Small ruminant production system characteristics and their influence on use, alternatives of, and resistance to antimicrobials in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: As the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) escalates globally, the influence of indiscriminate antimicrobial use (AMU) in livestock cannot be overlooked. Antimicrobial use practices are continually explored in larger food-producing animals; however, small ruminants (sheep and goats) receive comparatively less research attention. Our study addresses this gap by investigating small ruminant production practices in Nigeria and exploring how they affect the use of antimicrobials and alternatives. METHODS: We adopted a mixed-methods study design. A semi-structured questionnaire wa

Irrational use of antimalarial drugs in rural areas of eastern Pakistan: a random field study.

BACKGROUND: Prescription of antimalarial drugs in the absence of malarial disease is a common practice in countries where malaria is endemic. However, unwarranted use of such drugs can cause side effects in some people and is a financial drain on local economies. In this study, we surveyed the prevalence of malaria parasites in humans, and the prevalence of the malaria transmitting mosquito vectors in the study area. We also investigated the use of antimalarial drugs in the local people. We focused on randomly selected rural areas of eastern Pakistan where no malaria cases had been reported si

Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) as a tool to enhance bovine tuberculosis surveillance in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

In areas with low bovine tuberculosis (bTB) prevalence, such as Santa Catarina state, Brazil, effective surveillance is essential for disease eradication. Current strategies may miss high-risk farms by inadequately considering spatial risk factors. This study used Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) to analyze spatial risk patterns in Santa Catarina, Brazil, leveraging the official veterinary service's (CIDASC's Sigen+ database) farm data, testing history, and animal movement records. Results revealed that while existing surveillance targets many high-risk areas, some remain unmonitored. Practices

Predictive models for heat stress assessment in Holstein dairy heifers using infrared thermography and machine learning.

Heat stress is a condition that impairs the animal's productive and reproductive performance, and can be monitored by physiological and environmental variables, including body surface temperature, through infrared thermography. The objective of this work is to develop computational models for classification of heat stress from respiratory rate variable in dairy cattle using infrared thermography. The database used for the construction of the models was obtained from 10 weaned heifers, housed in a climate chamber with temperature control, and submitted to thermal comfort and heat wave treatment

First detection of feline sporotrichosis (Sporothrix brasiliensis) at the zoonoses control service in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do sul, Brazil.

Sporotrichosis is a traumatic mycosis affecting the skin or subcutaneous tissues caused by Sporothrix dimorphic fungus. The fungal complex includes several pathogenic species, out of which S. brasiliensis and S. schenckii are predominant in Brazil. In Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) state, the first human and animal cases were reported in 2016 in Corumbá and Ladário cities. Accordingly, we present the first occurrences of feline sporotrichosis detected in the state capital Campo Grande, MS, by the Zoonoses Control Service (ZCS) of the Municipal Public Health Department. The study included four allocht

Generation of Replication Deficient Human Adenovirus 5 (Ad5) Vectored FMD Vaccines.

Adenovirus vectors offer a convenient platform for the expression of antigens and have become an attractive system for vaccine development. Currently, the most successful approach to the development of new foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccines has been the production of a replication-defective human serotype 5 adenovirus that delivers the capsid and capsid processing coding regions of FMD virus (FMDV) (Ad5-FMD). A specific construct for FMDV serotype A24 has been fully developed into a commercial product fulfilling the requirements of the Center of Veterinary Biologics (CVB) of the Animal and

Ionizing Radiation-Induced Brain Cell Aging and the Potential Underlying Molecular Mechanisms.

Population aging is occurring rapidly worldwide, challenging the global economy and healthcare services. Brain aging is a significant contributor to various age-related neurological and neuropsychological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Several extrinsic factors, such as exposure to ionizing radiation, can accelerate senescence. Multiple human and animal studies have reported that exposure to ionizing radiation can have varied effects on organ aging and lead to the prolongation or shortening of life span depending on the radiation dose or dose rate. This paper

EpiScanGIS: an online geographic surveillance system for meningococcal disease.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of infectious diseases increasingly relies on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The integration of pathogen fine typing data in dynamic systems and visualization of spatio-temporal clusters are a technical challenge for system development. RESULTS: An online geographic information system (EpiScanGIS) based on open source components has been launched in Germany in May 2006 for real time provision of meningococcal typing data in conjunction with demographic information (age, incidence, population density). Spatio-temporal clusters of disease detected by computer ass

Identification of beta-lactam antibiotics in tissue samples containing unknown microbial inhibitors.

Antibiotic residues in animal tissues can be detected by various screening tests based on microbial inhibition. In the 7-plate assay used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), penicillinase is incorporated into all but one plate to distinguish beta-lactam antibiotics from other types. However, beta-lactams such as cloxacillin and the cephalosporins are resistant to degradation by penicillinase. They may not be identified as beta-lactams by this procedure, and thus, they may be identified as unidentified microbial inhibitors (UMIs). However, these pe

Trends in the incidence and transmission patterns of trichinosis in humans in the United States: comparisons of the periods 1975-1981 and 1982-1986.

Since 1947, the U.S. Public Health Service has recorded statistics on reported cases of trichinosis in humans. More complete clinical and epidemiologic data on cases became available after 1965, when trichinosis was officially made a notifiable disease. The numbers of reported cases declined markedly from an average of approximately 400, with 10-15 deaths reported each year in the late 1940s, to 57 per year, with three deaths in the 5 years 1982-1986. Although annual incidence was highest in sparsely populated Alaska, the highest numbers of cases are reported from the northeastern United State

A case-control study of testicular cancer using Connecticut tumour registry data.

This case-control study was designed to determine whether males who were exposed to diethylstilboestrol (DES) in utero are at increased risk of testicular cancer. Questionnaires were completed for 79 residents of Connecticut, who were diagnosed with primary cancer of the testes between 1945 and approximately six months into 1980. An equal number of matched controls drawn from birth certificate records available from the Connecticut State Department of Health Services also submitted questionnaires. Information included data on past medical conditions of subjects and obstetrical history of mothe

Impotence in the bull: (1) Abnormal venous drainage of the corpus cavernosum penis.

Six young bulls (two Friesian, two Charolais, one polled Devon and one North Devon) that had never served successfully, showed good libido but lacked penile erection. In five of these bulls, the short flaccid organ was not protruded during attempted service. Radiography of the cavernous bodies and veins of the penis in the living animal demonstrated major venous drainage of the corpus cavernosum penis (ccp) by the dorsal venous system in all cases. This was not seen in normal bulls. Radiography and anatomical preparations of post mortem specimens showed that the ccp was drained by the dorsal v

Simulated Targeted Anthelmintic Treatment Maintains Dung Removal but Not Dung-Inhabiting Insect Communities.

The intensive use of antiparasitic treatments, such as macrocyclic lactones, is known to affect non-target dung-inhabiting insects, leading to reduced community functioning and ecosystem services. We describe the development of a spatially explicit simulation to assess the effects of the treatment of different proportions of a livestock herd with anthelmintics, a strategy known as targeted selective treatment. We simulated the treatment of a varying proportion of a livestock herd with antiparasitics, and the effects inflicted on three dung-inhabiting insect guilds (flies, endocoprids and parac

Detection of skunk adenovirus-1 in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius).

We describe gross pathology, histopathology, ultrastructure, and molecular characterization of skunk adenovirus 1 (SkAdV-1) in 3 ferrets (Mustela putorius) submitted to the Infectious Diseases Laboratory, Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service at the University of Georgia. Case 1 came from a cohort with a 6-week history of multiple ferrets with respiratory disease and mortality. Cases 2 and 3 were submitted 19 days later; they died 3 days after arrival at the vendor's facility. Histopathological evaluation found evidence of suppurative bronchopneumonia, with intralesional gram-positive cocci

Improving dairy production in Malawi: a literature review.

Milk production in Malawi is stagnating while steadily increasing in neighboring countries. We performed a literature review to identify factors negatively affecting milk production in Malawi and propose potential solutions to overcome the particular constraints. We structured the analysis along the value chain with three major components: upstream providers, on-farm production, and downstream providers. It is shown that the literature strongly focuses on on-farm constraints and most prominently on animal health, breed choice, and milk yield. The literature research did not reveal any reasons

Prevention of disease caused by fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole: the way forward.

Few months after the publication of the monographic section of Annali dell'Istituto Superiore di Sanità second issue of 2014 "Health impact of fibres with fluoro-edenitic composition", the carcinogenicity of fluoro-edenite was assessed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in the frame of Monograph 111. The IARC Working Group concluded that there is sufficient evidence in humans that exposure to fluoro-edenite fibrous amphibole causes mesothelioma, and sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. Fluoro-edenite was allocated to Group 1 (the agent is carci

Report: Osteocyte enhancement function of bisphosphonates in prosthetic replacement.

Aseptic loosening after prosthetic replacement is the primary cause of shortened service life and lowered stability of prosthesis, and increased revision rate after joint replacement. Factors of causing the loosening of joint prosthesis include mechanical factors and biological factors. The mechanical effect of bisphosphonates (BP) is quite obvious, which can enhance osteocyte function, accelerate the generation of new bone and lower bone resorption activity of osteoclast and macrophage. In animal experiment and adjuvant therapy of patients after joint replacement, BP also shows up the functio
