OBJECTIVE: 'Ego dissolution' refers to a temporary state characterized by diminished self-referential processing, which leads to a breakdown of personal boundaries and an enhanced sense of unity with the environment. Both psychedelics, such as ayahuasca, and contemplative practices, like meditation, have been proposed as mechanisms for modulating the ego. While ayahuasca induces transient self-perception alterations, meditation promotes more sustained changes through cognitive and emotional regulation. This study examines whether ayahuasca consumption modulates the ego and compares its effects

BACKGROUND: According to self-motivation theories and the mnemic neglect mechanism, differences in self-esteem levels lead to memory bias for social feedback of different valences, and may enable self-esteem to moderate individuals' directed forgetting of social feedback. However, this hypothesis has not been tested in previous studies. To address this, the present study employed two behavioral experiments to examine the moderating effect of self-esteem on directed forgetting of social feedback.
METHODS: In Experiment 1, a directed forgetting paradigm involving valenced (positive or negative)

BACKGROUND: Although participation in organised extracurricular activities has been associated with higher self-esteem, high participation frequency may have adverse effects, as proposed by the overscheduling hypothesis. Longitudinal evidence from non-Western countries is limited. We examined whether the frequency of enrichment-oriented out-of-school lessons (naraigoto) in fourth grade was associated with self-esteem in sixth grade in a Japanese large-scale cohort.
METHODS: We analysed longitudinal data from the Japanese Longitudinal Study of Children and Parents from fourth grade (baseline,

Body image development is a critical task of adolescence, necessitating the study of experiences that shape how adolescents perceive their appearance. Video chatting is one such experience, as default self-view settings render an environment in which one's physical appearance is highly salient. Although numerous studies have examined how digital technology use relates to body image, few have examined video chatting, especially longitudinally. Research is also needed examining how self-oriented digital experiences may indirectly relate to mental health via body image concerns. This three-wave l

Lewy body disease (LBD) is characterized by early damage to the insula, a central region of the "self" networks that refer to self-awareness and autobiographical memory. Our work confirms that, from the prodromal stage of LBD, there is a global collapse of the self, characterized by an alteration from the most elementary and the most elaborate components, linked to insular damage.

BACKGROUND: Several facets of substance use self-stigma have been identified, and these constructs may be important within the specific context of alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment. Gaining a better understanding of self-stigma among individuals who are seeking treatment for AUD may help inform treatment approaches and ultimately could improve treatment to help reduce AUD-related self-stigma.
METHODS: We recruited 121 participants (52.9% women, 46.3% men) who were primarily White (84.2%) and not Hispanic identifying (90.0%), with a mean age of 44.4 years (SD = 10.3) from a telehealth AUD t

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is recognized as a primary contributor to psychological distress. Adolescents living in residential youth care (RYC) are a particularly vulnerable group, as their placement often results from repeated maltreatment. Nevertheless, the intermediary processes between maltreatment and psychological distress remain less clear. Previous research has identified the transdiagnostic value of feelings of shame and self-criticism, as well as the connection between childhood maltreatment and these two variables, yet no conceptual model integrating them has been tested.

Language teachers' teaching motivation remains an under-researched area. To address this research gap, this qualitative study explored dynamic changes of English teachers' teaching motivation in a Chinese public high school by utilizing possible selves theory from an ecological perspective, which is a comprehensive approach that highlights teachers' agency, values their unique experiences and their interactions with the spatial-temporal context. The concept of possible selves encompassing three distinct aspects: the actual self reflects current self-perception; the ideal self embodies future a

PURPOSE: Dyslexic students can present complex profiles with associated co-occurrences. One co-occurrence of interest involving dyslexic students is mental health co-occurrences such as anxiety, self-concept difficulties, depression symptoms, and difficulties with peers. While some research has begun to explore the connections between dyslexia and mental health co-occurrences, there has been limited research in potential treatment interventions for students with dyslexia and mental health co-occurrences. The purpose of this narrative review was to identify existing research studies exploring i

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) bears a heavy toll on individuals' psychological wellbeing and quality of life. Despite vital to the development of effective interventions, systematic and quantifiable knowledge on modifiable factors associated with adult SLE adjustment and disease/illness activity is currently lacking. This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to bridge this gap, by examining the effects of modifiable psychological, social, and behavioural factors associated with SLE adjustment and disease/illness activity. Eight databases were searched for quantitative studies, using

OBJECTIVE: Youth with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) experience elevated rates of internalizing symptoms, although more research is required to understand this phenomenon. Perfectionism, a multidimensional personality trait that involves dimensions such as striving for flawlessness (self-oriented perfectionism) and feeling that others demand perfection (socially-prescribed perfectionism), is a well-known risk factor for internalizing symptoms that has received minimal attention in pediatric populations. Preregistered hypotheses explored the relationships between youth and parent perfectio

OBJECTIVE: Negative body image is thought to play an important role in the onset and maintenance of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The intervention Expand Your Horizon (EYH), which is focused on increasing functionality appreciation, is being investigated as a potential approach for improving body image. This study investigated the themes that were identified when adolescent girls with an eating disorder are asked to describe their body functionality within the context of EYH.
METHOD: Fifty-eight girls with an eating disorder received the EYH intervention and wrote about everything the

OBJECTIVES: Although ADHD has its roots in childhood, significant symptoms persist into adulthood for more than half of individuals. Adults with ADHD are heterogeneous in terms of symptom presentations, impairment domains, and relative strengths. Consequently, it is essential to better understand the diverse self-perceptions and experiences of adults with ADHD; qualitative methods are a valuable complement to quantitative work in this area. Our aim is to provide a scoping review of qualitative studies on adults with ADHD to articulate the current status of the field and establish future resear

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic condition increasing among young people. Identity development occurs during an individual's life and can be significantly influenced by a chronic disease such as T1DM. We have critically reviewed the relevant scientific literature to understand young people's identity development with T1DM.
METHODS: A critical review design was employed to answer the research question: "What does scientific literature state regarding identity development in young people living with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus?" Numerous databases were searched to include

BACKGROUND: A varicocele is an abnormal dilation of the pampiniform plexus of veins in the scrotum that commonly affects postpubertal males. The condition has been associated with male infertility, testicular hypotrophy, and pain. However, the clinical experiences of adolescent patients and their families regarding the evaluation, surveillance, and management of varicoceles have not been previously examined.
OBJECTIVE: This study explores the patient's and family's experiences of varicocele diagnosis and subsequent management to better understand the salient factors impacting decision-making

Personal recovery transcends illness and is a unifying human experience. Core elements in personal recovery are hope, meaning, and rebuilding oneself. Here we aim to investigate whether factors associated with personal recovery in patients with non-affective psychosis, unaffected siblings and healthy controls are similar. We investigated the association between personal recovery and resilience, social support, socio-demographic and illness-related variables in 580 patients, 630 siblings, and 351 healthy controls who participated in the Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis (GROUP) study. Fear of negative evaluation (FNE) is a transdiagnostic risk factor that has an important role in eating disorder (ED) onset and maintenance, as well as other psychopathologies. However, no research has explored whether FNE has associations with probable ED status when accounting for related vulnerabilities, and whether this relationship changes across gender and weight status. The current study sought out to explore how FNE explains probable ED status above and beyond heightened neuroticism and low self-esteem, with gender and BMI serving as potential moderators of this relationship. Homework assignments, or specific tasks patients are asked to engage in or complete between sessions, are a controversial topic among psychoanalysts. While many argue these interventions contradict psychoanalytic principles, others believe they can help address problems and promote coping skills. We propose that homework can be a legitimate aspect of relational psychoanalysis when used in a way that is attuned to the patient's experience and that homework may be an important component of treating personality disorders (PD). We present the case of a man diagnosed with narcissistic PD. He often

The quantity and quality of social contacts have been related to self-esteem, and both social relationships and self-esteem have been implicated in the pathways to paranoia. However, how social relationships interplay with self-esteem to trigger paranoia is not well understood. This study aims to investigate whether different measures of social connectedness (social support, loneliness, and desired friendship), as well as the frequency of social contact, impact paranoia and other positive and negative psychotic-like experiences (PLE) through the indirect effect of self-esteem. BACKGROUND: Video feedback is a technique used in cognitive therapy for social anxiety disorder (CT-SAD) to update patients' negative self-perceptions of how they appear to others. Clients are supported to watch video of themselves engaging in social interactions. While typically undertaken in session with a therapist, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of remotely delivered video feedback embedded within an Internet-based cognitive therapy program (iCT-SAD).
METHODS: We examined patients' self-perceptions and social anxiety symptoms before and after video feedback in two rando
