Glomus tumor is an uncommon, benign, soft-tissue lesion in which the cells recapitulate the structure of the normal modified smooth muscle cells of the glomus body. Glomus tumors usually occur in tissues that normally contain glomus bodies; only rarely can they develop in sites where glomus bodies are normally sparse or absent. There are three subtypes of glomus tumor, with glomangiomyoma being the rarest. No more than 10 cases of glomus tumor in female genitalia have previously been reported, involving the vulva, vaginal area, periurethral area and clitoris. A clitoral glomangiomyoma is extre

We report a case of a longstanding, large tumor involving spinal nerve roots of the cauda equina. The tumor showed small round cells arranged in nests and cords and immunophenotypic features of a glomus tumor, along with infrequent mitoses and a low Ki-67 labeling index, but exhibited some rosette-like structures, with focal CD99 and Neu-N expression. Subsequent molecular analysis showed the presence of an EWSR1-WT1 gene fusion by fluorescence in situ hybridization, which was confirmed by reverse- transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported with E

Vascular leiomyomas or angioleiomyomas are rare benign solitary smooth muscle tumors that origin usually in the extremities. Most of these tumors are composed of venous vessels. Here in, we report a rare case of subcutaneous vascular leiomyoma of the right knee of a 38 year old woman who was presented with recurrent anterior right knee pain and soft tissue swelling. Clinical findings, magnetic resonance imaging and histopathologic findings of the tumor is discussed. Leiomyomas are not mostly considered in the differential diagnosis by radiologist due to its rarity. Typical imaging and clinical…

A case of extragastrointestinal tumor of the retroperitoneum in a 48-year-old woman complaining right sided flank pain without hematuria is reported. The mass was excised from the kidney without a positive margin. The histopathological examination revealed an extragastrointestinal stromal tumor of the retroperitoneum. These tumors usually originate from the small intestine or stomach. On the other hand, they are rarely located in the retroperitoneum. These tumors typically exhibit CD117 immunoreactivity, whereas they may reveal CD34, neuron specific enolase, smooth muscle actin, desmin and S-1

Primary tumors of the epididymis are mostly benign in nature, and the most common type is adenomatoid tumors followed by leiomyomas. Leiomyoadenomatoid tumors are very rare benign epididymal neoplasms composed of two components: gland-like structures lined by cuboidal cells and bundles of smooth muscle components. The goal of treatment is testicular-preserving surgery. A preoperative and intraoperative evaluation plays an important role in proper management. To the best of our knowledge, few cases have been reported in the literature. We report a case of a right epididymal tail leiomyoadenomat

Leiomyosarcomas are malignant tumors derived from cells that exhibit smooth muscle differentiation. Although primary leiomyosarcoma of the stomach has occasionally been reported in the form of case reports, its publication in radiology journals is exceedingly rare; therefore, preoperative diagnosis remains challenging. Herein, we report the imaging and endoscopic findings of a 71-year-old woman with primary gastric leiomyosarcoma that was initially misdiagnosed as early gastric cancer on endoscopy and as a small subepithelial tumor on CT.

Leiomyomas are benign tumors that commonly arise from the uterus. They rarely occur in the nasal cavity. Leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas are clinically similar and may be difficult to distinguish preoperatively. Although PET has been reported to be useful for evaluating uterine smooth muscle tumors, the use of PET for evaluating sinonasal leiomyoma has not yet been reported. Here, we describe the images of a patient with leiomyoma of the nasal septum in whom intense FDG uptake was noted on PET/CT.

Although carcinoid tumors have occurred rarely in benign teratomas of the ovary and the testis, we believe this case is the first reported of carcinoid arising in a benign cystic teratoma of the kidney. The patient was admitted to the Tagawa Hospital with a left abdominal mass and severe epigastric pain. Retrograde and intravenous pyelograms revealed marked dilatation of the left kidney; a renal tumor was diagnosed clinically. At operation, a polycystic tumor weighing 1400g was removed. Histologically, a carcinoid tumor was evident among teratoid tissues, such as columnar epithelium, cartilage

This article provides an update of the recent developments in mesenchymal tumors of lower genital tract. We focus on the characterization of recurrent molecular events in certain genital stromal tumors, for instance angiomyofibroblastomas and superficial myofibroblastomas. Moreover, fusions involving Tyrosine-kinases receptors (NTRK, FRFR1, RET, COL1A1-PDGFB) have been demonstrated in an emerging group of mesenchymal tumors characterized by a fibrosarcoma-like morphology and a predilection for uterine cervix of premenopausal women. We also cover the topic of smooth muscle tumors of the lower g…

We describe a case of malignant pleural mesothelioma appearing as a solitary pleural tumor in a 56-year-old Japanese man with no history of exposure to asbestos. A chest radiograph revealed an isolated extrapulmonary mass in the left hemithorax. The patient underwent tumor resection, but the tumor later recurred on the contralateral pleura. The patient developed cerebral metastases and died 16 months after the initial surgery. The resected tumor was sessile with broad-based pleural attachment. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of interlacing fascicles of plump spindle cells intermixed wi

A 54-year-old female patient presented with a left nasal obstruction. On physical examination a pink delimited mass in the left nostril was observed. A cranial computed tomography scan revealed an expansive mass in the upper anterior third of the left nasal fossa, partially obstructing it. Endoscopic resection of the mass was performed. Histopathology revealed an atypical mesenchymal proliferation formed by cells disposed in disorganized and interconnected long bundles. Tumor cells had abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and an oval, vesicular and hyperchromatic nucleus. Frequent mitotic figures w

Mesoblastic nephroma is an uncommon congenital tumor of infancy that rarely occurs in adults. We report three patients (two were female, one was male) who had mesoblastic nephroma of adulthood and who presented at 45, 64, and 66 years of age with hematuria, flank mass, and pain. All underwent nephrectomy without postoperative adjuvant therapy. The tumors were solitary yellow-tan masses with solid and cystic areas involving the renal cortex (three cases) with extension into the renal pelvis and calyces (two) and ureter (one). Microscopically, all consisted of uniform spindle cell proliferations

We present our experience with three patients, two of whom were women, 16, 28 and 44 years of age, presenting with leiomyomas of the ciliary body. Salient clinical features were involvement of the left eye and temporal quadrants in two cases and extension into the anterior chamber in the other. Two patients underwent enucleation and the third had iridocyclochoroidectomy. Immunohistochemical studies showed strong positivity for muscle-specific actin, smooth muscle actin and desmin, whereas staining against vimentin, HMB-45 and S-100 protein was negative. Although there are no specific clinical

Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma (PPL) is an extremely rare malignant tumor. It has been revealed that PPL may originate from the smooth muscle of the pulmonary parenchyma, pulmonary arteries and bronchi. Patients with PPL may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms similar to those observed in other primary lung tumors. The present study reports the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with a lung mass and underwent a right upper-middle lobe bronchoscope tumor resection. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with PPL. Following the bronchoscopic tumor resection, chemotherapy was administ

BACKGROUND: Vulvar sarcomas are rare tumors. A distinctive low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma is described.
CASE: A 46-year-old female presented with a progressively enlarging vulvar mass. Pathological evaluation revealed a low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma. The immunophenotype is outlined and ultrastructural features are highlighted. Tumor cells were positive for p53 protein, smooth muscle actin, steroid receptors, and showed myofibroblastic differentiation on electron microscopy. The patient has been followed for >14 months without evidence of recurrence.
CONCLUSION: The tumor was positive

Angiomyolipoma is one of the benign hamartomas that is found sporadically or associated with tuberous sclerosis. It is a rare soft tissue tumor involving mostly the kidneys, sometimes other visceral organs. The tumor is composed of smooth muscle cells, adipocytes and small sized hyalinized vessels. We present the case of a 74-year-old man with a bifocal angiomyolipoma of the colon. This diagnosis was confirmed at surgery, where a partial colectomy was performed. Histologic examination disclosed the tumor. The patient had no signs of family history of tuberous sclerosis. Extrarenal angiomyolipo

We report on two cases of aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) of the spermatic cord occurring in two 13-year-old children. Clinically, the tumor simulated a mass of the spermatic cord. Histologically, it represented a poorly circumscribed, benign myxoid tumor, with a sparse population of stromal cells immunoreactive for vimentin and, focally, for smooth muscle actin. No immunostaining for desmin, S-100, p53, p21waf-1, c-Erb-B2 and estrogen-progesterone receptors was found. High proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunoexpression found in most of the tumor cells may explain the high risk of rec

We report a rare case of primary renal adenosarcoma in a 26-year-old woman presenting with right flank pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a large, mixed solid and cystic mass confined to the renal pelvocalyceal system, closely mimicking a malignant renal tumor. Histopathologic examination revealed a biphasic tumor with phyllodiform architecture. Immunohistochemistry showed benign epithelial positivity for cytokeratin and focal malignant stromal positivity for smooth muscle actin and CD10; however, the tumor was negative for CD99, Wilm's tumor protein, SS18-SSX, BCOR, and
