Physical symptoms, general and breast cancer-specific distress, and perceived breast cancer risk were assessed in 66 women with benign breast problems (BBP) and 66 age-matched healthy comparison (HC) women. BBP women reported significantly greater worry about breast cancer than HC women. Breast symptom incidence and breast cancer risk perceptions were found to mediate group differences in breast cancer worry. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that perceptions of control over a potential breast cancer prognosis moderate the impact of breast symptoms on reports of breast cancer worry. I

Going through a life-threatening illness as a child or adolescent is a tremendously stressful experience for the entire family. Although the majority of survivors do go on to adjust and function well, some have ongoing problems. These problems include evidence of posttraumatic stress, learning difficulties, depression, and anxiety. This study evaluated 36 cancer patients who were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted over a 4-week period to evaluate the efficacy of alprazolam in the treatment of anxiety associated with cancer. A survey was designed to investigate the previously unaddressed issue of resistance to discharge from speech therapy. One hundred and eighty-seven speech-language clinicians in clinical and hospital settings were sent a questionnaire based on research from the medical profession indicating that patients may become overly dependent on their physicians. Eighty-six percent of 159 usable respondents reported their clients resisted discharge. Many speech-language pathologists suggested techniques they have used to manage such clients.
