depression. There is growing interest in non-pharmacological management including psychological approaches such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. To date, little research has investigated whether processes that underpin cognitive models of depression, on which such treatment is based, apply in patients with Parkinson's disease. The study aimed to investigate the contribution of core psychological factors to the presence and degree of depressive symptoms. METHODS: 104 participants completed questionnaires measuring mood, motor disab

Development and Validation of a Measure of Self-Critical Rumination.

Self-criticism is a form of negative self-evaluation that has strong associations with many forms of psychopathology. Rumination is a maladaptive form of repetitive thinking that is associated with many psychological disorders. Although measures of several different types of rumination (e.g., general rumination, depressive rumination, anger rumination) have been developed, none focuses specifically on self-critical rumination. An initial pool of items addressing self-critical rumination was developed by adapting items from existing rumination measures and through a writing task administered to

Rumination: Cognitive consequences of training to inhibit the negative.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To explore cognitive factors in ruminative thinking, we assessed the effect of a single-session of inhibition training on subsequent biases in attention and interpretation. METHODS: We randomly assigned participants to either inhibit or attend to negative stimuli. Inhibition was assessed by using assessment trials embedded throughout the training, and interpretation bias was assessed following the training. RESULTS: Trait rumination moderated training effects on both measures. Low ruminators in the inhibition-training condition maintained their level of inhibition

[Rumination and cognitive fusion in dementia family caregivers].

INTRODUCTION: Rumination has been described as a dysfunctional coping strategy related to emotional distress. Recently, it has been highlighted from the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy therapeutic approach, the negative role that cognitive fusion (the extent to which we are psychologically tangled with and dominated by the form or content of our thoughts) has on the explanation of distress. The aim of this study is to simultaneously analyze the role of rumination and cognitive fusion in the caregiving stress process. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample of 176 dementia caregivers was divided in

[The effects of self-anger on rumination and on mental health].

This study investigated the effects of self-anger on rumination and mental health (depression and anxiety). In study 1, a scale to measure self-anger was developed by the review of previous studies and survey interviews. Exploratory factor analysis identified one factor of self-anger. The reliability and validity of the scale were confirmed by internal consistency measures and correlations with other anger-related scales. In study 2, which used the self-anger scale developed in study 1, undergraduate and graduate students completed a set of scales to measure self-anger, rumination, depression,

Adaptive modes of rumination: the role of subjective anger.

Rumination has been demonstrated to have negative consequences on affect, behaviour, and physiological markers. Recent studies, however, suggest that distinct "modes" of anger-associated rumination may lead to several positive consequences. Previous research primarily used recall procedures of anger episodes to elicit anger. By contrast, the present study focused on the effect of subjective anger on the process of rumination and tested its effects in a "staged" social interaction where a confederate provoked participants. Subsequently, participants engaged in rumination about the anger-eliciti

Emphysematous Eosinophilic Lymphangitis in the Ruminal Submucosa of Cattle.

Twenty cattle (14 Holstein-Friesian, 3 Japanese Black, 3 Aberdeen Angus) ranging in age from 3 months to 8 years exhibited, at slaughter, emphysematous thickening of the ruminal submucosa owing to the appearance of numerous, contiguous, small gas bubbles. Microscopic changes in the ruminal submucosa consisted of (1) multiple cystic (emphysematous) lymphangiectasis that was frequently lined or occluded by granulomatous inflammatory infiltrates including macrophages, multinucleate giant cells, and eosinophils; (2) intralymphatic phagocytosis by macrophages and giant cells of eosinophils that sho

Cognitive Control and Rumination in Youth: The Importance of Emotion.

Rumination involves the tendency to passively dwell on negative emotions along with their meanings and consequences. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema demonstrated the role of rumination in the development of several forms of psychopathology and suggested that cognitive control may be one factor that makes some individuals more prone to ruminate than others. Studies with adults have consistently found that rumination is associated with cognitive control difficulties, especially related to switching and inhibiting emotional information. Because rumination predicts psychopathology by adolescence, the present

Preventing worry and rumination by induced positive emotion.

BACKGROUND: Thus study aimed to test the hypothesis that positive emotion can quell or undo the lingering worry and rumination following induced negative emotion. METHODS: 32 female students in grade 1 of high school were randomly recruited and assigned in two experimental and control groups. They completed questionnaires in a pretest that are listed herewith: (1) Rumination questionnaire; (2) Two scales of the big five factorial questionnaire (extraversion - introversion; (3) MMPI(2); (4) Penn-state worry questionnaire. Then for the first group a sad movie, for the second group a cheerful mo

The effect of trait rumination on adaptation to repeated stress.

OBJECTIVE: Exaggerated and prolonged cardiovascular responses to mental stress have been implicated in the etiology of hypertension. Rumination may play a role in the maintenance or reactivation of cardiovascular responses to mental stress and prevent cardiovascular adaptation or create sensitization on reexposure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of trait rumination on patterns of cardiovascular response adaptation after repeated exposure to a mental stressor. METHODS: Cardiovascular data were collected from 82 undergraduate women during a baseline period and during a

Assessing the relationship between rumination and cortisol: a review.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: For individuals who ruminate, or mentally rehearse past stressful events, the physiological effects of a stressor may be longer lasting. This is well-supported within the cardiovascular domain. In the context of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and cortisol, the results are inconsistent. This review summarizes key theoretical and methodological issues that contribute to these mixed findings among the 15 studies to date that have examined the association between rumination and cortisol. RESULTS: State measures of rumination were consistently linked to increa

Rumination in bipolar disorder: evidence for an unquiet mind.

Depression in bipolar disorder has long been thought to be a state characterized by mental inactivity. However, recent research demonstrates that patients with bipolar disorder engage in rumination, a form of self-focused repetitive cognitive activity, in depressed as well as in manic states. While rumination has long been associated with depressed states in major depressive disorder, the finding that patients with bipolar disorder ruminate in manic states is unique to bipolar disorder and challenges explanations put forward for why people ruminate. We review the research on rumination in bipo

Evaluation of a system for monitoring rumination in heifers and calves.

The Hi-Tag electronic rumination-monitoring system (SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel), based on capturing audio recordings, provides a reasonable measure of rumination time in dairy cows, but has not been validated for milk-fed or weaned heifers. The objective of this study was to validate the Hi-Tag rumination-monitoring system in heifers and calves and to assess whether suckling from a teat interfered with recording from this system. Assessments of 2 independent observers were highly correlated (r=0.99, n=20), indicating that direct visual observations provide a useful standard. Measures
