The group self.

Although people often tend to consider themselves and others as unique individuals, there are many situations in which they think, feel, and act primarily as group members. This can bring out the best in them, as when they are inspired to help fellow citizens in need, or the worst, as when they show hostility against others simply because they represent another religious or ethnic group. Understanding when and why the group self becomes more important than the individual self, and how this affects people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, can help to prevent and redirect unwelcome aspects of

Treatment seeking among Ontario problem gamblers: results of a population survey.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined help seeking for gambling concerns among people with different levels of gambling problems. METHODS: Ontario adults who had gambled more than dollars 100 (N=4,217) and who screened positive for a possible gambling problem (N=1,205) were classified according to gambling problem severity and asked about their experiences with gambling treatment. RESULTS: Only 6% of gamblers had ever accessed a service, including a self-help group or self-help materials. With self-help materials excluded, only 3% of gamblers (from 1% of those who met only the initial CLiP screenin

A qualitative investigation of families' needs in the transition to early intervention after diagnosis of hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Families of children with hearing loss must make a number of decisions during the transition from diagnosis of hearing loss to enrolment in early intervention and thus require a wealth of information and support. This study aimed to investigate families' needs during this period and explore how these needs might differ for families of children with hearing loss who have additional disabilities. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study incorporating semistructured in-depth interviews and thematic analysis was used. A total of 28 participants from two groups were involved: (a) fami

[Certification of myasthenia centres: developing and implementing a certification procedure for patient organisations].

BACKGROUND: Certifications for quality management systems or disease-specific certifications have become increasingly popular in the German healthcare system. For chronic or rare diseases, however, patient safety and a patient-centred healthcare management have high priority. These aspects are often not adequately accounted for by the usual certification models. METHODS: The BQS Institute for Quality and Patient Safety has developed a certification for the Deutsche Myasthenie Gesellschaft (DMG), a patients' self-help organisation. Standards for the certification were drafted by medical expert

Xeroderma pigmentosum family support group: Helping families and promoting clinical initiatives.

The past two decades of research into Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), an autosomal recessive disease, has been marked by significant progress in understanding the molecular basis of this rare disease. More importantly, especially from the perspective of the affected families, is that this knowledge has been applied to diagnose the condition both in utero as well as in the very early days of life. The eight known XP genes and their different phenotypes present a number of challenges that the XP Workshop sponsored by the NIH in 2010 has highlighted. There is little current treatment specifically des

What do suicide survivors tell us they need? Results of a pilot study.

Few studies have examined the natural coping efforts used by suicide survivors, or have identified specific problems and needs survivors experience following the death of a significant other by suicide. In the present study, we used a newly developed needs assessment survey to examine four areas of natural coping efforts: practical, psychological, and social difficulties; formal and informal sources of support; resources utilized in healing; and barriers to finding support since the loss. Sixty-three adult survivors of suicide were recruited from suicide survivor conferences and support groups

Activating older adults with serious mental illness for collaborative primary care visits.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with serious mental illness frequently receive inadequate medical care and are more likely to experience difficulty navigating the health care system compared with the general population. To address this gap in quality, we developed a program of peer co-led collaborative activation training for primary care (CAT-PC) designed to improve "patient activation" and person-centered care in primary care visits for middle-aged and older adults with serious mental illness and cardiovascular risk. This report presents pilot study feasibility and participant outcomes for CAT-PC. METHO

Effectiveness of a Guided Web-Based Self-help Intervention to Prevent Depression in Patients With Persistent Back Pain: The PROD-BP Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Depression is a frequent comorbid condition in patients with persistent back pain and is associated with substantial adverse consequences, including the risk of developing opioid use disorders. Shifting the focus from depression treatment to preventing depression might be a viable way to reduce the disease burden. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a web-based self-help intervention to reduce the incidence of major depressive episode (MDE) in patients with persistent back pain. Commercial surrogacy: how provisions of monetary remuneration and powers of international law can prevent exploitation of gestational surrogates.

Increasing globalisation and advances in artificial reproductive techniques have opened up a whole new range of possibilities for infertile couples across the globe. Inter-country gestational surrogacy with monetary remuneration is one of the products of medical tourism meeting in vitro fertilisation embryo transfer. Filled with potential, it has also been a hot topic of discussion in legal and bioethics spheres. Fears of exploitation and breach of autonomy have sprung from the current situation, where there is no international regulation of surrogacy agreements--only a web of conflicting nati

12-Step participation reduces medical use costs among adolescents with a history of alcohol and other drug treatment.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents who attend 12-step groups following alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment are more likely to remain abstinent and to avoid relapse post-treatment. We examined whether 12-step attendance is also associated with a corresponding reduction in health care use and costs. METHODS: We used difference-in-difference analysis to compare changes in seven-year follow-up health care use and costs by changes in 12-step participation. Four Kaiser Permanente Northern California AOD treatment programs enrolled 403 adolescents, 13-18-years old, into a longitudinal cohort study upon AOD

[Lupus in Germany: analysis within the German lupus self-help organization (LULA)].

During the last few decades, the prognosis for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (LE) has changed from high early mortality to a more chronic longterm course. Although the prevalence of LE has been estimated at 20-50/100,000, data concerning the situation of LE patients in Germany are sparse. Since 2001, a documentation within the German Lupus Self-Help Organisation scheduled for a period of 10 years (LULA) has been recording at the patient level the actual status and the long-term course of a large group of LE patients. A questionnaire adapted from the German rheumatological database

Guided versus unguided chatbot-delivered cognitive behavioral intervention for individuals with moderate-risk and problem gambling: A randomized controlled trial (GAMBOT2 study).

BACKGROUND: Internet-based interventions can be a promising option for individuals with problem gambling facing barriers to seeking help. This study aimed to directly compare the effects of therapist-guided Internet interventions with unguided ones on gambling-related behavior, cognition, and stage of change including help-seeking intention. METHODS: We conducted a participant-blinded randomized controlled trial of therapist-guided versus unguided groups with a 12-week follow-up. Both groups received self-help chatbot-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy. Additionally, at baseline and weeks

Is glucose self-monitoring beneficial in non-insulin-treated diabetic patients? Results of a randomized comparative trial.

To study if self-monitoring of glucose, urinary or capillary, could help them to improve their metabolic control through better compliance to diet and/or hypoglycaemic agents, 208 non-insulin-treated poorly controlled diabetic patients were randomized to: group A--regular HbA1c determinations but no self-monitoring, group B--self-urine glucose monitoring, twice every other day, group C--self blood glucose monitoring, twice every other day, and followed six months. At the end of the study period, the decrease of HbA1c over six months--main endpoint--was not significantly different between the t

The COVID-19 pandemic and eating disorders in children, adolescents, and emerging adults: virtual care recommendations from the Canadian consensus panel during COVID-19 and beyond.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has had detrimental effects on mental health. Literature on the impact on individuals with eating disorders is slowly emerging. While outpatient eating disorder services in Canada have attempted to transition to virtual care, guidelines related to optimal virtual care in this field are lacking. As such, the objective of our Canadian Consensus Panel was to develop clinical practice guidelines related to the provision of virtual care for children, adolescents, and emerging adults living with an eating disorder, as well as their caregivers, during the COVID-19 pan

Remote treatment of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder: a randomized trial of Internet-assisted cognitive behavioural therapy.

The present study investigated the efficacy of self-help based on cognitive behaviour therapy in combination with Internet support in the treatment of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. After confirming the diagnosis with an in-person interview, 73 patients were randomly allocated to treatment or a waiting list control group. Treated individuals showed marked improvement after 12 weeks of self-help compared to the control group on both primary and secondary outcome measures. Intent-to-treat analyses revealed that 37% (46% among completers) had no binge eating or purging at the end of t
