Carpal injuries were the most prevalent injuries overall in 2018 (51%) and 2019 (52%). In 2020, shoulder injuries were most prevalent (27%), suggesting that trail conditions may have differed between years. The majority of dogs with an orthopedic injury ultimately were removed from competition (156 of 234, or 66.6%), but the likelihood of finishing the race wit …

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dislocations are common injuries among athletes. Patients with instability after their injury often require stabilization procedures for treatment. The primary outcome measure was to see whether there was any correlation between the side of traumatic shoulder dislocation and dominance of hand. Secondary outcomes were to look at subgroups of age and sporting discipline.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study recruited all patients with a frank dislocation that required arthroscopic surgical stabilization who attended the same private orthopedic surgeon. Exclusion criteria inclu

Posterior dislocations are infrequent injuries of the proximal humerus, counting for 1-4% of all shoulder dislocations. Frequently, they are related to epileptic seisures or electric current injuries or accompany complete anatomical neck fractures of the proximal humerus. Very frequently, they remain undiagnosed and their late diagnosis results in poor functional outcomes. The authors assess the surgical procedure and its results in five cases of primarily undiagnosed posterior dislocations. In two cases, transposition of the m. subscapularis was performed, in one case hemiarthroplasty, and in

Brachial plexus injuries will cause a significantly decreased quality of life. Patients with upper arm type brachial plexus injuries, which means C5 and C6 roots injury, will lose their shoulder elevation/abduction/external rotation, and elbow flexion function. Additional elbow, wrist, and hand extension function deficit will occur in patients with C7 root injury. With the advances of reconstructive procedures, the upper arm brachial plexus injuries can be successfully restored through nerve repair, nerve grafting, nerve transfer, muscle / tendon transfer and free functioning muscle transfer.

Because of its inherent superior soft tissue contrast and lack of ionizing radiation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is highly suited to study the complex anatomy of the shoulder joint, particularly when assessing the relatively high incidence of shoulder injuries in young, athletic patients. This review aims to serve as a primer for understanding shoulder MRI in an algorithmical approach, including MRI protocol and technique, normal anatomy and anatomical variations of the shoulder, pathologic conditions of the rotator cuff tendons and muscles, the long head of the biceps tendon, shoulder i…

Currently, there is no overview of the incidence and (volleyball-specific) risk factors of musculoskeletal injuries among volleyball players … scus (sports and sports medicine literature) via EBSCOhost. The results showed that ankle, knee and shoulder injuries are the most common injuries sustained while playing volleyball. Results are presented separately for acute and overuse injuries, as well as for contact and non-contact injuries. Measures to prevent musculoskeletal injuries, anterior knee injuries a …

Revision shoulder surgery can pose significant analgesic challenges as locoregional blocks are often avoided to enable early recognition of iatrogenic nerve injuries. Our case describes the utilisation of pre-operative and intra-operative low-frequency percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation via a 'dry' interscalene catheter, inserted pre-operatively for a patient presenting for revision total shoulder arthroplasty who was experiencing significant shoulder joint pain despite a prior total shoulder arthroplasty. The clinical considerations and safety aspects are discussed further.

Initial, traumatic shoulder dislocations, particularly in an anterior direction, are among the most common shoulder injuries. Traditionally, nonsurgical treatment for first-time shoulder dislocations consists of immobilization in internal rotation (IR). However, there is a high rate of recurrence after this course of treatment. Recent reports indicate that immobilization in external rotation (ER) instead of IR may more effectively reduce recurrence rates, resulting in a viable nonsurgical treatment option for patients sustaining an initial shoulder dislocation.

The role of biceps tendon as a source of shoulder pain and pathology has been well documented in orthopedic literature. Recently, interest in the long head of the biceps tendon has been renewed as its association with subscapularis lesions, superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) lesions, rotator cuff pathology, impingement, and pulley or "hidden" lesions of the rotator interval are demonstrated. Advances in imaging and arthroscopy have increased our breadth of knowledge about the anatomy, pathology, and role of the biceps tendon. Management and treatment methods have evolved with improve

Subcoracoid acromioclavicular dislocations are rarely seen injuries of the shoulder. We present a patient with multiple injuries and a subcoracoid acromioclavicular dislocation resulting from a falling injury. Physical examination revealed painful mechanical block at 90 degrees of abduction and swelling in the acromioclavicular region. Diagnosis was made with direct radiographs and computerized tomography. Treatment consisted of distal clavicular resection and coracoclavicular reconstruction with the transfer of the coracoacromial ligament over the clavicle. The patient had a pain-free shoulde

The advent of the arthroscope has revolutionized orthopaedic surgery, particularly for injuries to the knee or shoulder. The enhanced visualization accompanied by minimal soft tissue injury afforded by the arthroscope has been applied successfully to the treatment of many shoulder girdie pathologies, most notably impingement syndrome and rotator cuff injuries. As such, the traditional open surgery with the incumbent morbidity, while still utilized for more complex tears is finding less application in smaller tears to the rotator cuff. This review will address the history, indications, techniqu

Luxatio erecta accounts for only 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations. More than 150 cases have been described in the literature, focusing mainly on the method of reduction and/or associated complications. Some of the well-described complications include injuries to the humeral head, glenoid, clavicle, rotator cuff, capsules and ligaments, brachial plexus and axillary artery/vein. Among these, rotator cuff injuries are reported to occur in about 80% of cases. However, in the majority of instances, cuff injuries have been managed conservatively and have been reported to apparently provide optimal

Shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus injury occur in 0.5% to 1.5% of all births. Risk factors for both include maternal obesity, excessive prenatal weight gain, maternal diabetes, protracted labor, and fetal macrosomia. These factors are involved in only about 50% of births complicated by shoulder dystocia or brachial plexus injury. Shoulder dystocia has a low recurrence rate (9.8%-16.7%), although history of previous shoulder dystocia is the most reliable predictor of occurrence. Brachial plexus injury is the most common morbidity associated with shoulder dystocia, but 50% of newborns who pr

Instrumental vaginal deliveries have been associated with higher risks of brachial plexus injuries. The proposed mechanisms involve the indirect association of instrumental deliveries with shoulder dystocia and nerve stretch injuries secondary to rotations of 90 degrees or more. We present a brachial plexus paresis resulting from direct compression of the forceps blade in the fetal neck. A term infant was delivered by a low Kielland forceps rotation. No shoulder dystocia was noted. The immediate neonatal exam revealed an Erb's palsy and an ipsilateral bruise in the lateral aspect of the neck.

BACKGROUND: Sport injuries are now becoming a major issue affecting training in paddle sports. This study was to investigate the distribution and prevalence of injuries among adolescent flat-water kayak and canoe athletes.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective design study to survey one-hundred forty Chinese elite adolescent flat-water kayak and canoe athletes (89 kayakers and 51 canoers; 81 males and 59 females, with an average age of 16 years) using a self-reported questionnaire. The questionnaire investigated basic information and kayak- and canoe-related injuries over the past year. The p

Increased participation in youth sports has led to a corresponding increase in throwing-related injuries among skeletally immature athletes. These injuries often stem from overuse and can in part be attributed to sport specialization leading to year-round sport participation without adequate rest and an increase in volume of practices and games during the season. Injuries that occur in skeletally immature athletes can be unique to this population due to the vulnerability of the open growth plates. Common injuries include Little League shoulder (proximal humeral epiphysiolysis), internal imping

CLINICAL SCENARIO: It has been suggested that posterior shoulder tightness is a common contributor to shoulder impingement in overhead-throwing athletes. The incidence of shoulder pain in the general population has been reported to be as high as 27%, and as many as 74% of the patients who were seen for shoulder issues had signs of impingement. Particularly regarding physically active adults, shoulder impingement is frequent among overhead-throwing athletes and may lead to lost participation in sport, as well as other injuries including labral pathologies. Therefore, finding an effective mechan

Trauma-induced shoulder dislocations and sprains rank among the most common upper extremity injuries, with contact sports accounting for the majority of cases. These injuries often lead to substantial impairments in joint function and long recovery times, requiring targeted therapeutic interventions to restore mobility and prevent recurrent injuries. Given the pivotal role of exercise therapy in restoring shoulder function, this study systematically reviews the literature on the comparative effectiveness of supervised versus self-managed exercise therapy following acute shoulder trauma.
