Patients occasionally present with reports of ocular exposure to fluids from rattlesnakes, claiming or suspecting the substance to be venom. This study set out to evaluate and characterize reported cases of suspected venom-induced ophthalmia in humans. A retrospective review of rattlesnake exposures reported to the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center over a 24-year period was conducted for ocular exposures. Recorded information included patient demographics, clinical course, laboratory results, and treatments. Documentation regarding interactions between patients and snakes was reviewed

BACKGROUND: The 20 min whole blood clotting test (WBCT20) is a simple bedside test recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) to assess hemotoxic envenomation and guide administration of polyvalent anti-snake venom (ASV). However, reliability and validity of this test has not been well documented in literature.
METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients with history of snake bite were prospectively evaluated at a teaching hospital in India over 2 years. Envenomation was established by clinical and laboratory criteria. WBCT20 was done at 0, 4 and 12 h using standardized protocol. Prothrombin time

Although snakebites are uncommon, there are several species of medically important venomous snakes native to Singapore. We present a case of envenoming by the shore pit viper (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) that showed clinical improvement when treated with the Indian (Haffkine) polyvalent antivenom. A 40-year-old man was bitten on his right hand by a snake, which was identified through photos and his description to be a shore pit viper, which is native to the local mangrove area. Severe swelling and pain developed immediately after the bite, which progressed up the arm. Because of the progre

The majority of snake bites in Central America are caused by Bothrops asper, whose venom induce complex local effects such as myonecrosis, edema and especially hemorrhage. These effects are only partially neutralized by the clinically used antivenom, even when administered rapidly after envenomation. Recently we screened 49 substances for antihemorrhagic activity and found that a mixture composed of CaNa2, EDTA, a B. asper serum fraction (natural antidote), and the currently used horse polyvalent antiserum is highly effective in the neutralization of local and systemic hemorrhage developing af…

Visual hallucinations (VHs) are extremely rare in snakebites. We report a case of Russell's viper bite in an otherwise healthy 55-y-old woman who presented to a hospital in south India with established clinical features of systemic and local envenomation, including coagulation failure, without any neurologic manifestations on admission. She reported simple VH on the third day, which abruptly stopped on the fifth day without any specific medications. Clinical, laboratory, imaging, and electrophysiological studies did not reveal any neuropsychiatric disorders. Including this case, only 5 cases o

CASE: We report a lethal case of a mamushi (Gloydius blomhoffii) bite. An 84-year-old woman was bitten by a mamushi snake on her right elbow. She was initially treated at another hospital, however, because the swelling expanded and her renal function worsened, she was transferred to our hospital. Compartment syndrome, thrombocytopenia, respiratory arrest, and elevated creatinine kinase and lactose dehydrogenase levels were seen; renal failure progressed, and ileus and peritonitis due to colon perforation occurred.
OUTCOME: The patient died 35 days after the bite. An autopsy revealed widesprea

Seven hundred and thirty accidents by Bothrops snake bite attended at Hospital Vital Brazil-Instituto Butantan (HVB-IB) were studied: 411 of in 1983/84 (group A) and 319 in 1986 (group B). All the patients were seen in the Hospital 6 hours after the bite. As an average, all the 411 patients of the group A and the 319 patients of the group B received antivenom capable of neutralizing 215 mg and 117 mg of Bothrops jararaca, respectively. Both groups were similar concerning to: sex and age of the patients; anatomic region bitten; frequency of incision and tourniquet use at the site bite; time in

INTRODUCTION: Snakebites are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in India despite availability of anti-snake venom and the absence of a large number of highly venomous snakes. This may be attributed to treatment seeking behaviour of the population. The study aims to find out common clinical features, outcome, and delay in arrival time to the hospital in snakebite cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional retrospective record-based study among the patients presented with a history of snakebites to the Basaveshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Chitradur

Proteins of the macroglobulin family are prime targets of venom enzymes in snake bite. A massive reduction in the active concentration of these multifunctional proteins in snake bite, makes the living system vulnerable to dysregulation. This study investigates the ability of Indian polyvalent anti-snake venom (ASV), methanolic extract of Andrographis paniculata (MAP) and their combination in rescuing human alpha 2-macroglobulin (A2MG) and its homologues in rat plasma, from inactivation by Naja naja (N.N) venom enzymes. In-vitro experiments were conducted with heparinized human plasma and in-vi

BACKGROUND: Detection and quantification of snake venom in envenomed patients' blood is important for identifying the species responsible for the bite, determining administration of antivenom, confirming whether sufficient antivenom has been given, detecting recurrence of envenoming, and in forensic investigation. Currently, snake venom detection is not available in clinical practice in Sri Lanka. This study describes the development of enzyme immunoassays (EIA) to differentiate and quantify venoms of Russell's viper (Daboia russelii), saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus), common cobra (Naja naj

Using immunological techniques, cases of human snake-bite can be proven and individual snake species identified. A series of experiments is described, to test the antigenic stability and physical properties of an Elapid venom, venom properties which will have implications in field use, transport, or the laboratory procedures relating to the immunological characterization of Australian snake venoms. Using venom from the Elapid, Tropidechis carinatus, we have demonstrated significant immunological stability at a temperature of 37 degrees for 48 h at least, and for 24 h at least when incubated co

Although cobra envenomation continues to pose a threat to life and therefore constitutes a major cause of death in Africa, India, and Sri Lanka, the forensic pathology reports are not always histologically well documented or illustrated. The reports in the literature, although providing graphic evidence of the macroscopic appearances of the bite and its ensuing tissue necrosis, should the victim survive, often do not illustrate the histopathological findings to a sufficient degree. We present an unusual case of fatal envenomation by a rinkhals (Hemachatus haemachatus) in which the victim had b

Every 5 minutes, 50 people are bitten by a snake worldwide; four will be permanently disabled and one will die. Most approaches to treating and diagnosing snake envenomation, a World Health Organization (WHO)-neglected tropical disease, rely on antibody-based solutions derived from animals or cell culture. Here, we present the first proof of concept for a glycopolymer-based ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) assay to detect snake venom, specifically Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) venom. This was achieved by synthesizing a library of glycan-terminated poly(hydroxyethyl acrylamide) f

In India, the deceased kidney transplant program is still in its preliminary stage, and accepting deceased donors with snakebite is just a forward step to expand the donor pool. We report here the outcome of 8 successful renal transplantations from brain-dead donors who died from a neurotoxic snakebite. We accepted them as donors as they had no evidence of hemotoxic snakebite. 7 recipients did well. 1 died due to sepsis with a functioning graft. 1 required renal biopsy that showed acute tubular necrosis. 1 required re-exploration due to graft collection due to a surgical issue. Patient and gra

BACKGROUND: Clinical education about envenomations and their treatment may convey clinical and zoological details inadequately or flatly. In recent years, the widespread availability of models and videos of venomous species have created unique opportunities for toxinology education. We share our experiences using a new toolkit for educating a diverse array of clinicians, students, and wilderness medicine enthusiasts.
METHODS: We examined the cost, number of participants, and satisfaction data since the initiation of a portable workshop featuring high-fidelity exhibits of venomous species. Ter

The bites of six species of venomous elapid snakes in Central Province Papua New Guinea produce similar clinical syndromes. Optimal management of envenomed patients involves the use of monospecific antivenom. In this study, Venom Detection Kits (VDKs) (CSL Diagnostics, Melbourne) were used to try to make a specific diagnosis in envenomed patients at their admission. VDKs detected venom in admission bite site swabs from 39 to 46 patients (85%). Thirty-eight of these patients were shown to have been bitten by taipans. In all cases where venom was detected by the VDK, this correlated with subsequ

The Gaboon viper has acquired an impressive reputation which is at least partly unfounded. This handsome animal with such striking features is undoubtedly docile which accounts for the very low incidence of bite amongst humans. There are only six detailed clinical reports on the effect of bite and these are summarized in the review. The viper does indeed produce prodigious amounts of venom, but the toxicity, weight for weight, is rather low compared to other poisonous snakes. Venom extractions have been carried out on four snakes over a 13-year-period and the effects of this venom have been st
