Eleven patients with panic disorder were administered ritanserin, a post-synaptic serotonin S2 antagonist, during a 4 week period at a daily dose of 10-20 mg. The treatment resulted in a decrease in the number of panic attacks, and a diminution of agoraphobic avoidance. The possible practical and theoretical signification of these findings is discussed.

The possible involvement of calcium in the regulation of retinal serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity was investigated using eye cups of Xenopus laevis cultured in defined medium. Omitting CaCl2 from the culture medium completely inhibited the dark-dependent increase of NAT activity at night. Children with early infantile autism have often high platelet serotonin (5 HT) levels. According to this fact, we wondered if a genetic abnormality of 5 HT metabolism could be detected in family members of autistic children. Diarrhea that arises in mice given serotonin intravenously is not suppressed by tipindolol, LSD-25, ciproheptadine in doses in which these drugs block the D and T serotonin-reactive structures, or is not reduced by hexonium, thereby providing no evidence in favour of the reflex nature of the effect. The nature and specificity of the effect of histamine H1- and H2-receptor antagonists on the uptake of serotonin (5HT), norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) were studied in rat forebrain synaptosomes.
