Effect of medical comorbidity on self-assessed pain, function, and general health status after rotator cuff repair.

BACKGROUND: In a previous study, we found that medical comorbidities have a negative effect on preoperative pain, function, and general health status in patients with a chronic rotator cuff tear. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between medical comorbidities and the postoperative outcome of rotator cuff repair. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-five patients were evaluated on the basis of a history (including medical comorbidities) and use of outcome tools preoperatively and at one year after rotator cuff repair. Outcome was evaluated with the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and H

The Behavior Problems Inventory: an instrument for the assessment of self-injury, stereotyped behavior, and aggression/destruction in individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) is a 52-item respondent-based behavior rating instrument for self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive/destructive behavior in mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Items are rated on a frequency scale and a severity scale. The BPI-01 was administered by interviewing direct care staff of 432 randomly selected residents from a developmental center between the ages of 14 to 91 years. For 73% of those selected, at least one problem was endorsed on the BPI-01. A total of 43% showed self-injury, 54% stereotyped behavior, and 38% aggressi

Assessment of the psychometric properties of self-management measurement instruments for individuals with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review protocol.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES: The type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) negatively impacts patients' quality of life, affecting their physical and mental functioning as well as social relationships. Self-management is essential for T2DM control, as it involves self-care behaviors and self-efficacy, leading to better health outcomes such as better glycemic control. There are a variety of instruments in the literature capable of measuring self-management in T2DM population. Therefore, the aim of this review is to identify the available T2DM self-management instruments and evaluate their measurement properti

Emotion rigidity in adolescents prospectively predicts future depressive symptoms assessed via self-report and clinical interview.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by an elevated risk for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Identifying predictive risk factors is crucial for the development and timely delivery of preventative interventions. One potential risk factor is maladaptive and rigid emotion dynamics, which findings suggest is linked with depressive symptoms. Accordingly, to identify individuals at risk, the current study investigated whether emotional rigidity is a prospective predictor of depressive symptoms in adolescence using both self-reported and clinician-rated depression assessments. Development and in vitro assessment of injectable, adhesive, and self-healing chitosan-based hydrogels for treatment of spinal cord injury.

Injured spinal cords have a limited ability to regenerate because of the inhibitory environment formed in situ that affects neuronal regrow. Ensuring stable contact between the injuried nerves to support neural regeneration in the lesion microenvironment remains a significant challenge. To address this challenge, we have engineered a new injectable and adhesive hydrogel to treat spinal cord injuries. This hydrogel was produced by functionalizing chitosan with catechol groups and crosslinking it with different amounts of β-glycerophosphate to obtain adhesive hydrogels with tunable mechanical pr

A digital self-help tool to promote mental well-being for Ukrainians affected by war - Assessing predictors of stress.

UNLABELLED: Recent studies show the importance of timing of an intervention in the prevention of mental health disorders followed by exposure to traumatic experiences and lend further support to the concept of the "golden hours". On the second day of the war escalation in Ukraine, a psychological first aid (PFA) digital intervention was launched aimed at promoting the well-being of the population at risk. Chatbot 'Friend' provided psychoeducation and self-help guidance on how to cope with war-related stress. About 50,000 users interacted with the chatbot from March 2022 until the end of May 20

Empirically Assessing the Effectiveness of the Pathways Programme: An Online Self-Help Intervention for Male Sexual Aggression at UK Universities.

Though contemporary evidence suggests that upwards of one-in-nine UK male university students engage in sexually violent behaviors (Hales and Gannon in Sexual Abuse 34:744-770, 2022), few evidence-based primary prevention strategies have been developed to prevent their perpetration. To help contribute to this evidence gap, this study evaluated the short and longer-term effectiveness of a novel psychoeducation-based online self-help intervention for university male sexual aggression called The Pathways Programme. Designed around current empirical understanding of university-based sexual harm in

Self-administered questionnaire assessing childhood cancer treatments and associated risks for adverse health outcomes - The KiKme study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at particularly high risk for therapy-related late sequelae, with secondary primary neoplasms (SPN) being the most detrimental. Since there is no standardized questionnaire for retrospective assessment of associations between prior cancer treatments and late health effects, we developed a self-administered questionnaire and validated it in a cohort of CCS. METHODS: CCS of a first primary neoplasm (FPN, N=340) only or with a subsequent SPN (N=101) were asked whether they had received cancer therapies. Self-reports were compared to participants'
