The Influence of Alcohol on Rumination and Metacognitions in Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Comorbidity between major depressive disorder (MDD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly prevalent but reasons for this association are unclear. Rumination may activate metacognitive beliefs that contribute to the development and maintenance of rumination and depression. Negative metacognitions can further lead to other dysfunctional coping strategies (i.e., consumption of alcohol). We examined whether alcohol reduces (state) metacognitions, rumination and other disorder-specific processes in a group of individuals suffering from MDD. METHOD: In an experiment wi

Why is rumination unhelpful in adolescents? Two studies examining the causal role of abstract processing.

Rumination is a common feature of depression in adolescents and adults and it is implicated in the maintenance of depression symptoms. In adults, the maladaptive consequences of rumination have been attributed to the abstract processing mode that characterises this thinking style. The question of whether the same is true in adolescents remains unanswered. Here we describe two experimental studies in which adolescents were trained to think in a mode either characteristic of or inconsistent with the abstract processing style observed in depressive rumination, and the effect on social problem-sol

Being stuck on negatives isn't equally bad: A cross-cultural Bayesian meta-analysis of rumination and its relation to depression.

BACKGROUND: Our understanding of rumination, an emotion regulation strategy that plays a critical role in depression, is limited in its cultural generalisability. Recent cross-cultural studies suggest that higher levels of rumination may not entail the same degree of depression between Eastern dialectical and Western analytical thinkers. This study aims to clarify this by quantitatively summarising existing literature to test whether the level of rumination and its relation to depression differ across these two cultures. METHODS: A robust Bayesian meta-analysis was conducted to compare cultur

Association between rumination, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in persons with depressive and other mood disorders and healthy controls: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Suicidal ideation and behaviors are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Approximately 90 % of suicide completers have a diagnosable mood disorder. Extant literature reports rumination mediates functional impairment across mood disorders. Herein, we report the association between rumination and suicidality amongst persons with psychiatric disorders and healthy controls. METHODS: Our systematic review and meta-analysis included relevant articles retrieved from Web of Science, OVID and PubMed from inception to March 20, 2024. Random effects model was used to calculate the corr

Association of Rumination and Metacognition with Posttraumatic Growth in Parents of Children with Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to examine the association of rumination, metacognition, and posttraumatic with growth in parents of children diagnosed with cancer. DATA SOURCES: The study adopted a descriptive correlational design, and participants (N = 103) were parents of children with cancer. The study was conducted online through the social media platforms of three cancer associations. Data were collected using the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30, the Event Related Rumination Inventory, and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. CONCLUSION: The findings revealed a positi

Factors Associated with Attrition from Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in Patients with a History of Suicidal Depression.

We report data from a randomised controlled trial of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to pilot procedures for people with a history of suicidal ideation or behaviour, focusing in particular on the variables that distinguish those who complete an adequate 'dose' of treatment, from those who drop out. Sixty-eight participants were randomised to either immediate treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) (n = 33) or to the waitlist (n = 36) arm of the trial. In addition to collecting demographic and clinical information, we assessed participants' cognitive reactivity using the m

More Than Causes: Unveiling Bidirectional Relationships Between Maladaptive Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies and Internalizing Problems in Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (MCERSs) have been generally conceptualized as causes of adolescent internalizing problems. This conceptualization was dominant in both theoretical frameworks and practical applications. However, it may not fully capture the complex relationships between MCERSs and internalizing problems. In this study, we challenge this assumption and propose an alternative perspective: MCERSs are not just causes of internalizing problems but also emerge as outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a two-wave longitudinal survey (N = 892; 487 girls, 405

State and trait cognitions differentially affect cyclicity of mood and cortisol in individuals with and without premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is characterized by a cyclical symptom course. Previous research provides limited findings on possible menstrual-cycle-related psychological and psychoendocrinological processes in PMDD. By using ambulatory assessment (AA), we aimed to compare mood and cortisol cyclicity in individuals with PMDD and healthy controls (HC), and to assess effects of habitual and momentary repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and present moment awareness (PMA) on mood and cortisol across the cycle in both groups. Individuals with PMDD and HC (n = 60 each) completed baseline que

Repetitive thinking, executive functioning, and depressive mood in the elderly.

OBJECTIVES: Previous findings and the depressive-executive dysfunction hypothesis suggest that the established association between executive functioning and depression is accounted for by repetitive thinking. Investigating the association between executive functioning, repetitive thinking, and depressive mood, the present study empirically tested this mediational model in a sample of older adults, while focusing on both concrete and abstract repetitive thinking. This latter distinction is important given the potential protective role of concrete repetitive thinking, in contrast to the depletiv

"If only…": Counterfactual  thinking in bereavement.

When grief over the death of a loved one becomes complicated, protracted and circular, ruminative counterfactual thinking in which the bereaved relentlessly but vainly seeks to somehow reverse the tragedy of the loss often plays a contributory role in sustaining the person's suffering. In this article we summarize the growing evidence implicating this cognitive process in interfering with meaning reconstruction following loss, and identify four foci for counterfactual, "if only" cognition, directed at the self, the deceased, relevant others, or the circumstances of the death itself. We then il

Connectome-based modeling reveals a resting-state functional network that mediates the relationship between social rejection and rumination.

BACKGROUND: Rumination impedes problem solving and is one of the most important factors in the onset and maintenance of multiple psychiatric disorders. The current study aims to investigate the impact of social rejection on rumination and explore the underlying neural mechanisms involved in this process. METHODS: We utilized psychological questionnaire and resting-state brain imaging data from a sample of 560 individuals. The predictive model for rumination scores was constructed using resting-state functional connectivity data through connectome-based predictive modeling. Additionally, a med

Cognitive coping and depressive symptoms in definitive infertility: a prospective study.

The objective of the present study was to examine the relationships between infertility characteristics, cognitive coping strategies, and depressive symptoms in definitive involuntarily childless people. Both cross-sectional and prospective relationships were studied in a sample of 169 persons for whom an involuntarily childless future was definitive. The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) and the Symptom Check List (SCL-90) were filled out at home. Almost no infertility characteristics were related to depressive symptoms. The cognitive coping strategies self-blame, rumination,

Perseverative Cognition and Health Behaviors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Recent developments in stress theory have emphasized the significance of perseverative cognition (worry and rumination) in furthering our understanding of stress-disease relationships. Substantial evidence has shown that perseverative cognition (PC) is associated with somatic outcomes and numerous physiological concomitants have been identified (i.e., cardiovascular, autonomic, and endocrine nervous system activity parameters). However, there has been no synthesis of the evidence regarding the association between PC and health behaviors. This is important given such behaviors may also directly

Cognitive, behavioral, and autonomic correlates of mind wandering and perseverative cognition in major depression.

Autonomic dysregulation has been hypothesized to play a role in the relationships between psychopathology and cardiovascular risk. An important transdiagnostic factor that has been associated with autonomic dysfunction is perseverative cognition (PC), mainly present in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in the form of rumination. As the ability to adaptively let our mind wander without ruminating is critical to mental health, this study aimed to examine the autonomic concomitants of functional vs. dysfunctional intrusive thoughts in MDD. Ambulatory heart rate (HR) and variability (HRV) of 18 MDD

Should nonsuicidal self-injury be a putative obsessive-compulsive-related condition? A critical appraisal.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has many behavioral and cognitive features that would make it appear to be closely tied to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Obsessive-compulsive-related disorders (OCRDs) have been described in the literature as conditions that share a common phenomenology, neurobiology, and treatment response. The authors reviewed the literature describing the degree that NSSI is similar to, and distinct from, OCRDs based on these hypothesized common areas. They conclude with recommendations for conceptualization that draws partly from the OCRD literature and from cognitive-

Effects of modifying interpretation bias on transdiagnostic repetitive negative thinking.

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT; e.g., worry and rumination) is common across emotional disorders, as is the tendency to generate negative interpretations (interpretation bias). Ameliorating negative interpretations via cognitive bias modification of interpretations (CBM-I) reduces worry/rumination, and improves mood in people diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or depression. We investigated whether these findings generalize to high worry or rumination populations, irrespective of diagnosis, and whether effects are increased by enhancing emotional engagement with tr

Development and validation of experimental induction tasks for worry and rumination: A comparison of personalized and scripted approaches.

BACKGROUND: Worry and rumination are two forms of repetitive negative thinking. Whereas prior research has highlighted both their distinct and overlapping characteristics, the experimental induction of these states provides a valuable means of investigating their mechanisms. Two induction methods have been used: personalized based on self-relevant content, and scripted using standardized prompts. However, no studies have directly compared these methods, and it remains unclear whether they elicit equally pronounced responses. Additionally, the moderating role of symptom profiles, such as elevat

Neural mechanisms of rumination subtypes in adolescent major depressive disorder based on large-scale brain network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD) is rising. Rumination, a core cognitive factor in its onset and maintenance, divides into adaptive reflective and maladaptive brooding subtypes. Brooding exacerbates symptoms and predicts future episodes, suggesting distinct neural bases. Given adolescents' critical brain development, exploring brain network-rumination subtype links deepens MDD neural understanding and informs subtype-specific interventions. This study uses resting-state EEG to investigate large-scale network characteristics in adolescent MDD and their s
