The present paper aims to highlight the importance of Mobile Mental Health Units (MMHUs) in the delivery of mental health services in remote areas in rural Greece. Since the foundation of the first MMHUs in the eighties till nowadays, those services have expanded in many rural areas and there is some evidence that they are effective in the management of patients with severe mental disorders. The care of those patients seems to contribute to a significant reduction in voluntary and involuntary acute admissions and in length of hospital stay. Cost/effectiveness analysis studies have also shown f

OBJECTIVE: A pervasive link between relative deprivation and health has been well-documented. However, prior studies suffered from inadequate relative deprivation measures that fail to define appropriate reference groups to which individuals compare themselves, and few provided longitudinal evidence. This study explores latent relative deprivation patterns based on multiple social and geographic reference groups, examining their impacts on health trajectories and variations by gender and urban-rural areas.
METHODS: Using three waves (2013, 2015, & 2018) of the China Health and Retirement Long

In India, Rajasthan is the largest state and has seven divisions, namely Ajmer, Bharatpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Udaipur. Villagers of these regions, generally, used groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes. The basic sources of groundwater in rural areas are hand pumps, step wells and borewells. Water of most of these sources is contaminated with fluoride (F) with varying amounts. Water of > 60% these sources has F beyond the recommended country standard (1.0 or 1.5 ppm) especially in tribal rural areas of Rajasthan. The highest F range, 0.1-34.0 ppm, has been found in gr

BACKGROUND: The control of malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhoea is important for the reduction in morbidity and mortality among children under 5 years. Uganda has adopted the Integrated Community Case Management strategy using Community Health Workers (CHWs) to address this challenge. The extent and trend of these three conditions managed by the CHWs are not well documented. This study was done to describe the epidemiology and trends of the three common illnesses treated by the CHWs in Bugoye Sub-County in rural Uganda.
METHODS: A retrospective review of monthly morbidity data for children less

BACKGROUND: Thyroid disorders are one of the most common endocrine disorders seen globally. Diagnostic challenge may arise both clinically and biochemically because of the multiple function of thyroid hormones (THs). Request for thyroid function test (TFT s) may be based on clinical impression that may suggest thyroid dysfunction or obvious symptoms and signs that are diagnostic of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study looks at the biochemical patterns of TFTs and the clinical impression of thyroid disorders in a rural tertiary institution. Informa

Male involvement in antenatal care has been shown to improve health outcomes for women and infants. However, little is known about how best to encourage male partners to support essential perinatal health activities. We explored men's perceptions of facilitators and barriers to involvement in antenatal care and HIV prevention including fears, hopes and challenges. Forty in-depth interviews were conducted with the male partners of HIV-positive and HIV-negative pregnant women in southwest Kenya. Most male partners believed engaging in pregnancy health-related activities was beneficial for keepin

Complications of childbirth and pregnancy are leading causes of death among women of reproductive age. Developing countries account for 99% of maternal deaths. The aim of this study was to explore levels, causes and risk factors associated with maternal mortality in rural Tanzania. Longitudinal data (2002-2006) from Rufiji HDSS was used where a total of 26 427 women aged 15-49 years were included in the study; 64 died and there were 15 548 live births. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to assess the risk factors associated with maternal deaths. MMR was 412 per 100 000 live births. T
