OBJECTIVE: Complete surgical cytoreduction is the most important prognostic factor of survival in patients with peritoneal metastases from various cancers, including ovarian cancer. In order to achieve the optimum result, surgeons use extensive procedures that involve peritonectomies and multivisceral resections. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) aims to eliminate all macroscopic disease by achieving complete cytoreduction. This article describes a surgical approach designed to achieve total extraperitoneal access for parietal peritonectomy.
STUDY DESIGN: Visceral resections and parietal peritonect

BACKGROUND/AIM: Right ventricular cardiac metastasis from colorectal cancer (CRC) is rare and clinically silent. There is no standardised treatment. To date, only twelve cases have been reported in the literature. This is a case report and literature review of right ventricular cardiac metastasis from CRC.
CASE REPORT: A 75-year-old woman with a history of CRC treated with sigmoidectomy followed by liver and lung metastasectomy presented with a right ventricle tumour. Biopsy showed metastatic adenocarcinoma not suitable for resection because multiple lung metastases coexisted. The metastases

The patient, a male in his 70s, visited our hospital with a chief complaint of general fatigue and weight loss. Upon a detailed examination, he was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer, para-aortic lymph node metastases, and multiple liver metastases, for which he was hospitalized due to a poor performance status(PS). FOLFOX therapy was administered as the symptoms caused by the primary lesion were not recognized and his general condition was considered to be poor and thus he was deemed to be inoperable. After completing 2 courses of the chemotherapy, although his PS improved, laparoscopic sigm

Benign neural tumors or tumor-like lesions are rarely detected in the gastrointestinal tract. In this article, we present the case of a neural lesion of the sigmoid colon, which was incidentally detected in a 68-year-old man treated with laparoscopic low anterior resection for an advanced carcinoma of the rectosigmoid junction. Within the resected specimen, a submucosal tumor-like protruding lesion was found in the sigmoid colon. Histologically, the growth was composed of mucosal neurofibromatous and submucosal ganglioneuromatous lesions, between which there was transition. Immunohistochemical

We report here a case of long-term survival with repeated peritoneal recurrences after resection of perforated sigmoid colon cancer. A 65-year-old man presented with diarrhea and abdominal pain. Computed tomography(CT)revealed diffuse peritonitis caused by perforated sigmoid colon cancer. We performed sigmoidectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy and descending colostomy. Postoperatively, S-1 was administered for 12 months as adjuvant chemotherapy. CT showed peritoneal nodules 56 months after the surgery. After 10 courses of mFOLFOX6 plus bevacizumab, the tumors decreased in size (reduction rate of 34

We report a case of restenosis after performing stenting twice for ileus caused by peritoneal dissemination that occurred after surgery for sigmoid colon cancer, in which colostomy was performed to improve the patient's QOL. The patient was a 58-year-old woman who underwent sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer. She presented with a peritoneal recurrence 3 times, and the third surgery was a non-curative resection. Chemotherapy was administered but was discontinued because of severe adverse events, and the patient was followed up with the best supportive care. An anastomotic stricture occurred

An 87-year-old man visited our hospital with a chief complaint of melena. Invagination caused by rectal cancer or sigmoid colon cancer was suspected as a result of physical and radiological examinations. Since there were no subjective symptoms, laparoscopic surgery was planned electively. As an operative finding, a tumor was found in the rectosigmoid colon and caused invagination. The invagination was released during an operation, and high anterior resection with D3 dissection was performed laparoscopically. The operation time was 108 minutes and the amount of blood loss was 22 mL. Although an

BACKGROUND: Abdominal wound extraction site continues to be a major source of morbidity after laparoscopic-assisted surgery.
METHODS: A 59-year-old African American woman with a past history of T3N2M1 colon cancer, who underwent laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy and wedge liver resection (segment IV A) followed by adjuvant chemotherapy was our subject for this study. Twelve months later, she was found to have a positron emission tomography positive liver lesion of 6.5 cm at the left lateral liver segment. A combined laparoscopic-transvaginal approach was used. Four 5-mm trocars were used. The li

We report herein the case of a giant lipoma of the greater omentum that was treated by laparoscopic surgery. A 71-year-old male patient was admitted with a diagnosis of sigmoid colon cancer. During preoperative examination, a gallbladder stone and an intra-abdominal giant lipoma were accidentally diagnosed. Laparoscopic examination revealed a smooth-surfaced, giant yellow tumor at the lower border of the greater omentum that was unattached to the surrounding organs. After laparoscopic resection of the tumor and cholecystectomy, a 10-cm midline incision was made in the lower abdomen to remove t

We report a rare case of colon cancer in which a depressed-type tumor only 5 mm in diameter invaded the submucosal layer and produced intermediate lymph node metastasis. A 47-year-old male received a total colonoscopy for a depressed-type lesion with marginal elevation in the sigmoid colon. The lesion measured 5 mm in diameter. On chromoendoscopic examination, the depression was clearly demarcated and an irregular pit pattern was identified in the demarcated area by magnification suggesting invasion of the submucosal layer requiring surgery. Laparoscopic-assisted sigmoidectomy was performed an

A case of adenosquamous carcinoma of the sigmoid colon is presented herein. An 85-year-old woman without any symptoms was admitted to our hospital to undergo detailed examinations of the colon and rectum. Colonoscopy showed a huge type 2 tumor in the sigmoid colon. A typical sigmoid colectomy and lymph node dissection were performed. A histopathological investigation demonstrated adenosquamous carcinoma invading the subserosa. Although an absolute curative resection was performed, she died of metastatic lung carcinoma 14 months after the operation.

This case is the first reported presentation of obstructive anuria due to extrinsic ureteral compression in a patient with dermatomyositis. Further evaluation revealed disseminated sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. Conservative treatment of ureteral obstruction by internal double-J stents achieved appropriate palliation.

The case of an extrauterine heterologous malignant mixed müllerian tumor (MMMT) of primary peritoneal origin occurring in a 63 yr old woman is presented. The tumor was a 19 cm, soft, friable mass arising from the serosa of the sigmoid colon and spreading to adjacent pelvic peritoneum. The uterus, tubes and ovaries were uninvolved. It was composed of sarcomatous areas showing cartilaginous and rhabdomyoblastic differentiation and sharply demarcated carcinomatous areas showing endometrioid and serous differentiation. This is the thirteenth reported case of an extragenital MMMT. It demonstrates t

The authors report a case of uro-colonic tumour developing four years after ureterosigmoidostomy in a male patient treated for invasive bladder tumour. After a current follow-up of five years for this colonic tumour, they studied their case in comparison with the data from the literature and the experimental model in order to better understand the natural history of these tumours. The following principal points are discussed: time to onset, histological nature and course of these tumours; essential elements in this type of carcinogenesis, practical clinical implications and follow-up of patien

In mid-August, 1986, a 50-year-old man underwent a detailed examination following the finding of a tumor in the upper abdominal region. The tumor was revealed to be a sigmoid colon cancer with multiple metastasis to both halves of the liver. Subsequent administration of FT-207 suppositories (750 mg X 2/day) resulted in a recognizable shrinkage of the metastatic lesions in the liver after one month, and a barium enema a month later indicated a decrease in the size of the original tumor. The pre-operative CEA value was 2,317 ng/ml, but this has reduced to 46.7 ng/ml to date March, 1987. In this

Two cases of carcinoma in Crohn's disease of the colon are reported. One patient was a 30-year-old man who had asymptomatic Crohn's ileocolitis resulting in an acute presentation due to toxic dilatation of the colon. This was preceded by a short prodromal period of four weeks, characterized by intermittent diarrhea on the basis of a coloileal tumor fistula. A mucus-secreting adenocarcinoma was present in the sigmoid colon associated with both adjacent and one nearby focus of high-grade mucosal dysplasia. Pelvic wall and abdominal metastases were present, and the patient died two months later.

In an endoscopic screening study of rectosigmoidal polyps in a defined normal population aged 50-59 years, polyps 5 mm or larger in diameter were removed by diathermic snare resection for histological examination. Histological examination was possible in 50 of 55 polyps removed during colonoscopy from 27 men and 17 women. Of these polyps 41 (82%) were adenomas--12 with moderate dysplasia, 1 with severe dysplasia, and 2 with intramucosal carcinoma. In addition, a small ulcerating carcinoma, Dukes stage A, was found. A greater extent of dysplasia was found in rectosigmoidal adenomas in women, wh

Vaginal elimination of stool due to sigmoid-uterine fistula was the first symptom in a case of neoplasia of the sigma. Few instances of a similar fistula appear in the literature. Bouskela, Chérisié, Yourde and Taieb observed one case starting from the uterus. McGregor & Bacon have described a fistula starting from the colon due to diverticulitis, as have Colceck & Staumann, Smalley et al., and Johnston & Stubbs. No previous example of tumour of the large intestine as the cause of a fistula with the corpus uteri could be found. On examination, the patient presented losss of stool via the vagin
