Appraisal and characterization of candida load isolated from the oral cavity of smokers.

Cigarette smoking is regarded as a major global health risk, therefore the aim of this work was to investigate the association of oral Candida spp. as one of the etiological agents of denture stomatitis with smokers of cigarette, hookah (shisha), and electronic smoking, also a dose-response relationship between the duration of smoking and the probability of denture stomatitis between volunteers. Oral rinse samples were collected from 47 male volunteers including 34 smokers and 13 non-smokers, also data of volunteers were collected via a questionnaire forum. Patterns of smoking were shown that …

DNA methylation status of SHATI/NAT8L promoter in the blood of cigarette smokers.

AIMS: Cigarette smoking is a preventable risk factor for various diseases such as cancer, ischemic stroke, cardiac stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Smoking cessation is of great importance not only for individual smokers but also for social health. Regarding current cessation therapies, the effectiveness of nicotine replacement is limited, and the cost of varenicline medication is considerable. Thus, a method for screening smokers who are responsive to cessation therapy based on the therapeutic effectiveness is required. Peripheral biomarkers reflecting smoking dependence sta…

Hepatitis C and HIV detection by blood RNA-sequencing in cohort of smokers.

Detection of viruses by RNA and DNA sequencing has improved the understanding of the human virome. We sought to identify blood viral signatu … ed viral RNA in peripheral blood RNA-seq data from a COPD-enriched population of current and former smokers. Correlation between viral detection and both reported infections and relevant disease outcomes was evaluated. We identified Hepatitis C virus RNA in 228 subjects and HIV RNA in 30 subjects. Overall, we observed 31 viral species, including Epstein-B …

PM2.5-related DNA methylation and the association with lung function in non-smokers.

PM2.5 exposure leads to lung function alteration. The potential pathway underlying above association, especially the role of DNA methylation is unclear. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the associations of personal PM2.5 concentrations with DNA methylation at the epigenome-wide level, and investigate how PM2.5-related DNA methylation affects lung function. A total of 402 observations of non-smokers were selected from the Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort. PM2.5 exposure was estimated through a model established in the same population. Blood DNA methylation levels were determined through Illumina…

Massive Relief: Papillary Adenoma of the Lung in Asymptomatic Former Smoker Patient.

Benign epithelial tumors of the lung are uncommon and can represent a diagnostic challenge. Herein, we describe one such emblematic case. A 59-year-old former smoker male was admitted to the hospital complaining of cough for a long time. A radiological examination showed a centrally excavated mass strictly connected to the visceral pleura. The patient underwent tumorectomy. At gross examination, the tumor was composed of solid and cystic areas containing clear liquid. Histological examination highlighted a sub-pleural encapsulated tumor, with foci of capsular invasion, characterized by a singl

The association between cognitive coping strategies and treatment outcomes in smokers with PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous researchers have suggested that certain coping styles (e.g., maladaptive cognitive coping strategies) interfere with recovery from traumatic experiences and contribute to the onset/maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Further, given that individuals with PTSD have a high rate of smoking (e.g., Mahaffey et al., 2016) and that maladaptive coping strategies in general are associated with lower smoking quit rates, it is possible that use of maladaptive cognitive coping strategies are particularly problematic for the recovery of smokers with PTSD. The present stu…

Review of the association between periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in smokers.

Both periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are among the most common diseases associated with smoking. These conditions frequently present alongside comorbidities including diabetes, coronary heart disease, duodenal ulcer, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, osteoporosis and muscle atrophy. Chronic inflammation contributes to the pathology of both periodontitis and COPD, and in patients suffering from both conditions treatment of periodontitis may lead to relief from COPD symptoms as well. Smoking contributes to the underlying pathophysiology by causing local inf

Necessity of Epigenetic Epidemiology Studies on the Carcinogenesis of Lung Cancer in Never Smokers.

Based on epidemiological and genomic characteristics, lung cancer in never smokers (LCNS) is a different disease from lung cancer in smokers. Based on current research, the main risk factor for LCNS may be air pollution. A recent case-control study in Koreans reported that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) may be a risk factor for LCNS. Additionally, a cohort study showed that exposure to NO2 was associated with significant hypomethylation. Thus, epigenetic epidemiology studies are needed in the near future to evaluate the carcinogenesis of LCNS according to chronic exposure to air pollution and/or viral…

Effect of smoking on resting-state functional connectivity in smokers: An fMRI study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Smoking is a leading cause of death in the world. Aberrant brain function has been repeatedly linked to tobacco smoking. However, little is known about insula-based resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in non-deprived tobacco-dependent smokers. This study characterized the correlation between insula-based rsFC and tobacco dependence severity in non-deprived smokers. METHODS: A total of 37 male smokers and 37 age-matched male non-smokers completed resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) scans. The insula-based rsFC differences between smokers and controls were inv…

Variation in CYP2A6 and tobacco dependence throughout adolescence and in young adult smokers.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is influenced by genetic factors including variation in CYP2A6 and CYP2B6, which encode nicotine-metabolizing enzymes. In early adolescence, CYP2A6 slow nicotine metabolism was associated with higher dependence acquisition, but reduced cigarette consumption. Here we extend this work by examining associations of CYP2A6 and CYP2B6 with tobacco dependence acquisition in a larger sample of smokers followed throughout adolescence. METHODS: White participants from the Nicotine Dependence in Teens cohort that had ever inhaled (n=421) were followed frequently from age 12-18 years.…

A qualitative study of smokers' views on brain-based explanations of tobacco dependence.

BACKGROUND: The role the brain plays in the creation and maintenance of tobacco dependence has become increasingly prominent in explanations of smoking that are presented to the public. The potential for brain-based explanations of smoking to influence smokers' understandings of their addiction, their sense of self-efficacy, and perhaps even their treatment preferences, has been raised by some working in the addiction field. However, little empirical evidence exists in this area. METHODS: This paper reports on semi-structured interviews with 29 daily smokers. Participants were shown a brief p…

Extended varenicline treatment in a severe cardiopathic cigarette smoker: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and quitting tobacco use should be fundamental for cardiovascular patients. Varenicline is a smoking cessation pharmacological therapy able to improve the possibilities to successfully achieve this result. In 2011 the US Food and Drug Administration issued a safety announcement that varenicline may be associated with an increased risk of certain cardiovascular adverse events in patients who have cardiovascular disease. Following studies found no significant increase in cardiovascular serious adverse ev
